keylock71: Though I've heard fat people are harder to kidnap...

Bahahaha. I just spit all over the monitor.

And I'm sure it's okay to be a little overweight, but once a person passes a certain point, it's most definitely hazardous to one's health.

Great, so does this mean that young women will now stop starving themselves in an unsuccessful attempt to look like fashion magazines and Hollywood tell them they have to look?

Nah. Won't happen.

I am curios about this stat. I am thinking that mildly overweight people never do anything that involves any risk (skiing, mountain biking, mountain climbing, elevated heartbeats from exercise, etc.). So, I am guessing that non-fat people have a higher death rate that mildly-fat people because they take more risks in life. And that is fine with me. I would rather die young doing something adventurous than living old and dying of a heart attack because all I did in life was sit on my ass.

2005-04-21 01:09:00 AM
I think this BMI thing is bullshiat. To be under 25 BMI I would have to weigh less than 160 lbs at 5'10". I'd be a STICK at that weight

2005-04-21 01:11:53 AM
The study an analysis of mortality rates and body-mass index found that obesity and extreme obesity causes some 112,000 deaths in the US every year but that being overweight prevents around 86,000 deaths.

How are these deaths being prevented?

"Good thing you're a little chubby, mister, otherwise you'd have been crushed in that car accident. But if you had been obese you would have sufficated on your own fat."

Time to butter up your bacon and bacon up your sausage and sausage up your.... crisco?

2005-04-21 01:17:24 AM
She said Americans classified as overweight were eating better, exercising more and managing their blood pressure better than they used to.

This is ridiculous. The article basically says "overweight people have a lower mortality rate because they are trying to stop being overweight." It has nothing to do with being overweight at all, just that being overweight has made them more health-conscious.

I call BS on this entire "study." Some idiots will do anything for a grant. Or whatever monetary compensation these people are likely receiving for this "breakthrough" find. Asshats.

2005-04-21 01:18:52 AM
I also realize that KevinOfOz basically said the same thing I did. I was, however, pointing out that the article agreed with him and thus sort of defeated itself in the process.

I'm 6'1" and I was 160 at one point. I wasn't a stick at all. Definitely skinny, but nowhere near a stick.

Unless you have like 4% body fat but I doubt that.

2005-04-21 01:25:48 AM
5'9" and 145. Not a stick. I was a stick at 111 though.

But saying it's OK to be fat? C'mon.

Where do they find these quacks?

2005-04-21 01:27:28 AM
MadSkillz:

Im 5'10" and when Im in really good shape I weigh only 140 lbs, usually hang around 150 though. Then again, I am pretty stickish.

The BMI IS bullshiat.

It makes people with more-than-average muscle appear to be fat and overweight... on paper.

This is because BMI does not account for extra muscle weight.

Feel better? No? Good. =P

I must point out, I just noticed that KevinOfOz made the exact point I was trying to make, only far, far more eloquently. (And less offensively). I salute you, sir. God bless Fark.

being overweight prevents around 86,000 deaths.

All of which were prevented from falling down wells by sheer girth.
