I am disappointed. There was no muff in that article at all.

2005-04-23 01:30:00 AM
Not even a face shot. Tsk tsk.

/Canadian
/doesn't know the words to the US anthem either

This reminds me of that really cool NBA coach who came out and helped out a young girl who was singing the national anthem and forgot the words. I can't remember his name, but I thought it was one of the best things a person could do.

Maybe she fell on purpose, for added comedy effect. I like it.

2005-04-23 06:57:41 AM
After lying motionless on the ice for a few seconds, she left on her own and television replays showed a despondent Marcil being consoled in the hallway

Nice. Like what she just went thru wasn't bad enough, let's replay more embarrassing moments.

You've got to feel sorry for the poor girl.

"You've got to feel sorry for the poor girl."

I'd feel sorry for her if she got mugged in the parking lot afterwards or something. She just farked up... sucks, but we all have jobs.

2005-04-23 07:22:19 AM
Sadly, fourty years from now she will still be waking up in a sweaty screaming terror after re-dreaming this. I do NOT envy her.

/but I am chuckling. Poor thing.

I remember that. If I remember correctly, that was Maurice Cheeks, who coaches the Portland TrailBlazers.

nygirl:

I'm surprised they didn't replay the fall, then reverse it in 2x speed, then play it at 2x speed, then reverse it, then play it, then reverse it, then play it one last time in super slow-mo, with the woman's voice amplified and lowered to a deep, bassy "OOOOOHHHHH NNNNNOOOOOOO..." for dramatic effect.

'Cause that's what I would've done. Damn good thing I'm not behind the switchboard.

2005-04-23 07:25:49 AM
I would suspect a majority of the US doesn't know the words either. They should have pulled out Celine for the job, she'd have nailed it.

2005-04-23 07:27:17 AM
I find this very strange.

Due to the fact that I've been bombarded with American Television and Radio programming since infancy, I know the American anthem pretty much word for word.

Don't ask me to sing the Canadian anthem though, I might get three bars into it.

Does that make me a horrible Canadian? Or a media puppet?

2005-04-23 07:27:33 AM
what is this "hockey"

2005-04-23 07:30:34 AM
lotonah: No, probably just young. When I was a kid we had to sing the anthem each morning in school, while it played over the loudspeaker. And then the Lord's Prayer. I'm guessing this doesn't happen anymore.

If political correctness keeps on the way it has, you are more right than you know. I know the words because it was forcibly drilled into my mind. And I am glad it was. If only to effectively counter the future idiocy that we now endure. Sadly, our modern teachers are hamstrung with liberal moronicism, so I continue to weep for the future.

bakatare: I'd love to give praise to your comment, but I'm afraid if I say anything about patriotism I'll be called a stuck up Canadian flag waving ass by the people who sport "Support Our Troops" on their Hummers.

Just kidding of course. I really don't give a fark what those people call me.

I totally read that headline as "would be muff diver"...

/what's wrong with my brain?

So now she'll go cry and earn her 70 cents on the dollar.

You've got to feel sorry for the poor girl.

From TFA:
Marcil, the daughter of Rene Marcil, the past president of Hockey Quebec, was to perform.

Hmmm... I wonder if Daddy pulled some strings to get her the gig? If so, then I see no reason to feel sorry for her.

2005-04-23 08:04:20 AM
CaptainBeefheart: I'm guessing he meant exchange rate, even though the girl obviously wasn't paid and the exchange isn't 70 cents on the US dollar. Yeah, I'm not sure what he meant either, must be a private joke.

2005-04-23 08:12:28 AM
I saw clips of this on my local news last night... she looked very nervous after the first snafu. The crowd chuckled and then she tried again, and forgot the words again. Then when she came out again and fell.. the newscasters nearly lost it (and I DID lose it)

There's got to be video of this floating around somewhere. This is one for the ages.

2005-04-23 08:04:20 AM rhiannon

I know he was talking about the exchange rate, I think he's a typical USA cheerleader with a chip on his shoulder. I wonder if he's ever been to Canada. I'm from Detroit so I have been there many times and I have to say it's much nicer than the US regardless of the exchange rate.

2005-04-23 08:20:07 AM
Why didn't she practice? Or write down the words? If you had to sing in front of thousands, wouldn't you at least memorize the frickin words?

2005-04-23 08:23:03 AM
No matter what else happens in this girls life at least she will always have something worse to compare it to.

Also, "would be diva" cracked me up.

I'm not really sure how knowledge of the words of the national anthem helps one to do anything except perform at sporting events. How many times has it advanced your career or made you a more productive citizen? So kids don't know the words. What hindrance is this really causing? Failure to vote Republican?

/bleeding-heart liberal
//knows all the words
///knows all the words to "O, Canada," too!

What the hell are you talking about? In some fantasy united states of america where all dem evil liberals are out to get you, do they enforce a "no learning the national anthem" rule?

Seriously, some of you people are so paranoid I wonder how you can stand living in a free society. Maybe thats why you guys keep trying to turn it into a facist state...

Keep up the good work there Benito, I suppose atleast 1/2 the country is looking forward to The Patriot Act Part 4: Full Body Cavity Search Frenzy. I'm not sure if Al Gonzales can live up to the inestimable John Ashcrofts panache and style portraying the "Ultimate Sodomizer of American Civil Liberties", but I'm sure he'll do his best.

Additional comments that I omitted:

1. I think that a massive left-wing conspiracy to end the instruction of the national anthem exists only in your head. Kids still learn it in school. They simply forget the words...just like the adults do. So I think that you've created for yourself an imaginary situation that allows you to spew venom at the left, but that situation does not reflect actual reality...

...unless you have some evidence that it does, but as with all requests that the right produce evidence, I'm not holding my breath.

2. "Moronicism" is not a word. You likely meant "moronism."

Todays kids don't know the words to "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'"

It's a vast left wing conspiracy. I weep for the future.

/another liberal who knows the words to "The Star Spangled Banner
//also knows the Bill of Rights and understands it
///People who "weep for the future" are ineffectual crybabies. People who "do something about it", not so much
////yeah, I'm talking to you
/////plus, wasn't the muff diving would be diva Canadian anyway? I wouldn't EXPECT a foreigner to remember the words. The SSB kinda sucks anyhow. Better "This Land is Your Land"

"This Land is Your Land"

Great, now I've got that in my head for the rest of the day.

I am what any self-loathing neocon would call a "liberal", even though I seem to be somewhere between libretarian and atheist/radical -- yet I not only know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, I can sing it! With pride, because I take pride in the best that America has to offer -- the sentiments at the base of the Statue of Liberty, the soldiers finding and freeing the concentration camp victims after WWII, that girl who went over to Iraq to help the poor and helpless and got herself blown up.

She was a and she embodies what makes America great... what makes people great.

(Plus, the "Star Spangled Banner" has the good taste not to bring up Jehovah.)

Good post Clavis. And like you said, God bless France.

Ahhh, but it's not the first and would probably not be last rendition of the "Star-Mangled Banner"
