Also, some activists questioned the way in which the inmates were moved, according to reports.

I hate everyone who is worried about the comfort of these inmates.

Mesa just wants a monkey because Maricopa County has Sheriff Joe.

2005-04-18 01:33:05 PM
Can't this sheriff lose an election so I can stop hearing about his tactics? They obviously don't work since they had to build a new prison with larger capacity.

2005-04-18 01:34:34 PM
"This isn't a publicity stunt, this is their normal wear," Arpaio said. "What do you want me to do, put them in tuxedoes to move them?"

Uhh....

Sherriff Joe again? Can eh not stay out of teh news for his prison control tactics?

2005-04-18 01:41:42 PM
How far did they have to walk? Are we talking trail of tears? Was it a parade through the center of town? Is the new jail next door to the old one?

I don't really care, I just noticed it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the artcle.

2005-04-18 01:44:38 PM
They had to walk about 4 city blocks.

2005-04-18 01:45:40 PM
The local county jail used to do that. He put them in pink underware and pink outfits. The walls of the men's quarters were pink with a giant teddy bear with balloons painted on the wall.

I was on a tour of the prision and asked about it. The warden said it was to keep them from being aggressive. Considering they were there for reason like owing back support or writing bad checks I thought it was harsh.

I bet this sherriff was a right bastard in junior high.

I hate this stupid vigilante bullshiat. It is not a sheriff's place to decide that an inmate's sentence includes humiliation.

Like it or not, even inmates deserve rights. The most horrible human being in the world deserves the right to a fair trial, due process, and serving no more and no less than his or her court-decided sentence.

otakucode: I bet this sherriff was a right bastard in junior high.

Hahahaha! No kidding.

2005-04-18 01:49:24 PM
pink boxers and flip flops aren't normal prison attire...they don't go to court in pink boxers. They have Normal prison attire why were they not wearing them?

humiliation if it's good enough for terrorist prisoners it's good enough for the dude who had a quarter pound of weed.

Thanks. I don't think I would qualify this as "inhumane", but I find it interesting that the person writing the article would leave out a detail like this.

My thoughts exactly.

So they don't give them shirts in prison???

wtf??

btw, I hope they have one of those little buttons to keep the fly closed, or that could be embarassing!

2005-04-18 02:15:20 PM
Good. Prison should suck. They make it far too comfortable for them, IMHO. We have to make prison a place they really really do not want to go, ever. Put friggin bows in their hair and give em all the teddy bears they can hold.

It's supposed to be punishment!

2005-04-18 02:21:48 PM
freda neato: It's supposed to be punishment!

The punishments need to be decided by the justice system and made official. If there is a need to add humiliation to official sentencing, it needs to be clearly laid out as to how and to what degree it is to be carried out. It needs to be consistent at the state level at the very least. It is NOT the place for an overzealous minor official to take into his own hands.

If my sentencing documents from the court include being dressed up in pink underwear and marched through the streets, so be it. If a judge and jury did not hand that down as part of my sentence, fark off.

I don't think prison is a resort Freda. I wonder if you've ever actually visited one or spoken to someone who has been incarcerated. I don't think it's a requirement to having an oppinnion but I don't think it would hurt.

I'm not arguing for us to treat prisoners as precious snowflakes but I would argue that we should follow the law. If you want humiliation and belittling of the human spirit to be part of the punishment then it should be written in the law.

like:

A.S.S. 43:75:040 Prison should be bad and as such a county or burrow sherrif is required to demonstrate that prisoners have lost what it means to be human. And anyone who falls under the title prisoner should henceforth not be treated with human decency.

/what so ever we do to the least of these...(sometimes christians tick me off but then sometimes they make a good point)

2005-04-18 02:29:30 PM
"This isn't a publicity stunt, this is their normal wear," Arpaio said. "What do you want me to do, put them in tuxedoes to move them?"

All inmates made it safely to their cells.

Nothing to see here folks... and 4 city blocks isnt that far.

Sven_Burger: They're all white?

new keyboard, please!

They don't call it "federal pound me in the ass prison" for nothin!

If cancer survivors were angry about pink Arkansas practice jerseys, wait until they get a load of this.

"The most horrible human being in the world deserves the right to a fair trial, due process, and serving no more and no less than his or her court-decided sentence."

