The Mr. Fixit in me loves the idea. Then I think of the poor, poor ravers without duct tape to cover up their naughty bits.

Okay, so this isn't such a bad idea.

2005-04-22 10:45:46 PM
That's not going to cover up the tears in my furniture very well.

2005-04-22 10:48:04 PM
I rather dislike this stuff, when it first came out last year I made a wallet with it. It deteriorates and gets all sticky and gooey in about a week. My last duct tape before it lasted about 4 years, and the one I made after the clear stuff got to sticky to use is barely broken in.

2005-04-22 10:55:22 PM
Thoguh: I rather dislike this stuff

Does it still remove all of the hair when you wrap it around your thighs?

Where is the related story about the HS kids that make their prom outfits out of this and get arrested for indecent exposure?

2005-04-22 10:58:45 PM
I'll second about the adhesive breakdown on this particular style.

3M usually has a better product, and I think they rushed this one. We started carrying it at my Home Depot I worked at around July of 03 I think. Any applications we tested around then had completely fallen apart by August, and anything in sunlight within days.

Just not their best stuff.

2005-04-22 10:59:45 PM
But does Red Green endorse it?

2005-04-22 11:03:20 PM
MUST HAVE IT MUST HAVE!

2005-04-22 11:09:15 PM
Will it keep my twigs and berries safely tucked away though? That's the real question.

What? I'm a gardner! Shut up!

it's almost as good as Clear Gravy

2005-04-22 11:11:55 PM
Is't clear duct tape, box tape?

2005-04-22 11:14:16 PM
Thank you. Thank you very much.

2005-04-22 11:14:46 PM
But will it hold the Space Shuttle together better than the old stuff did?

2005-04-22 11:15:22 PM
Seriously though.

Box Tape.

2005-04-22 11:17:03 PM
i used this a year ago to fix my headlamp on my old car.. its ok but its no duct tape

2005-04-22 11:20:14 PM
It would sure make those duct tape prom dresses more interesting...

Special Patrol Group
Yeah. Isn't real duct tape supposed to have fabric in it?
I mean unless you buy that crappy Frost King tape at the supermarket, that is all plastic, and worthless.

Real HVAC people don't use duct tape on ducts, it dries out. They use foil tape. This stuff just seems like thicker scotch tape.

2005-04-22 11:24:41 PM
And, just like that, ducTape's comments disappear from every thread he ever posted in.

2005-04-23 12:25:22 AM
yes folks, true irony.

q) What is duct tape not good for?
a) Duct work.

This stuff *does* have the threads in it, it is just not quite as grippy as the regular variety.

I like that three year old stuff you find in the bottom of a tool box that will remove nickle plating if you try to peel it off.

Maybe thats my old gaffers tape. That would explain it.

2005-04-23 01:21:57 AM
Screw duct tape, gaffers tape is far superior

2005-04-23 01:30:00 AM
All hail gaff tape! Sticks better, leaves less gum, easier to work with, non conductive, comes in various widths and colors and you can even paint it.

Pros who use tape (mainly film, TV, and stage), wouldn't be caught dead using anything but.

Pros use road cases and gaff tape.
Gringos use milk crates and duct tape.

Yes, Red Green does endorse it. I've seen the ads!

I haven't tried this stuff, but I always thought one of the reasons duct tape was cool was 'cuz it's all gray and gives stuff that "old and fixed" look.

If duct tape doesn't fix it, use super glue.
If super glue doesn't fix it, use duct tape.

Would be nice if girls started wearing prom dresses made from this tape....

2005-04-23 06:01:52 AM
Pros who use tape (mainly film, TV, and stage), wouldn't be caught dead using anything but.

After three years as a photo assistant shooting cars in big time stages I gotta say if you can't do it with gaff tape it can't be done.

2005-04-23 06:05:33 AM
It's clear, yippe, but it's not duct tape. And it's not new (as stated earlier). But it is better than packing tape for a lot of stuff

2005-04-23 06:08:31 AM
How do you remove it if you can't see it?

2005-04-23 06:14:10 AM
Cool now you can see your victims mouths.

2005-04-23 06:21:50 AM
Pros who use tape (mainly film, TV, and stage), wouldn't be caught dead using anything but.

