What a pompous ass.

Heh. A friend of mine who lives 2 stories above ground does not get reception in his apartment. Yet, if he goes down deep into the trenches of Landmark Lanes (a basement bar in Milwaukee) he gets perfect reception.

Bareit: What a pompous ass.

I will totally agree with this. I can get coverage in the Bart tunnel under the Bay but not in my house? That's just asinine reasoning on this guy's part.

The largest network + Not giving a shiat about what consumers want = Verizon

Yeah, ditto here. I can't get shiyat in my house, but I was playing at a LAN party at a pal's basement in his house and it comes in fine...thanks Verizon.

WTF??? Someone give this asshat a clue!

I expect my phone to work in my house because it's my only phone.

Verizon, however, provides landline phones around here. It's not in their interest to supply service that works in people's homes. T-Mobile, being just a mobile company, wants my phone to work in my house, so I will use theirs, instead of Verizon.

It's kind of logical, if you think of it that way, though I'd quickly leave Verizon [they're SO expensive compared to T-Mobile or Cingular], especially after figuring out their "game."

2005-04-19 12:25:36 PM
Ha,

Verizon wireless is my only phone.

This moran should be taking over teh world. Verizon has the best network, IMO.

2005-04-19 12:27:50 PM
Sure, you can have reception in every sq centimeter on the planet. Just don't complain when your cell bill sky rockets cuz the cell companies have to place a tower on every block and place antennas in several locations of every building. People might want to study up on radio transmissions before being so damn critical about their cell service.

serpent_sky: I expect my phone to work in my house because it's my only phone.

Ditto. I can think of only one close friend that has a landline anymore. The only other people I know with landlines are those with businesses at home, my grandparents, and people who need them for DSL.
If I was a Verizon subscriber (thankfully, I'm not) I'd be looking at other company's plans right now. This CEO is an asshat who needs a few more lessons in business, in my opinion.

Okay. Done. Now, I still want better reception.

I'm really glad I didn't go Verizon. Whew!

And I want eleventy billion dollars. I'll tell you what, give me eleventy billion dollars and I'll make sure you have all the reception you want.

I've never had a single 'dead' zone in the years I've had Verizon, whether at home, work, or inbetween.

Downtown Milwaukee, the only carrier I can get decent Cell, and Broadband wireless reception with. :)

My reception in Scandanavia was great, everywhere. Why the hell can't they do it here?

Well its a good thing that was the Verizon CEO, not the Verizon Wireless CEO.

Verizon (data, voice) sucks major donkey balls. Customer service is terrible, their technicians are asshats, example: had a circuit issue at one of my sites, I told the guy to call me when he got there, he says ok. Few hours later, hes a no show so I call him "oh yeah, i went to the site, they didnt let me in so I left." Me: "well, did you call me?" Him: "umm, yeah you didnt pick up." Me: "Why didnt you leave a message?" him: "you have no voicemail"

Obvious lie, and I spoke to security, no one from Verizon was there all farkin day. They pull shiat like this on a regular basis. As for their support, you have to call 15 numbers just to get the right tech's, and it doesnt help that those numbers change every few months.

Verizon Wireless (cellular) is amazing. I get a nice discount through work, its my only phone. I've dealt with customer service only 1 or 2 times (my phone works great, all the time) and it's been a pleasant experience when having to deal with them.

I like my service. All data/voice service providers suck, onecanshort. There's never anything wrong with their service. It's always after the demarc. Then you replace your premise equipment, and they finally concede. Verizon is doing a massive infrastructure upgrade. Fiber to the premesis is on it's way.

Sweet!

HenryFnord:
That's a great point. Even little things like copper tubing around/in a building structure can block EM transmission. I met a guy last year developing PCS relays for buildings that act as Faraday cages; aimed mostly at large office buildings that have a lot of mobile phone users.
Then again, build a cage around your building and your employees can't use their phones indoors.

This is true, it's always CPE issues! Verizon though is worse than the others, our primary providers are Verizon and MCI, MCI is just so much easier to deal with also escalation is far simpler, I have one guy who I can get 24/7 and is always friendly even at 3 am on a Sunday. FOIS is Verizon's new thing, I cannot wait, up to 15 MBPS downstream and 10 upstream. That is going to kick so much ass. Savvy investors: don't miss out on this one, fiber optic companies are going to go through the roof in the near future.

2005-04-19 01:37:47 PM
onecanshort: Verizon and MCI,

Now you're double pwn3d. They are one in the same now. FTTP is pretty exciting.

2005-04-19 01:55:30 PM
Couldn't the company correct customer expectations by distributing statistics on how often Verizon's service works indoors or by providing more detailed coverage maps that show all possible dead zones?

Seidenberg said it wasn't Verizon's responsibility,

Verizon's responsibility is to it's shareholders and no one else...if you don't like it go somewhere else to play...and if we all went somewehere else Verizon might rethink their responsibilities...just thinkin'...

"Why in the world would you think your (cell) phone would work in your house?" he asked. "The customer has come to expect so much. They want it to work in the elevator, they want it to work in the basement."

He forgot movie theatres :p

The reason people expect it is because when you log onto their web site and look at their "coverage zone", there's a giant blanket over my city that extends for a hundred miles at least. No where does it say "except indoors". Now, I would not complain if the phone didn't work in an elevator or in the subway, but in my house? Yeah, I need it to work there. If you think it may not, please be up front about that fact when you sell me the phone. What, that might hurt sales? Ah HA! So you promise more than you can deliver and customers are becoming unreasonable? Yes, I can hear you now.

