Lame ass lame.

2005-04-23 11:50:37 PM
Yep. It pretty much sucks. I had a TFD earlier about the CTV program unveiling it (also very lame) in which I expressed some outrage.

I think it would be so much better if it was less cartoon-y. But I also wonder how the Inuit feel about the Olympics' large-scale ripping off of their culture. Vancouver is thousands of kilometres away from Iqualuit.

I wish we'd had something involving gates and mountains... something that actually represented the region. Gates are welcoming too: they're an entrance. We could have made it easily represent the rest of Canada. Maybe a set of 5 gates, they could have been the "regions" or whatever that they want to represent, and the rings.

I am not happy at all. What kind of crack are the planners of this smoking? How are people supposed to take the Games seriously with this crappy-ass logo?

2005-04-24 12:00:04 AM
Wow..What a huge letdown on this logo!!
Ugly pile of dog droppings would have been better then this disgrace.

It looks like the logo for a day care center

Is there a futures market for soap stone? I need some 2010 options.

Couldn't agree with the comments here more. I've lived in BC all my life and this is ridiculous. If they needed First Nations art in order to remain politically correct, there are hundreds of brilliant Haida artists right here on the coast, and many other artists in the interior bands. It's a really stupid symbol for the Vancouver Olympics. It says nothing at all about Vancouver.
2005-04-24 05:00:11 AM
Please allow me to be the dissenting voice who says, "I like it and I don't care who knows it."

Y'all oughtta lighten up.
If you look at some of the recent Olympic logos, this one is a lot better than most of them, and you're never going to make everyone happy.

What would you have preferred?
Happy the Heroin Needle?
Soaky the Giant Rain Drop?
Shakes the Coffee Cup?

If I go to a beach anywhere in Canada that has rocks on it, I know I'm always going to see that symbol.
To me it says, I don't know you, but I've taken the time to say "Hi" anyway.
It's a good Canadian symbol.
After all, these are Canada's Olympics, not just Vancouver's.

Finally, to everyone who's complaining, feel free to post the far superior logo that you designed.
Otherwise... well, you know what to do.
2005-04-24 05:09:03 AM
Here's a page that has every Olympic logo from past Games.
Vancouver's isn't anywhere near as crappy as some of the others.

And remember, no matter what abomination they choose for their Olympic mascot, it'll never top Atlanta's "Whatzit" from '96.

Springy, the Springfield Spring!

I liked Pattie and Selma's cigarette man discus thrower, though.

Definitely time for another Photoshop contest. The last one (with those creepy marshmallow-headed things) was great.

Oh, and forgive my Liteness if there's already a PS contest lined up for this guy.

I like it.
2005-04-24 06:06:02 AM
FYI, here's what a real one looks like.

[image from too old to be available]

I think they're farking cool.
And the logo managed to get it done in five pieces to represent the five Olympic rings and colours, all the while welcoming the world to Canada.
And it'll sell a shiatload of merchandise.

I see no problems here.

I think its cute! In a cartoony kind of way. I just hope they don't animate it because it would look scary and creepy if they did.
Not canadian so I shouldn't care, but I really get into the Olympics.

wippit: beginning to?

Springy anyone?
2005-04-24 08:18:17 AM
Nah. I could take him.
2005-04-24 08:47:39 AM
I like it.

I bet more than half the entries were some variation on a Haida mask/raven/eagle/whale (and 99% of those probably weren't designed by a Haida person).

Incidentally, in another article several Inuit said they liked it and were pleased that a symbol of the North was representing the nation to the world.

The logo is supposed to represent the host nation, not the host city.

And you cast city-centric accusations at sens.
2005-04-24 08:50:15 AM
Fire President Bush, not THAT obscure.
2005-04-24 08:52:28 AM
And inuksiuk aren't an art form, per se, so it's not like someone's art is being ripped off. They're the helpful and comforting signposts of the north, indicating that there are human beings around (and sometimes used to trick caribou), but they're not in themselves any more totemic than the inuksiuk that people make at a rocky beach to say "someone was here".
2005-04-24 09:39:45 AM
farking ugly. I can't believe they picked that one out of over 10,000 entries

2005-04-24 09:41:06 AM
Deep Hurting: I liked Pattie and Selma's cigarette man discus thrower, though.

That just makes the traditional Icelandic "Varda" seem like a meaningless pile of rocks. Of course, if my ancestors tried to make their "Vardas" look anything like those stickmen they would have lasted about fifteen minutes. It's windy.

[image from too old to be available]

Behold the lameness of my ancestors!

/yes, most of the country looks like that, and no, it doesn't really support life in the traditional sense

Damnit, Discordian36! Get out of my head!
2005-04-24 10:17:18 AM
wippit: That that nickel is worth.

More like double that amount lately.

The way the inukshuk works (or is it inuksiuk as I never got a clear answer on how it is spelled) is the arms are supposed to point in the direction of the next village. Put enough of them spaced apart and you essentially have road signs.

It appears that with the opening up of the north especially because of it's diamond mines there has been more awareness of the northern culture occuring.

I visited Yellowknife in Nov 2003 and truly enjoyed myself and would love to go back again as a tourist rather than for work. But not in February where the temperature is sitting between -40 to -50 C
2005-04-24 10:20:37 AM
Well, I was kind of hoping that BCTV had got it wrong (yeah, so much for that well kept secret, they got it almost bang on), because I didn't think the rendering they had was particularly good. It's not especially representative of Vancouver/Whistler (although there are lots of guys on the beach that make them here), sport or winter. However, if the IOC looks for it to represent the nation rather than the region that hosts... meh, OK.

2005-04-24 10:32:25 AM
Fire President Bush:

Not to criticize, but I do believe it's: "Now the people will know we were here"

in addition to that....
"Both of you know I cannot read a word"
"Sometimes we even had to drink know"
"you're here ain't ya?"
"hey-I can pay"
"if the medium is the message...then the the character"

/too much time on my hands
2005-04-24 10:35:43 AM
rikkards, inuksiuk is plural.
One inukshuk
A bunch of inuksiuk.
2005-04-24 10:37:11 AM
Just thought I would pipe up to say that I am born and raised Vancouverite. I think the logo is alright. I'm still kind of divided on whether or not I will be in town for the games.

I have to take a bus that goes almost the whole length of Hastings Street to get to work. I really don't want the whole world to see that.

Somebody pass me a doob, I need to forget the image of crack dealers directly across the street from the cop shop.
2005-04-24 10:38:25 AM
