WORST SHOW ON TV

About the racism, Chappelle does overdo that nerdy white guy schtick (as someone already mentioned). It wouldn't be so bad, if it were based in reality. The black stereotypes are good (ie. valid) stereotypes, because they're rooted in reality. The nerdy-white-guy-thing is not representative of a large portion of white people, thus it is not a valid stereotype. There are lots of black people who are like Tron, there are not lots of white people who are like Dave's anchorman character.

That aside, Chappelle was one funny motherfarker when he did his first HBO special. "Chappelle's Show" has had it's moments, some really classic bits. Besides Charlie Murphy's stuff (which is all great), the "Sesame Street" spoof about VD was great. Dave's second HBO special was a big disappointment (much like Chris Rock's last one). The only comedian I can think of who has consistently done great stand-up through the years is George Carlin.

Now, if you want to talk about Comedy Central farking up, they cancelled "Tough Crowd", which was such a great show. It's what got me to watch "The Daily Show" sometimes, since it's gone way down hill (in comedic value) since Kilborn left. It's so overproduced now, it's just not funny (Lewis Black is funny, of course, though).

On a "The Daily Show" note, a buddy in high school used to go to tapings regularly. He was there when Norm MacDonald was on. We were both big Norm fans at the time. He insisted that Norm (who is a bit creepy) stared at him through the whole taping. I don't know what to make of that tidbit of information.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned "The Hollow Men" yet and how much it sucks. Who doesn't want to watch British gays rehash old Kids in the Hall sketches?

Gentrified was the correct word to use. I think it also means urban renewal maybe that was the confusion.

I hope they drag Chapelle's ass back to work. He is funny as hell.

Tatsuma - I'm pretty sure you are joking about the being racist part, but if you are not, wow, I would hope that you get fired from your teacher job as soon as possible
I'm not a fan of ignore lists, but after hearing such a knee-jerk, reactionary, and ignorant statement I can see why someone might use one.

We should take a cue from our Brit friends and just let the series end after Season 2 at the apex (ala The Office). Did we really need those final two god-awfull seasons of Seinfeld?

After I heard about the 50 million deal, I wondered if he'd succumb to the pressure to make this season as good as the last. I can only imagine the hell he must be going through. But if it comes to making good stuff or bailing, I'd say bail and save your face.

There's just so much wrong with this string of words that it's difficult for me to even begin to digest it.

Colin Quinn has quite possibly the worst comedic timing ever, and that, combined with his mediocre at best material, makes him extremely painful to watch. His guests could be moderately funny at times, I'll admit, but when the host of the show is so ill equipped for the job, it's just going to suck. And it did.

And, while I loved Craig for the pompous ass he was, and doubted that Jon could take his place, after a year or two I realized that wasn't what he was trying to do, and it's amazing to me that you can't appreciate the show for what it has become. No, it's not the same, but different is not necessarily bad. In this case, it's pretty damn good.

The man is a self-parody with hardly any original jokes, let alone funny ones. Half are stolen from In Living Color sketches (Remember Damon Wayans' bum?) and the other half are based off of issues that are almost as old (Miss Cleo??).

Attention boys and girls, there was once this man by the name of ..... RICHARD PRYOR !!! Parodying racial stereotypes were not invented by Living Color in the late 80's.

But if the lead refuses to show up, nothing anybody can do about it. And don't say "call him" or "drag him in". This guy's a cash cow. They must have tried everything before shutting down production.

Chappelle SHow is the most original new comedy in years. If you can't see that you're living in a dream world.

Tough Crowd was the worst show I've ever seen, and Colin Quinn is the worst comedian I've ever seen with hsi own TV show.

Daily Show is probably the best thing on TV today.

And I hate TV

Well about three or four weeks ago I saw Chappelle shooting something a block from my apartment (I assumed it was for the show), so he was up and about and working then. I walked next to him on the street for about half a block. Thought it was cool but I didn't say anything because all I would have said was "you're show's really funny!" and that would be lame. The other thing I wanted to say was "when the fark are we going to see new episodes?" In light of recent events, maybe I should have asked.