That's why they call it Gaffer's tape in the first place!

2005-04-23 06:27:53 AM
This is going to be great. Now I'm off to win the lottery so I can buy 1.5 metric assloads of this stuff, and I'm going to build a giant castle out of it. Just try and stop me!

2005-04-23 06:32:47 AM
Another vote for gaff tape, just because it's amazing.

But does Red Green endorse it?

He's been on commercials for a few weeks now endorsing it, I liked the show better before 3M sponsored it, it seems too corporate now days

2005-04-23 06:35:32 AM
Just bought a house. While cleaning I realized that the previous occupants had put scotch tape all over the bedroom walls. Now it has sticky film everywhere that is near impossible to get off. Bastards.

2005-04-23 06:38:20 AM
Duct tape fixes almost anything. That's awesome.

CLEAR duct tape fixes almost anything and makes it look pretty.

This is the adhesive version of girlie movies. Problem is, your girlfriend won't care either, since she actually liked MacGuyver using ugly silver duct tape.

Sum of equation equals zero. Greenlighting of article in question.

...fark's recent hardware problems resolved thanks to a grant from the 3M corporation

2005-04-23 06:54:04 AM
bakatare: Can you represent that all in a mathematical format? I have a sneaking suspicion that duct tape harnesses the power of immortality, but it appears that THE MAN has now made it transparent. Only you have the power to unravel this mystery. Godspeed to you, sir!

/excuse my retardication, 4/20 lasts several days in these parts.

Rednecks everwhere rejoice!

2005-04-23 07:02:40 AM

the reason why HVAC folks dont use duct tape is because its really Duck Tape, but that is a trademark, so everyone else calls it Duct Tape. it has very little to do with ducts.

There goes the "Why is the Force like duct tape?" joke...

2005-04-23 07:25:49 AM
This has been on the market for about a year now, and in select areas, about 2 years.

I work at a factory where this stuff has packaged. I have packaged a lot of this transparent duct tape.

When the tape first came out, it was much stickier, however it also created a problem with the adhesive oozing out the side of the roll, so they had to fix it.

Personally, it's not all that good, and the gray stuff is much better. But, hey, the transparent stuff keeps me in a job.

And speaking of jobs, I'm off to that horid place.

My wife rear-ended the local fire chief's wife the other day. Put a nice hole in her front bumper which is now neatly covered by this stuff. Still looks like shiat, though...

2005-04-23 07:40:57 AM
I'm sorry, EB GREEN is the coolest duct tape ever.

Hose!! Thats going to amuse me all day now!

2005-04-23 08:13:32 AM
the clear duct tape sucks... I used some to tape a piece of corrugated cardboard onto a desk... because it's clear it looks better than using grey or black I thought.

It's been about a month... the edges of the tape on the cardboard piece are pulling away from it and it's got a nasty, dirty look to it because of the sticky stuff picking up dirt.

Meanwhile... I have an office chair made in the 70's that has some black vinylish type material covered foam pieces on the armrests. One of those pieces tore open a long time ago and I've been using duct tape on it. The green (only roll I had available) duct tape lasted for about 5 years and I had replace it with black (actually matches the chair) duct tape about 2 years ago because the old tape was totally coming off - but it wasn't a sticky mess at least.

Moral: Don't use clear duct tape on anything that gets touched frequently ever again. I'm sure I'll have a sticky mess when I remove the clear duct tape so I'm putting it off...

What's a road case?

2005-04-23 08:49:51 AM
We call them apple boxes where i work, though gaffers tape does kick ass and can fix ANYTHING, even 1983 Ford pickup trucks.........

2005-04-23 08:54:01 AM
What next, transparent aluminum?

2005-04-23 09:04:00 AM
Shadow Blasko,

the 3 year old stuff could be duct tape. I swear the product isn't as good as it used to be. and... thanks for the laugh, I've seen it lift chrome plating

actually now that I think of it. duct tape sorta has to age a bit before full strength. If I remember my corrosion control courses correctly, this adhesive action is an organic compound that actually wants to eat into what it touches in order to adhere to it. and I have *no* idea why I put this much thought into it.

I use packing tape to make my wallet. It's clear and slick and has no problematic strings to deal with.