I would assume that they're in jail because they have had a fair trial, due process and were found guilty. Any deterrent to jail time, such as spending it in pink nighties should be encouraged. Make jail such a horrible place even the worst of human beings would do anything to stay out.

(those waiting for trial tho, I might agree)

2005-04-18 03:17:41 PM
pink boxers and flip flops are normal prison attire

I assume it's to make the "pound you in the ass" part of prison life easier to implement.

It wasn't me.

/that is all.

2005-04-18 04:03:47 PM
Phatcat77, you don't know the half of it, man.

You should have seen Sheriff Joe and his lackeys on television recently. They were VERY proud of their efforts moving all these prisoners, and likened it to a "cattle drive." It was disturbing.

I used to agree with most of Arpaio's tactics, until he and his jackbooted Gestapo turned their attentions to busting up local Phoenix swingers clubs and nudist resorts. This is in spite of the fact that Phoenix has a very public methampetamine production track-record -- but it was easier to bust the consenting adults, instead, I guess.

"You got a purdy mouth. ...and nice bloomers too"

2005-04-18 06:30:24 PM
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Also, some activists questioned the way in which the inmates were moved, according to reports.

Yes, lets feel sad for the murderers, dead beat dads, rapists and pedophiles.

2005-04-18 06:50:20 PM
This is absurd. We aren't even pretending to try to rehabilitate convicts anymore. We just throw them in hobbesian fark-you-in-the-ass prison. We should hope that they get killed while behind bars, because I sure wouldn't want anyone who goes through this walking the streets. They'll come out meaner and nastier than when they went in. If you want punishment only, convert prisons to torture chambers. If I recall correctly, Saddam had a good one we can learn from.

One day, when he was naughty, Mr Bunnsy looked over the hedge into Farmer Fred's field and it was full of green lettuces. Mr Bunnsy, however, was not full of lettuces. This did not seem fair.

They're all white?

White is the new black.

I don't understand what the problem is?
if they were WHITE would it be ok?
Is the issue with the PINK?

Let's ask all the people who were raped and killed by these inmates...
Do you have a problem with walking in line wearing pink underwear?

What? You can't walk anywhere because you're dead because one of these guys killed you? Oh, nevermind then.

2005-04-18 06:52:38 PM
Yay, another multi-million dollar lawsuit. Thanks Joe.

2005-04-18 06:54:00 PM
Having them march to the new prison is perfectly acceptable.

Having them march to the new prison only clad in pink boxers is possibly not. I would say that it's justified if they had been misbehaving recently. But if the warden merely felt like it, I don't think he has full justification.

2005-04-18 06:54:02 PM
Go get em' Joe. No sympathy for murderers, rapists, and the whole lot of them all. You get incarcerated, you lose rights we have as law-abiding citizens.

2005-04-18 06:54:10 PM
Wow, so much sympathy for these dregs of society. I wouldnt care if they were dressed in french maids outfits and forced to skip hand in hand to techno music. Hell, I would pay a dollar to see that.

Whoah, I just had a flashback to reading that book at my grandmother's house 20-odd years ago. I always felt sorry for that rabbit.

The color isn't an issue. Some places make prisoners wear pink to make them less hostile or something.

But why did they have to be in their underwear?

It is teh funnay anyway.

2005-04-18 06:54:52 PM
Y'all seem so sure that all of these people deserve torture, I am surprised you've even heard of the Bill of Rights. Who the fark needs unlawful search and seizure rights? Just give the cops BFG's and let them blow away any "perps" they spot!

After all, cops never ever make mistakes. Why bother with the whole "trial" thing?

I dont care about humiliating people who has been convicted for a crime, for he did harm the society.

But can you be SURE he committed a crime? There is no certainty, so you give the criminals rights so that the ones who are wrongly convicted (there must be some) can atleast have some protection.

Fark em, the jail is probably nicer digs than they came from and YOU AND I are paying for it. It should bother everyone that due to someone disobeying the laws of our society, which we make, we have to pay for them while they serve their punishment. While I know we have to house and feed them while they serve their time, I do not feel any remorse for them being humiliated. I also think they should have to work a standard 40 hour workweek in a prison industry with the proceeds of their labor going to either the state or if applicable to the person/people they harmed.

2005-04-18 06:56:37 PM
so long, cruel and unusual punishment
