Great headline. Huzzah!

Is anybody else freaked out by this? I mean, Yankee Stadium is an icon, and knowing how much baseball fans are purists...there'll be serious backlash against this. Right?

Haven't the Sox been planning one for a while? All you Sox bandwagon creeps make me sick.

OldManStoli

it may be an icon, but its also a dump compared with the MLB's newer stadiums.

STKMKT

They've been CONSIDERING one, but backed off in the face of massive protests, and the new ownership has been investing a lot in fenway.

Well I can't speak for all baseball fans but I'm all for anything crapping on Yankee's traditions.

And Golf clap for the submitter.

STKMKT,

Actually, no. The Mayor, Mumbles, has said many times that the city will not fund a new park. The local residents in the Fenway would surely fight a new park in that area, and a developer offered a parcel by the water but, since the city won't pick up part of the tab, there was no follow through. The Sox ownership is planning to expand seating to get to about 40k seats by next season, it was on the local news tonight actually. It looks like they're staying, atleast until it crumbles around them.

2005-04-16 10:56:10 PM
STKMKT,

Also, you're in NJ. At least we have our own team to root for.

2005-04-16 10:56:16 PM
Hunh... imagine that, a sports team paying for their stadium. We need to see more of that.

I love that Dirty Water.
I bet it STILL smells like champagne in the visitors clubhouse of Yankee Stadium.

2005-04-16 10:57:46 PM
Nah...no way the Yankees EVER move out of the Stadium. It's a damn landmark, as is good ol' stiiiiiiiinkin' Fenway. Can't happen. Never happen.

/could it?

2005-04-16 10:58:11 PM
yeah STKMKT, suck it

I would hate to see Yankee Stadium go...
I've been there a few times for games and it really is a nice place.

The thing I would hate to see is some corporate name on the new Yankee Stadium, cause I just hate how naming rights to stadiums are sold. So stupid how advertising is everywhere now.

And to all the Sox fans:
Will you now admit to having a crappy team between 1918 and 2004, or will you still say that is just some curse?

2005-04-16 11:01:33 PM
CapHwys

Most real Sox fans don't blame some curse. Not saying they get the blame right all the time, but they don't blame some supernatural force.

2005-04-16 11:01:46 PM
It's a pretty good plan. Yankee Stadium has a few shortcomings:

- Limited concession stands. Lines long.
- Limited bathrooms... lines long
- Those tier seats up top in the outfield are in nowhere land. Even the foul poll is a mile away.
- Transportation there is a biatch. Subway can't handle it. Parking? non existant. Buses? Yea right.
- Because of the above... toursts want to go to the stadium decide not to.. lost revenue.

IMHO Baltimore was brilliant with the waterfront idea. Brings in fans as well as tourists. Hotels near by, good places to eat etc.

The Bronx is coming back. If NYC holds up their end of the bargain and actually rebuilds the area a bit... NY will generate a rather hansome sum of cash from the tourists. If NYC backs down and doesn't redevelop, only the yankeees will benefit.

I can personally attest to quite a few "real" BoSox fans biatching about The Curse when it was unbroken, i.e. NOT THE BANDWAGON JUMPERS THERE ARE NOW. As I said in some previous thread, I have no idea when this "Let's blame The Curse on Dan Shaughnessy" memo got started, but it's gotta stop.

That, and the "REEEEEEEEEAL Sox fans would NEVAH insult A-Rod or Jeter, wear the offensive shirts, say the offensive chants, etc." Bullshiat, skippy.

2005-04-16 11:12:20 PM
I know a few BoSox fans and we had our fun.
And yes, the true BoSox fans are always civil about the win.
I also know some bandwagon fans who only celebrated cause the Yankees were ousted last year.

2005-04-16 11:14:13 PM
I'm a "real" red sox fan, have been since I was 10 years old in 1984. I got a red sox tattoo in 1997 when they sucked.

So yes I consider my self a real red sox fan and I proudly wear my "Arod is an Ahole" tshirt and find great joy in seeing the sox win AND the yanks lose.

2005-04-16 11:15:04 PM
robsul82

Although he sucks, I have a healthy amount of respect for the way Jeter plays the game.

But, I'll insult A-Rod.

To the other topic, I'm sorry but I just don't consider Mike from Southie a great fan if he insists that we're doomed to lose every year. I'm using my definition of a fan here.

People who believe in the Curse act(ed?) like that and it's so annoying to watch a game with those people it makes everything less pleasant about watching. That's why I don't consider them fans.

The Sox could be up 9-1 in the ninth with 2 out and they're all doom and gloom. Ugh.

2005-04-16 11:32:19 PM
part of building the stadium is similar to a tax deduction:

THe yankees make enough that they have to give a boat load back to MLB... if they build a new stadium they can put that money towards a new stadium.

What would you do? Build a new stadium? Or give it to MLB Inc?

At least this way the yanks get a new stadium rather than buy Bud Selig yet another car.

2005-04-16 11:33:27 PM
Why did it become acceptable for the taxpayers to fund sports venues again? One of these days, I want someone - SOMEONE, ANYONE - at some City Hall to have a guts to stand up and say enough is enough. I'd have thought that the people of NYC would lynch somebody in a position of power for the screwjob the Olympic complex is going to create. The amount of money promised to fund the complex is more than the city will bring in for both the Super Bowl AND the 2012 Olympics - and they've admitted they'll end up losing money. I know a city is supposed to have pride in their teams, but it's getting farking ridiculous.

