Woo hoo! the counter is up to 7! When did that happen?

2002-04-01 02:06:18 PM
...unless they mean they're working in the "learned how to close before the ad can load on broadband speeds" sense. I that case the ads are doing great!

2002-04-01 02:06:25 PM
Of course I got hit with a pop-up ad when I went to that story....oh, the irony.

2002-04-01 02:06:47 PM
Yeah, they work because you go to click something on the page just as they load and you end up clicking the damn ad instead and lose your place... *grumble grumble*

2002-04-01 02:06:54 PM
And didja notice all those ads that popped up?

2002-04-01 02:07:05 PM
You bet it's unlikely!!

Now, which of my seventeen "security" cameras should I watch?

2002-04-01 02:07:49 PM
So does anybody consider purchasing X10 products after seeing the barrage of ads they throw at you every day?

This research better be false, because internet advertising is the devil in digital form!

2002-04-01 02:09:26 PM
One word... "popupkiller"

2002-04-01 02:09:29 PM
I DONT NEED A CAMERA, will someone please tell X10 that.

2002-04-01 02:09:32 PM

2002-04-01 02:10:45 PM
Anybody read the article saying Porn Is Out? That is the worst research I've ever seen. I know when I search the web I always use Excite.....

2002-04-01 02:11:20 PM
Want to see ads at their worst ? Read any story on Salon.com, those ING ads are annoying to the point of driving you insane. Curse you Javascript !!!! Can the DMCA be used to stop those ads ?

2002-04-01 02:11:21 PM

One of the benefits of surfing at 33.6 speeds is that ads take FOREVER to load*. It's easy to close popup windows before a single bit of the graphic has appeared. Alas, those annoying Flash ads can be quite bandwidth-thrifty, I especially like the car ads on Salon.com where it obscures half the text for the better part of a minute :-(

* - drawbacks, a single pr0n download can take many minutes... FTP'ing an mp3 = 20 min!

"Everytime you view an X10 ad, God kills a kitten"

In other news, force-feeding diet coke at gunpoint to college students has been found to increase awareness of diet coke by those students.
Who would have thought?

2002-04-01 02:12:36 PM
Love me some pop-up killers...

2002-04-01 02:13:24 PM

2002-04-01 02:13:26 PM
It occurred to me that it might be funny to write a parody song entitled "The Devil Went Down to Ebay."

Then again, maybe not.

2002-04-01 02:14:06 PM
What about:
"Everytime you masterbate, God kills an X10 ad"?

2002-04-01 02:18:29 PM
Ok, who's with me. Let's go protest outside of X10's offices with signs, posters, pitchforks and torches.

Seriously though. I'd like to ask the kidneys of the ad-wizard who came up with those ads a few questions.

2002-04-01 02:18:55 PM
users say, "we ignore on purpose businesses that have heavily irritating ads."

2002-04-01 02:19:28 PM
And just to prove their point - a big-ass popup ad! How clever.

2002-04-01 02:20:03 PM
Eurytion, your Weeners cracked me up.

Now, I want to see the study the industry does on how well those da*n Orbitz and X10 ads increase people's blood pressure.

2002-04-01 02:21:05 PM
God! I hate pop-ups! And those new flash things that jump up in the window over the stuff I am trying to see suck even worse.

2002-04-01 02:21:28 PM
AdSubtract - the original popup killer...not that I care, thanks to fast key hitting and the ability to blank out ads at will I've no need for popup killer!

2002-04-01 02:21:30 PM

2002-04-01 02:29:32 PM
Psst. They aren't tawkin bout pop-ups.

They're talkin' about those Flash ads like yawl see on CNET. Those things is friggin' awesome, EXCEPT fahwar the ones thet 'fly' ovur thuh text. I've stopped gunna uh couple uh sites because of them.

2002-04-01 02:30:53 PM
The ones that really get me are the ones that call up other pop-ups when you close them out. They either override the standard windows controls, or they just look like the regular controls. It's like telling a telemarketer you're not interested, only to have them transfer you to another telemarketer.

2002-04-01 02:31:36 PM
Ah! Those ads that fill the screen and don't fark off until you click on them. Which means... they've generated click-thru data. What a load of arse.

2002-04-01 02:32:11 PM
Um I don't think this article refers to popups as opposed to the BFU's (Big farkin Units) that get put in the middle of stories.

And you know ads suck on the web but they suck on TV too. But considering the woes of many sites, including this one I can suck it up for the content I'm getting.

If someone can come up with a better way of making money for these sites while still providing free content please speak up otherwise you're just gonna have to deal with it.

2002-04-01 02:33:22 PM
WTF, funny farking filter, mods :)

I work at Unicast, and I must defend my company, (unbiased...) Unicast ads have several positives over other large format ads. They don't hog up your bandwidth, as they only load when your browser is idle. They also have a 10 minute timer so you will not see one more than once every 10 minutes while surfing a site. (unlike x10's on every page you go to, on top of that, they are pretty cool looking.

I hate annoying pop-ups as much as the next guy, but if the proper ad format can help sites we like to visit stay alive they are necessary. (I used to work at Deja.com, and they couldn't make any money and we all joined the dotcom deadpool)
X10 pop unders and many other formats are horribly annoying. I hate having 500 things pop up on the screen. The superstitial ad is an attempt at a format that is effective, but as inobtrusive as possible. They get a very high clickthrough rate, and they help generate a lot of revenue for sites at a time when companies are paying almost nothing for regular banner ads.
I know there will be plenty of negaive responses to my post, but some of my favorite websites have disappeared because they couldn't pay the bills. These ads can help keep them in business.
