Best headline yet

2005-04-17 01:18:27 PM
Why didn't he avoid it? Garri Kasparov has more moves than a Russian chess player...oh wait.

2005-04-17 04:51:05 PM
"...to joke darkly that, luckily in the Soviet Union, chess and not baseball was popular."

or javelin

2005-04-17 04:53:35 PM
Someone want to explain the headline to me?

2005-04-17 04:54:59 PM
What happened, is there a Yakov Smirnov filter?

2005-04-17 04:58:08 PM
Jozabad: What happened, is there a Yakov Smirnov filter?

But of course!

And thank God too. I can't stand Yakov jokes.

Checkerboard not mentioned in the article. Anyone have any idea what the deal with the headline is?

2005-04-17 05:04:09 PM
Would anyone happen to know what party Kasprov is a part of?

MikeXpop: Someone want to explain the headline to me?

In checkers when you get a piece to the other side of the board, you crown it so it becomes a king, and can now move backwards whereas normal pieces can't.

The pun then comes into play by using crown in the sense of hitting someone on the head.

This guy knows chess and then some :).
You can actually have all the guys in the world over for dinner who would be able to easily beat him. You're not going to fill a big room. You're going to have a hard time filling a small room.

The same rotten character as all the other top players, but that's the nature of the game.

I hope he realises Putin will absolutely kill his ass if he's too much of an inconvenience.

Huh? Easily beat him? In what fantasyland? Very few people in the world can compete with him, let alone beat him. There are a handful that stand a chance, and none of them would do it easily.

2005-04-17 05:09:11 PM
Since you crown the piece, not the board... headline still was crap, I think.

2005-04-17 05:09:33 PM
Whenever I play checkers, the verb is "king" rather than "crown," which syntactically makes no sense, but we've always said "king me" when we reach the edge. Odd headline, anyway.

Umm that's sort of the point of the joke BrassHat was making.

2005-04-17 05:14:20 PM
Yeah thats a pretty badheadline.. I got the joke.. but it had reached so far off the article that it was a little pathetic.

FTFA: Kasparov was not injured Friday when he was hit with the chessboard after signing it for a young man at an event in Moscow.

To explain, here is a picture of a checker board:

I'll let you figure out the rest.

stupid headline. The humor was way too forced.

In Soveit Russia, Yakov filters you!

As a chess champion, Kasparov should've seen that move coming.

//really off to play OppFor

Why doesn't someone do this to that anti-Semite bunghole Bobby Fisher? Use a marble board while you're at it.

JJORSETT - WORD.. someone needs to smash his face in with a hammer.

2005-04-17 05:30:20 PM
I always confuse Checkers with Rallys.

2005-04-17 05:30:58 PM
That was a weak headline, it could have been funny, but submitter went overboard.

2005-04-17 05:42:46 PM
Garri Kasparov plays chess? I thought that was the Russian Spice Girl...Commie Spice.

2005-04-17 06:02:16 PM
Waaaayyyy better than the headline I thought of.

2005-04-17 06:02:47 PM
And college liberals rejoice.

2005-04-17 06:03:53 PM
Man confuses Checkers with Chess, crowns Garri Kasparov.

would have been a much better headline, IMO

2005-04-17 06:12:47 PM
This entire incident sounds like a zen parable.

He who is a grandmaster must be hit in the head with a board by he who wants politics to be not ruled by those who are chess players.

(pushes little brother into river)

Putin the House Elf still thinks that violence works against politicians.

To be fair he likely has a legitimate mental disease that continues to go untreated. It's amazing how many people have pounced on the guy while so many other sane people are bigger assholes. He should be pitied and treated.

Obviously the pawns are not amused by the headline.

I beat Kasparov last week, not sure why so many people think it's such a big deal to beat him.

2005-04-17 06:38:37 PM
Since you crown the piece, not the board... headline still was crap, I think.

Amen to that.

2005-04-17 06:54:07 PM
What no War Games references? "Hello Doctor Falken, how about a nice game of chess".

2005-04-17 08:08:29 PM
This incident came just after the leader of a pro-Putin (and proto-fascist) youth movement denounced Kasparov for daring to oppose Putin ahead of the 2008 presidential elections. More here:

Nashi Vows to Fight Liberals, Bureaucrats

Kasparov Hit With a Chessboard

Kasparov doesn't belong to any party as such, but has announced his plan to run in those election.

Obnoxious Personality Disorder?

Just cuz I think Fisher's pond scum doesn't mean I don't have plenty of scorn left over for the Martha Stewarts of the world. And if someone wants to try to cure Bobbie with electroshock and leeches, I won't object.

Complete the Quote!!

Yesterday, I was just about able to muster up enough humour to joke darkly that, luckily in the Soviet Union...

Gary Kasparov is responsible for my discovery of fark. I was looking at results for a match between Kasparov and a computer on Chessbase and saw this article on their front page, along with a Photoshop of Gary as a DJ (and a "Free Kevin" bumper sticker on his turntable). Hooked for life.

2005-04-18 06:06:03 AM
As usual, Chessbase is there, with links and interview.

2005-04-18 09:36:34 AM
Isn't there some headline about a handstand and a chess board? Is this a play on that?
