Tito's ghost haunts Yugoslav apartment block

Reuters News Service

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia - Ghosts including that of the late communist leader Marshal Josip Broz Tito are stalking a Yugoslav apartment block built on an old military graveyard, residents complained Thursday.

Construction workers dug up the bodies of World War I Serb soldiers in 1990 to lay foundations for the army accommodation building in the southern city of Nis.

Now tenants say they are being haunted by mysterious footsteps on the roof and weird noises in the night.

"Something strange is going on here, I tell you," resident Radmila Babic told the Nacional tabloid newspaper.

"Tito's image appears on the wall of our bedroom whenever rain falls on the cemetery," another tenant said referring to a nearby cemetery. Tito's grave is in Belgrade.

But an army officer who lives there was not spooked.

"Oh come on -- you can't really believe all those ghost stories," he said. "To tell you the truth, it seems to me that our wives have been spreading these silly tales."

Tito may have been a communist dictator and all, but I have respect for him. He refused to knuckle under to threats and dictates from the Kremlin, which is what made so many communist regimes around the world repugnant.

Sure boogers have nutritional value, GettinPlay. How else do you think kids sustain themselves through those picky eating stages?

What's the difference between boogers and broccoli?
Kids will eat boogers.

Ha. Here's my contribution:

A communist dictatorship, just like any other sort of dictatorship, would work fine provided you had benevolent, moral leaders at the helm working mainly for the betterment of their people.

Unfortunately, that sort of thing doesn't seem too damned likely in *any* sort of governmental system. That said, best to stick with a system that offers a fair balance between government power and individual liberty, which would be the crappy-ass one we're presently operating under. Oh, well.

Tito? Tito Puente?

That was worth reading just for the line "Tito's image apears on the wall of our bedroom every time rain falls on the cemetary."

Marshal Tito was an altogether different beast than the puppets imposed on Poland and East Germany. Tito's partisans caused enormous problems for the Nazi's and their Croatian puppet state. The French resistance and other partisans were downright wimpy compared to the accomplishments of Tito's group.

Because of this, Tito's rule actually had some real legitimacy in Yugoslavia as an indigenous revolution as opposed to just being a foreign imposed government.

Why are there a few nerds trying to turn this goofy story about a ghost of a dead Warsaw pact leader into a political discussion about Communism? Oh, wait, this is Fark, and they got nothing better to do...

Typical Farker reaction: Communist refusal to sell rock-salt to western countries will eventually result in Suddams use of nuclear and bio weapons.

lol more or less Tonguedepressor, but if we keep flamebaiting a few trolls around here, we're basically the same. I don't know about you, but I have *better* things to be doing on my Saturday night than getting into a debate about Marxist theory with people who have no clue about Marx, other than what Dan Quayle's buddies told them.

2002-03-30 08:36:27 PM
I wouldn't be complaining if I were these people. Tito stood up to Hitler and Stalin...and won both times.

That takes balls.

So I say bring on the ghosts of old Communists! They'll do this world good!

Oh, and I'm the reincarnation of Breznev. He died the day I was born.

Have you been to a communist country Rhiannon??
I have been to two of them and I find that the people who live there are amazingly human, they don't have advertising/pamela anderson/gold diggers etc etc flashing infront of them one hundred times a day. Due to this they are very family oriented and loving artistic people in comparison to people in our society.

I'm not saying communism has no faults, I just think that there are some extremely positive aspects to it as well.

which is why the russian mail order bride business does so well. the ladies are (one suspects) far from traditional despite their claims but the customers being american men don't see this. unfortunately the end results have been posted here more than once.

btw russia, or more precisely belarus, was an interesting place to visit in 1990 when i was there.

America's brand of democracy doesn't work either unless a bunch of African, Asian, South American, and Central American countries have millions die for what America wants.

Don't ever claim America is the moral center of anything. What America did to support American interests was just as evil as anything Stalin did.

I think I should've quoted this one instead for my last reply, but it's Emeril so it would've been pretty pointless since he's practically braindead.

Anybody who thinks communism lifts the human spirit and encourages art (self-expression) should read Ayn Rand's "We The Living".

2002-03-31 12:01:27 AM
people under communism were killed or put into re-education camps for creating art that supposedly went against the "collective good", so dont tell me commmunism encourages self expression. But i forgot, im braindead and im blinded by the flag so my opinions should be discarded.

I want to know one American backed regime that has actually been good for the people of the country.

I assume one of those communist re-education programs would be Pol Pot's genocidal method. I wonder how he came to power.

Maybe it's because the U.S. carpet bombed Cambodia and destroyed their entire agriculture (along with 700,000 people). This allowed the Khmer Rouge to take over the government and create genocide and famine for the people to enjoy! The Vietnamese eventually went in and overthrew them (grrr, damn commies) and installed a leader that wasn't insane.

The U.S has NEVER done anything for the good of the people of another country without thinking of their self-interest. They couldn't justify it to the American people without it sounding like there could be a monetary gain. Helping just because it would save innocent people's lives isn't really rewarding is it?