The Daily Show was funny right after the election. It was GREAT watching Stewart at the edge of tears, day after day. A sort of microcosm of the kicked-puppy look the lefties had on their faces for weeks and weeks after that glorious November.

Now? Eh. Some of the skits are not bad, but Stewart is too hit-or-miss to be considered 'talented'.

I have no problem with Chappelle. It's a shame that white people are not allowed to make fun of blacks the way he can, but at least someone is doing it.
It's about time people stop becoming so hard-assed about racial issues, on either side of the fence. Looks like the word Neggir is starting to gain acceptance thanks to him.

The only episodes that have not been included in any syndication package (including the current deal with E!) are the prime-time special at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans (the only time the show has originated outside of New York), the Louise Lasser and Milton Berle episodes, and the infamous 1989 episode in which Andrew Dice Clay hosted.

I saw all but one of these when they first aired.

LL was about as close to mentally unbalanced on air live as it got; if they reran that show and I were her I'd sue for defamation.

According to a history of the show, Berle was a total douche in rehearsals and the show was supposedly terrible. Apparently you couldn't tell "Mr. Television" anything and during every sketch he would turn to the camera and mug.

The Mardi Gras special was great to watch the first time but embarrassing in reruns once you realize how many of the actors were drunk off their asses (i.e. all of them).

The Dice Clay show was just plain meh: the showpiece was supposed to be a 10 minute sketch where he played a doll-sized Diceman doing his shtick (via chromakey) against a street set; a live dog on the set ran off with the doll doing the stand-in and ruined the piece leaving an Ashlee Simpson-sized hole to fill and no one capable of improvising something else.

quote from "dooder0001":

"Stop making up words. Shutdown, login, logout, alot, etc. aren't words."

My friend, "aren't" is also NOT A WORD!

The english language (like all other living languages) is constantly in a state of change. When enough people start using a word, it becomes part of the english language. This also applies to phrases and sayings.

example:

When asked how they are doing, many people say "I'm doing good, Thanks!"

The "correct" way to say what they THINK they are saying is "I'm doing well, Thanks!"

I mean, I doubt they are running around doing good deeds all day - instead, they are healthy, and things are going well.

Yet that does not stop them.

90% of people I encouter say "I'm doing good". It's wrong, it's popular, soon it will change in meaning and be "right".

NITPICKING!

Err, thought police?

I do not believe that teachers are there to give their personal opinions

Teach what has to be teached, and leave whatever else you think for outside the classroom.

Whether it is religion, racism, football, women, whatever.

A class = for teaching

Thought police? Because I want a teacher to teach not to vomit his opinions instead?

and I know very much these teachers. In college, in philosophy, we had a marxist as a teacher.

Even if politics were NOT on the curriculum, he spent 6... SIX classes teaching us why capitalism is the devil

This kind of attitude has no place in class

2005-05-05 02:01:57 AM
I will admit that my post sounded like a kneejerk reaction, though, because I tend to hate racists

What I meant was 'If you talk about this in class, i hope you get fired', my bad for that.

I wouldn't want someone to be fired if they are a racist. I would want someone to be fired if they talk about their racist views in class (or why jesus is better than mohammed or why it's better to be heterosexual than gay or why the patriots are pwning the bears)

What is not on the curriculum shouldn't be taught in class, period

Tatsuma,

That's nothing. I had an ethics professor who was also a Mormon preist. It took me until the end of the course to realize it, but he tried slipping religion into just about every part of the course.

Trippy_the_8th_Dwarf:

Racism has nothing to do with the color of the skin of the person speaking it, and everything to do with the character of the person. Racism is the doctrine or belief that a person's race effects the way they act.

Assuming that only a white person can be racist is in fact a racist statement. Individuals are racists, not races themselves. If a stand-up comedian is making generalizations about a specific race, then the idea they are expressing is racist.

