Kinda bad when you drive atleast 100 miles a day to and from work, i don't think i've put money in my bank account for a few months now.

Who can't remember their zip code?

This is a simple anti-theft protocol to protect the consumer so quit the whining.

>>Cue Bob Segar's "Feel Like a Number"

No problem with it here.

Your zipcode is usually on your license which you shouldn't be driving without anyway.

Let me jump on the, "They've done this in California for years" bandwagon by saying that they've done this in California for years.

/it's a good idea, too
/of course, it protects the merchant and the credit card company more than the consumer, since you are already not liable, assuming you report that your credit card was stolen in a timely manner

My question about credit/debit cards is when are they going to make a card that the signature bar doesn't get completely scraped off by regular use!?

I mean, its 2005. We're cloning sheep. Someone has to be able to figure out a way to actually KEEP a signature on a card, right? One would think?

Maybe its just me.

2005-05-02 10:49:52 AM
On one hand, its a pain in the ass to type it in...but once you get your card stolen its a whole other story. They don't pull these idea's out of their ass people, there is reasoning behind it. I'm sure they have had many credit card fraudsters.

Funny you should say that. One of the main reasons I got a debit card was so that I wouldn't have to go inside the station to pay. I also got sick of having to wait in line behind some fat-ass mouth breather holding a numerology book, trying to decide what lottery tickets they wanted to buy in lieu of food for their children.

2005-05-02 10:51:42 AM
Whenever a clerk asks for my ID with a charge I say "Thank you for making sure it is ME using my card." They get a lot of griping, so I give them a bright spot in their day. I had a card go shopping without me. Scary. The company was very good about it.

/so glad I don't work with the idiot public!

anybody know why best buy asks for a phone nubmer when you buy stuff? also, who the fark wants entertainment weekly?

Oh, another thing. Has anybody else noticed that gas prices are actually coming down slowly? Very slowly, of course, but still.

Does that thing even really matter? My last three cards I tried to use at stores and after signing the receipt, the cashier looks at the back of my card and says she can't go through with the sale because there's no signature on the card.

All three times I signed it right there in front of their face and all three times told me "thank you and have a good day" as I walked out with my new stuff.

First off, if you're giving it your credit card number, then they know your zip, your address and your mother's maiden name. They know everything your credit card company knows.

2ndly, if you don't know your zip code, you shouldn't have a drivers liscense. (by the way, assuming you drove to the gas station to get gas, your zip IS on your driver's license).

Again, this is Texas, where only 1/3 of drivers have insurace, so they may not have a license....

I use 3 diffrent zips, mine, my parents and my PO box are all diffrent. Its bullshiat when you have two diffrent zips to remember when it comes to these stupid things but I would still perfer it over some asshat getting ahold of my credit card and fueling up there 30 gallon tank.

If someone steals your credit card, can we assume that it's in the wallet when it's stolen? If they steal your wallet, can't they just look at your driver's license for your zip code?

The following will never change:

People complaining about gas being too high.

People at a funeral saying that the deceased "looks natural".

People worrying about asteroids, magnetic pole shifts, supervolcanoes, cosmic rays and other things that are uncontrollable.

People complaining about bad drivers.

People who think there is some sort of secret organization that wants to know what they are buying at the grocery store/wants to enslave them/wants their firearms.

People who think that life isn't fair (it's not).

People who think that the political party they vote for is pure and the other one(s) are full of liars and crooks.

Did I miss anything?

I've had to use my zipcode whenever I use my AMEX at self checkouts for a while. Not a problem.

Oh and zipcodes have 5 digits. Those last 4 digits are really citizen relocation codes.

Ang6666, I've recently seen gas in Tennessee as low as $2.04-2.08 a gallon, regular. That was a week ago.

It's the principle of the whole thing...

If my credit card is stolen, I'm not worried about the thief buying gas, I'm worried about him taking it to Best Buy and going crazy on it...

Me too, but this may be a move to frustrate thieves. Smart crooks learned that the pay at the pump system first tries to make a $1 charge to make sure the card is good. If that goes through, the card is still valid. Add in the fact that no one checks signatures, and no one around to see the face of the card user, it's a safe way to make sure a card hasn't been cancelled.

I paid $2.62 a gallon this morning. Asshats. Welcome to the most expensive gas in Florida - Daytona Beach.

Last time I was filling up in Pinellas County, a group of protestors showed up and wouldn't let me leave. It was something about not withdrawing a feeding tube.

I said,"Hey, it's just a car. Hello! A Car!"

And all they could say was some stuff about a culture of life and how I was going to hell.

