I'm not Catholic, why should I care?

Because the Pope of the Catholic Church is arguably one of the most powerful men in the entire world.

Well, for starters anyway...

If you dont believe, you think this is like politics. But if you believe, as I do, in the power of prayer, you know they will be illuminated to make the right choice, said Annick Vandamme, who travelled from Paris to witness the occasion.

Maybe that's why they wind up choosing unknowns -- just to spite those who think of it as a political matter.

Someone forgot to tell Cardinal Law he can't vote for himself.

Why should you care, suebhoney?

Well, it's a little known fact that the entire world is run by a secret group known as The Pentaverate. They meet once a year in a secret location in Colorado known as "The Meadows".

The Pentaverate consists of the Pope, the Rothschilds, the Gettys, the Queen, and Colonel Sanders.

(Why is the Colonel a part of this evildoing? Because he puts a secret addictive ingredient in his chicken that makes you crave it fortnightly. I never trusted the Colonel with his wee beady eyes.)

The deliberations of the Cardinals are kept secret, and they have no contact with the outside world until a pope is elected. The only communication allowed is to add a little wet straw to the ballots when they are burned after each vote, to make the smoke black. If a pope is elected, no straw is added and the smoke stays white. Once that happens, then the Dean of the Cardinals (in this case Ratzinger, if he is not elected) does announce it, beginning with the Latin words "Habemus Papam" - "We have a pope." The Pope is then presented to the public in St. Peter's Square, and he makes his first blessing and speech to the crowd.

/You asked...

(before he went teets up). Great "So I Married an Ax Murdered" reference by the way.

That was awesome, LarsThorwald.

2005-04-18 02:26:36 PM
Ummm, they do this multiple times a day, and last time it took something like a month of balloting?

Are they all going to be newsflashes??

//my answer :no

Uhmmmmmm... no. "Of the eight 20th century conclaves, none took longer than five days, and two were completed on the second day."

RTFA, sweetie.

2005-04-18 02:32:40 PM
Oh - and they ballot twice a day. In this case, as far as I know, it's scheduled for 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM EDT - but that time conversion may be bogus.

2005-04-18 02:32:59 PM

In a continuation of its coverage style for the last papal election, Fark.com will not run a story every time there isn't a new pope

Fark was a hoot back in 1978, let me tell you. Though, it was mainly Drew bringing comics he cut out of the newspaper with safety scissors to class with him.

The German Cardinal wants bigger ovens in the Vatican.

Carolyn I know I was being sarcastic and making fun of the Catholic church for their insane amount of rituals at every turn in religion.

/hates Catholicism and the bling bling

2005-04-18 02:36:24 PM
I thought they were voting for a new Einstein, or am I getting my threads crossed again?

2005-04-18 02:36:24 PM
Let tehm get on with it already. So many questions, sheesh, I don't think the Catholic Church was expecting some kind of Spanish Inquisition...

Little known fact: if the conclave is deadlocked, the new pope will be elected via drag racing.

2005-04-18 02:38:00 PM
apeman- first lol of my day, thanks

2005-04-18 02:38:07 PM
Shouldn't they let everyday Catholics vote on this? This is kind of like if we allowed the Supreme Court to select the president. Thank goodness that would never happen.

I thought they drew out of a jar of pickled eggs, and whoever got the black one gets to be Pope.

2005-04-18 02:39:01 PM
So if the pope is supposed to be the only infallible person on Earth, then why didn't he pick the next pope? Why let some fallible cardinals pick one of their own and elevate him to the status of infallible?

2005-04-18 02:39:13 PM
so the game of rock, paper, scissors went into overtime then?

I love the fact that in the days of satellite phones and mobile fax machines, some people still send info via smoke