2005-04-16 11:35:42 PM
Hmm. "The true...fans are always civil about the win." Nubian, please. "I consider myself a real...fan and find great joy in seeing the Sox win and Yanks lose." Good, at least you're honest. "I'll insult A-Rod." Good. You're a fan of the other team. Go for it.

I'm just sick and tired of this noses-in-the-air "reeeeeeeeal fans would never besmirch themselves by chanting obscene words" when all of Fenway is rocking, etc. The same way you BoSox fans fly up the wall when the Yankees like to prance around as The Classiest - Nay, the Franchise That INVENTED the Word - Team in the History of Sports? That's the same way we Yankee fans are feeling about "we NEVAH believed in The Curse and WHAT 'A-Rod Sucks, Jeter Swallows' shirts?!?"

BTW, the Sox are two games in front of the Yankees. 6-5 ain't no great shakes either, but hey - Yankees fans aren't the ones micurating themselves after 11 games into a 162-trip marathon.

See you in the ALCS...oh, you know it'll happen.

/Yankees in seven
//gotta be SOME balance, y'know?

2005-04-16 11:37:11 PM
I don't even like baseball, I certainly have no love for the socks.

But I hate the yankees... I bet if you gave me twice as much money as any other team I could win too! They suck so hard they have to cover their team in green to stand a chance at winning.

F*ck the yankees. F*ck them in the ear.

2005-04-16 11:41:15 PM

The Rockies have at least one fan.

Gotta be loyal throughout the lean years. There's nothing worse than an asshat bandwagoner claiming "I was with you all the way" when a previously-sucky team gets good.*

*Rockes getting good: Approximately 2015. Owner sucks.

2005-04-16 11:41:57 PM
Oh, and about the "Steinbrenner spends and spends" argument - on behalf of all Yankee fans everywhere, we solemnly apologize that YOUR team owner thought it'd be a kick in the head to own an MLB franchise. The Yankee owner happens to like winning championship rings. If you don't like it, K.C. Royals fans (and you are legion), go biatch to your owner.

Steinbrenner is PO' among MLB owners...that's just a little fun fact for you.

And in case ESPN convinced you otherwise, the Boston Red Sox were not David slaying Goliath (going by payrolls). The Yankee payroll IS quite a bit higher than Boston, but Boston is still a solid numero deuce. So spare me, William Simmons, with your "greatest comeback ever We Believe all media hated us Johnny Damon cures cancer our payroll - WHAT payroll, our players pay EPSTEIN to get to play for the BoSox" BS.

I would like to pre-emptively avoid being called a bandwagoneer by publicly professing my love for my home team: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays, so in about 800 years when they finally make the playoffs you guys won't be able to tell me I just like them because they got good.

One woman on the DC City Council tried what you suggest, and you would have thought she was calling for a law to shoot people for jaywalking.

I believe the final outcome was that the city would TRY to get at least 50% of the funding from private businesses. Of course, they will be condemming a number of private businesses in the proposed area for the new stadium. Not to mention a special tax levied on ALL private businesses to help pay for the stadium.

Then of course, DC gets a large part of its' budget from Federal payments. And now it looks like the armed forces may be paying $60mil for "naming rights". So I guess all taxpayers will be in on the funding.

This is in a city where many schools are literally falling apart. Bridges and overpasses are crumbling.

I'm not a big baseball fan, but I do think having a team in DC could be good for the city. I still don't see spending half a billion dollars on a stadium, then handing it over to a new owner, who will probably demand all of the take from parking and concessions along with a tax break.

2005-04-17 12:36:24 AM
If NY refuses to fund the Stadium, will Steinbrenner pull a Modell and move the team?

/Of course not

2005-04-17 12:58:04 AM
Every team has BANDWAGONERS when the team is winning. You really think all the Yankee fans now were fans back in the early 90's? I don't think so.

Give me a break about all this bandwagon bullshiat. The Sox are the best, Chistopher Trotman "Trot" Nixon is their right fielder, and in a few more weeks, New York will have a Mets fan, Yankee fan ratio of 2 to 1.

New York is the Capital of Bandwagon Fans.

2005-04-17 01:03:03 AM
Steinbrenner, you ass. In all major team sports, there are a few teams per league that just plain BELONG in their stadium. The Yankees are one of them. If another team makes a new stadium, whatever. If one of THESE teams moves out, chaos. For years. You seriously messed up. The teams?

MLB:
Cubs- Wrigley Field, Red Sox- Fenway Park, Yankees- Yankee Stadium, Dodgers- Dodger Stadium, Orioles- Camden Yards
(The list also used to include the Tigers.)

NFL:
Packers- Lambeau Field, Bears- Soldier Field, Chiefs- Arrowhead Stadium, Cowboys- Texas Stadium, Saints- Superdome

NBA:
Pistons- Palace of Auburn Hills, Knicks- Madison Square Garden, Kings- ARCO Arena

NHL- well, nobody anymore, but if anyone cared, it would be:
Rangers- MSG, Mighty Ducks- Arrowhead Pond, Flames- Saddledome, Red Wings- Joe Lewis Arena

College football:
Well, lots. Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio St., USC, Alabama, Cal, Notre Dame, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Auburn, Penn St., Iowa, Tennessee and Georgia most easily come to mind.

College basketball:
Lots here too. Duke, Kansas, Penn, Kentucky, New Mexico, Syracuse, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Louisville are the best ones here.