An interesting point, EatsCrayons, I can only imagine that the developers of this plan forsaw this little wrinkle and made the necessary adjustments; either alpha-numeric assignments or, if you're lucky, exempt status (they have you on video file coming across the border). Besides, Canadians are harmless. ;-)

ya...when i was in florida, i tried to get gas at this one station. i put my card in and it said "enter data"...being from ohio, i had no idea what the hell it was asking...i was going to go in and ask the cashier but there was such a long line...needless to say, i was pretty frustrated.

$2.62 expensive??? - It's over $7 in the UK!

2005-05-02 11:02:03 AM
I moved to Cali and this is one of the things I hate about it.

First, the friggin gas stations make you pay first, which is a pain because I usually like to fill up and don't know how much it will cost -- so you either have to underfill or overpay and go back in and get whatever change you want.

Second, when you move frequently and your zip changes a lot, its hard to know when the CC company has processed your change of address, and I've had pumps shut down (not just ask to re-enter the zip) when I put in an outdated zip.

Now I just try to go to Sam's club or Costo because they never ask for the ZIP (because you use their card).

Also, while I'm being pissed off, do all these friggin california environmentalists really need to be driving SUV's with 30 gallon tanks that take forever to fill and then feel compelled to complain while they are filling up about how the high gas prices are Bush's fault? Grrr.

Oh, and who was the stupid guy who decided to make Sam's club gas stations all one way, with short hoses, so all the people with tanks on the drivers side of their car have to wait in a big line while the pumps for the passenger sided cars go unused. I've taken to just going the "wrong way"... what are they gonna do, revoke my membership?

Ok, enough ranting... have a good day.

seems like a good idea to me.

honestly, who doesn't know their zip code? it's not like it's hard to remember. isn't your address on your drivers licence anyway?

and i've always wondered, most gas pumps you don't even go inside if paying with CC. and i like that, but it would be easy for someone else to use that card.

anyway. i don't mind the extra 10 seconds it would take.

Took the words out of my mouth, omega

As for this zip code thing - I don't see anything wrong with it. If you don't know your zip code, you probably aren't bright enough to be driving anyway (especially since its on your driver's license). And if you just moved, then this is a great motivation to learn your zip code right away.

Having had my gas card stolen and then quickly racked up with over $1000 of gas, beer and smokes I can understand having that security step installed into the transaction. But when I'm traveling on the corporate account it would suck. The EXXON folks were very understanding about removing the pump-and-go gas charges from my account, but were being real pains in the ass about the "inside purchases" until we compared past credit card usage and signatures. Turns out the gas station attendant was in on the scam. Still took over 2 months to get it taken care of and then another couple of months to clear up the credit reporting.
/no sympathy for those who can't remember their home zip-code......if you can't remember your zip code WTF are you doing driving?

I think it would be funny if people had to enter their ZIP code to get into their car.

That would thin the herd a bit.

I'd like to think this would cut down on drunk driving as well, but all you'd see is drunk drivers with safety glass on their front seat.

Not reading the article, because it has already started here in Ohio. I don't see how this makes us more secure at all. If someone got your credit card # due to online attacks, then they already have your zipcode for your shipping address, or whatever else info they have on you. If the common thug stole your wallet, the he has your drivers license. Assuming your zip is correct on that, wow.. Major security there.

I'm surprised it took this long for gasoline stations to figure out it's not a good idea to accept charge cards with absolutely no verification. What they're doing is using the zip code as a pseudo PIN number. That they should do is require actual PIN numbers that won't be printed on your ID if you lose your wallet.

Lies LIes LIES

Gas stations do not have to pay extra when someone uses a stolen card. The credit card companies do. There is no economic reason for gas companies to do this besides forcing people to give free marketing information. Same reason Radio Shack asks for Zip codes. You want to determine who your customers are by their zip because there is so much data based on zip. you give me your zip and I can estimate your race, income, driving habits, if you own a home or rent and about 10 zillion other things. I can also figure out who I should be doing mass market mailings to, TV advertising etc...

On the other hand, there is an advantage to this information gathering. First it allows companies not to spend too much on it which can reduce my overall price when buying their product. Second, you are going to get junk mail so it would be nicer to get stuff you actually care about. I mean why send 5,000 mailings about AARP to a zip which is mostly college kids.

So in summary, I dont mind myself but I can see alot of people getting pissed because they just want to get back in their car especially late at night or in the winter (I live in Wisconsin, nothing like standing in 20 below waiting for your gas to fill up).

2005-05-02 11:13:14 AM
stations in california have been doing this for a long time

and i think people who can't remember the zip that their card has as the billing address are farking idiots.

2005-05-02 11:13:47 AM
How is it an anti-fraud measure? Your name is printed right on your credit card; a quick whitepages search will give you the right ZIP code or a very short list. And what are the odds of somebody stealing your credit card and NOT stealing some other piece of ID that has your ZIP code printed on it? It sounds like an useless annoyance at best.
