Does every link from Mainichi get greenlit? I think we've got a Japanophile for an admin.

Inauguration gift for Pope Benedictine?

Gotta love buddhists. Not stuffy about such things.

altar cum booze cabinet.

If the altar cum booze cabinet's name is Jessica, I think I dated her in college.

I hope the guinness isn't traced back to wil

Didn't they all drink from Buddhas at the end of Charlie's Angels?

2005-04-26 05:55:09 PM
Then they used the booze to mix up a batch of "Dalai Lama Slammas"

The Lama loves a good shooter.

Yo bartender! Jobu needs a re-fill!

Foreigners fill sacred Buddhist altars with booze

Well, when you're a long, long way from home and feeling cold as ice, why not. Some good ol' altar booze will leave you hot blooded, with double vision.

Cake Hunter, I think you are reading the sentence wrong.

(Had to kill two jokes with the obvious slant. Couldn't help it.)

"If you want me to consume this booze in your stead give me absolutely no sign."

*nothing*

"Thy will be done. Glug, glug, glug."

i could make a workable bar out of that. of course, all that worthless crap on the table would have to go to make room for bottles, but i can see it

Foreigner belt was the first thing I thought of.

I actually prefer a tiki motif for my at home bar. Complete with coconut and pinaple shaped cups and tiki masks with glowing eyes.

Butsudan:

Butsudan range from about a foot tall to giant wardrobe sized. And of course the people selling them are happy because people just aren't buying these things any more. I guess if you're a devout Buddhist this is kind of like having a painting of Jesus in you den.

djemonk: I think you're right. Unfortunately, the only news they greenlight anymore is the "what's the fark wrong with Japan" variety.

"Fifteen and I won't tell the Drazi you've been poking holes in their deities."

/First thing that came to mind looking at the headline.

Well, I guess it isn't too obvious if you don't know anything about Buddhism. Alcohol or drug consumption goes against one of the five precepts. Even though the buddhists aren't drinking, I can still see how it might be offensive. Then again, if they're good Buddhists, they'll realize that the foreigners didn't have bad intentions (I assume they were just ignorant to the Buddhist principles), and the foreigners didn't hurt themselves or others.

buddha altar filled with booze

we need a pic from that recent Simpsons episode where they went to China, and they spray painted Homer gold and made him act like a buddha statue

2005-04-27 04:09:19 AM
Public Butsudan and Shinto shrines in Japan almost always have sake, and often beer, in front of them as offerings. And that's got nothing to do with foreigners.

2005-04-27 04:11:43 AM
Damn buddhist tenants!

2005-04-27 07:27:20 AM
I guess they never got over Macho Grande. Or Achi Baba either....

As if anyone in Japan is Buddhist anyway.. 95% of my friends don't even know what Buddhism is even about.

How more sensationalist can you get? The guy they interviewed only said "I heard that one time someone bought one to use a liquor cabinet. It wasn't at my store though."
The way the author puts it, its like "IGNORANT FOREIGN DEVILS COMMIT SACRILEGE ON HOLY ALTARS USING BOOZE"! Its this kind of drivel that only increasing foreign tension and discrimination in Japan.

/Manichi Daily News: fair and balanced

Plenty of my friends' parents have butudan in the house.

If you have grandparents living there or did live there and then that generation of relatives has died, it's not too uncommon to have a butudan then with the pictures and what.

2005-04-27 12:59:33 PM
And in fact as a kid we had one but it went to another relative later, an apartment was too small.

Do these articles even run in the regular edition? I don't see them when I go to the regular page, but I will admit mostly I read the other papers.

2005-04-27 01:53:56 PM
Clearly, they mistakenly thought it was an alter to that other laid back guy, Boozda.

2005-04-27 02:02:29 PM
Sorry, bad spelling. Should have been altar not alter....