This surprises me coming from Verizon who got top marks with Consumer Reports for cell phones.

My plan with Verizon runs out in July, and I'm definitely switching. I have to charge my phone every night, otherwise the battery will run out. I also hate their stupid GetItNow plan. I'm probably going to switch to either T-Mobile or Cingular.

I just don't know what phone I should get. I want something with decent battery life (i.e. if I forget to charge it one night, I won't run out of batteries), SMS messaging or even better, AOL capability, cheap or free internet to check sports scores, and at least some fun free games. Also, the ability to check and send e-mail would be cool, but not necessary. Any suggestions?

Quick1

Stay as far as you can from Cingular. They were a nightmare.

The following is an account of my time with them that I feel best sums up the overall experience:

I lost the antenna on my phone. No biggie right? So I go down to my local Cingular store.

Me: "Hi, I lost the antenna for my phone, a Motorola T somethin or other"
Rep: "Okay, let me see. {Long Pause} Hmm, we don't make this phone anymore so we dont carry parts for it. I may have an old one in the back though. Let me check"
Me: "Really? I just got it a few months ago and it was brand spanking new. Please check though"
Rep: "sorry, don't have any in the back. Why dont you just get a new phone?"
Me: "Well, there are other stores that carry cell phones, I'm sure I can find one with the part I need."
Rep: "Not likely. Listen, that phone, its out of date, you need a new one."
Me: "Umm, out of date? Its like 3 months old and works perfectly fine, I just cannot get the full 5 bars on it b/c of the antenna"
Rep: "See, you should just get a new one, that phone sucks"
Me: "What? Listen, if your brand new car got a flat and the first place you checked didnt carry the tire you needed, would you just but a new car off that guy?'
Rep: "Umm, no I dont think so."
Me: "So, you see my point then?"
Rep: "No I dont"
Me: "Well, in that case, I'm outta here"

onecanshort: Stay as far as you can from Cingular. They were a nightmare.

Yeah, I've been leaning more towards T-Mobile, because that's what my fiancee has, and they've been good for her. I just am having trouble finding a phone that satisfies all of my criteria.

2005-04-19 04:34:45 PM
It's that chip they implanted under your skin that night you got drunk and passed out dreaming of anal probes. If the chip and your phone are both physically located at your home address than your reception is lowered significantly in an attempt to convince you that your landline is still neeeded.

onecanshort: Stay as far as you can from Cingular. They were a nightmare.

I've been with them for quite some time and never had any issues with their service, they were much better than AT&T for coverage in Southern California.

I also never deal with sales reps in local stores, I'm not surprised at the idiocy you had to deal with. I just wouldn't write off an entire company for the actions of one asshat, especially since cellular sales reps are about as transient as telemarketers.

Quick1, I have the Siemens SX66 PocketPC Phone.

In short, it rocks... totally and completely rocks. It has all that you're looking for as well as Bluetooth and WiFi. The sliding keyboard is pretty slick too. If you get your phone from Amazon, they have the best rebates.

my Sprint hasnt sucked too bad. not the best, but not terrible.

2005-04-19 04:48:54 PM
Okay, so you can't expect to have coverage EVERYWHERE. But, you just can't make a statement like his and not expect to piss people off.

Add him to the list of corporate tools that just don't get it.

/Cingular customer for 11 years, no complaints.

Why would you want to use a cell phone as your only phone?

It wouldn't be very comfortable or sound as good as a land line phone.

2005-04-19 04:50:41 PM
An attitude like that is the reason I dumped my Verizon cell phone service a year and a half ago. Their DSL service was a joke, too. Verizon can go piss up a rope.
Now I've got T-Mobile, and while there are still too many places I can't get reception (including my apartment), T-Mobile has managed not to piss me off too much yet.

2005-04-19 04:51:24 PM
I'll add another Verizon complaint. My company pays for mine, so I'm not in a position to switch, but it doesn't come in at my house... at my fiance's house... driving on the freeway...

I've never had any problems with cingular's service either, although, like Deveyn, I don't deal with in-store reps. I buy all my stuff online. Amazon has some good rebates, but Buy.com has some excellent ones as well. I once saw a phone that was $-170 after rebates. That's right, they essentially pay you to take the phone and sign up for service (2yr contract).

2005-04-19 04:52:18 PM
Deveyn: have the Siemens SX66 PocketPC Phone.

I think I'd like something a little more phone sized, though. I've been thinking about the Motorola v220.

I used to think "why would i want a cell phone as my only phone"... but given the amount I use the phone (rarely) and the cost of setting up both land and cell service, it's the only sensible option.

This quote I thought was also astoundingly stupid: (re: a municipal wi-fi network)
"It sounds like a good thing, but the trouble is someone will have to design it, someone will have to upgrade it, someone will have to maintain it and someone will have to run it."

First thing I thought: God forbid someone actually employ American workers to provide a public service! (yes, /sarcasm)

Umm... because you don't want to pay multiple phone bills maybe?

My old phone could never get a signal in my own house, for probably a couple different reasons. Got a new phone and switched to Cingular's GSM rather than AT&T's digital service and now it's fine everywhere I've tried! :)

Now i actually have a USE for the damn cell phone... heh.

2005-04-19 04:58:43 PM
Quick1 The battery on your old phone doesn't hold a charge and it's all the networks fault? Did you pay for a good phone or did you choose the free one that looked coolest?