Is that really so hard for some people to wrap their heads around?

Remeber kids, "Moderatism", because both sized are farked in the head!

Argh, I seriously hate these people. Whether it's from the left, the right or etc.. etc..

How hard is it to teach in the most fair and objective way possible?

The worst are the ones who refuse to disclose their political and ideological allegiances... because you never know which slant they are actually using..

Everyone is slanted one way or another.. but when they hide their games and pass the information they decided to pass, it actually gets dangerous

The teacher I had was ludicrous. I mean, he was teaching philosophy in college and, I shiat you not he said:

'Castro is not a dictator for a simple reason: canadians do not like dictators yet they go there to travel and rest'

My jaw actually dropped.... good thing I had dropped his class a few weeks before but still went for the comedy show

the guy was so wrong on EVERYTHING that was factual, it was painful..

he kept on saying wrong numbers, wrong dates, wrong facts..

'the human body is made with 95% of water'

what??

err...

oh and I don't care that he was farther left than mao.. I had... entertaining discussions with him outside of classes about politics and stuff (the poor bastard wasn't even aware of what libertarians were)... but politics simply had no place in a 'history of philosophy' class..

and I can see how he was such a marxist, since the only thing that let him keep his job was the really strong teachers union

What I care about was how so many young minds who knew nothing about politics and such started to repeat the wrong informations that he was giving (and i mean the ones you can counter with facts, not political opinions)

Tatsuma: what happened, actually? too lazy to google

Well, aside from the goof up during the "Cool Mite" skit mentioned above, let's see....there were protesters in the audience disrupting his opening monologue, not long after he picked on a soon-to-be-married couple (I think) in the audience, saying "Meanwhile the guy in the back is saying 'White dress? I broke the biatch when she was 15!'" For 1990 that was probably too risque. Then there were more technical flubs during his "Ridiculous Bull" skit. The video kept jerking all over the place - plus Dice called an oven a microwave (this was a black-and-white spoof of "Raging Bull" remember), leaving John Lovitz (playing Joe Pesci's character) to say "Microwave? It's 1943!". Then there were technical diffifulties in censoring words like "Poontang" in another skit - it was used several times, but one leaked through. Makes you wonder why they bothered at all, since the script clearly called for him to use the word "Poontang" several times.

I can only assume that most of the problems stemmed from the extra time delay they were using for his appearance.

Perhaps I should make an mpg of it. Sounds rare enough that people might want to see it!

When are the rappers and stand-up wannabes going to stop playing 'black-face' for white liberals?

when oh when?

2005-05-05 02:44:28 AM
I think what makes Chapelle slightly racist, even though it is comedy,is the existence of double standards. If a white comic were to produce skits portraying black stereotypes it would never be accepted. However in todays' society, a black comic doing the opposite is part of pop-culture.

2005-05-05 02:46:37 AM
The Chappelle show is great, if not for the genius level comedy, than for the number of racist white people it pisses off for being successful.

Another show Comedy Central needs to bring back is "Gerhard Reinke's Wanderlust."
Why am I the only one that's seen this show?

There was a marathon on about a month ago that ran from 1am to 4am. I stayed up and watched all of them and missed work the next day and got fired. It was well worth it. Did anyone else see it? Especially the one where Gerhard goes to South America and gets kidnapped by a marxist rebels. Viva El P.U.B.E!!!!

Dave Chappelle and Gerhard Reinke need to be put on a deserted island and just have cameras follow them around all day. No need to write sketches. Just pure comedy gold. There's your show.

Bingo. I remember a coworker bringing in Dove ddark chocolate, and it was extremtly bitter. I said, "damn this chocolate is darker than Wesley Snipes". (yes, I shamelessly ripped that from Charlie Murphy, but I was making to attempt at making it sound original anyway) A couple of them thought I shouldn't have said that. But hell, if it's ok for it to be on Chappelle's show, why isn't it ok for me? Sorry, being white should not be an indicator.
