You might want to fix the link that goes to the monkeygumbo.com site. Seems to be missing the second "/" after the "http:" bit.

Behold the power of Fark!

2005-04-13 04:21:04 PM
Wohoo!

2005-04-13 04:23:04 PM
Wow. Is there nothing firefox (and fark) can't do?

Oh yeah. I just thought of something.

One question... the description when you install the extension says it puts the status on the status bar, but it actually (as the web site says) changes the title of the window.

Any chance for a next version to put it on the status bar, so I can keep track of Henry and Abe at the same time?

2005-04-13 04:23:22 PM
Magnificent!

2005-04-13 04:23:25 PM
It changes the pagename. That just doesnt work for me.

2005-04-13 04:23:34 PM
I'm a fan of both Henry and Firefox so I've been waiting for this. But is there any way we can put it in with the tool bars or something instead of in the title of the window?

Damnit, I can never get these extentions to work. This is the exact same thing that happened to me with that Abe Vigoda one. =(

2005-04-13 04:26:23 PM
what about a "is drew sober" firefox extension?

2005-04-13 04:27:54 PM
This would be great if it were on the bottom with all my other Firefox extensions - having it replace my page title will just annoy me, so I had to install it. Good idea, needs better execution.

Thanks anyway, though - seriously!

2005-04-13 04:28:35 PM
Err - uninstall it. Sorry.

2005-04-13 04:32:52 PM
Very nice.

2005-04-13 04:33:11 PM
It had it at the firefox home page - but then it disappeared when I went to TF's site. Meh.

2005-04-13 04:37:57 PM
I agree that the idea is awesome, but I must concur that it would be a lot cooler if it displayed in the status bar. Maybe have it just display "drinking" or "jailed" in the status bar, and then give the rest of the info when you hover the mouse pointer over it.

I'd say include in the hover window either his arrest or release date depending on whether he is in jail or out, respectively.

This is awsome!

monkeygumbo rocks.

2005-04-13 04:43:06 PM
valiant attempt... but the follow through is no good.
If you read the linked site... the title name changes when you change pages... and the status is in the title bar. It refreshes every half hour. So maybe after sitting at a page for 30 minutes you get an update?

I'd prefer a whole new "toolbar" line with the status (that can be closed) or better yet something on the bottom status bar.

2005-04-13 04:46:28 PM
Like the idea, don't like the delivery. Needs to be in the status bar. I was worried when the description mentioned the title bar, and my fears were realized when I saw it up there.

2005-04-13 04:46:53 PM
could do with a screenshot so i know what i'm getting into!

How 'bout a "Fark Server Status" extension?

-not Farked
-somewhat Farked
-completly Farked
-give up and go to bed

2005-04-13 05:00:01 PM
Not enough people use the Farkit extension. Insanely useful.

And zolividor, that's actually a great idea.

2005-04-13 05:00:03 PM
Any source to this extension or a similar one? I want to make a basic extension that'll just grab particular pieces of text from a site but don't know where the hell to begin.

2005-04-13 05:01:06 PM
Thanks Wee! ~ You did well :)

Wow. a FF extension that tracks a useless piece of sh*t drunk who wasted his life and people seem to think of him as a folk hero. How brilliant. carry on...

I wrote an extension like that around two months ago, but didn't get round to doing anything with it till today when I saw the '906' thread.

I sent it to wee (the monkeygumbo.com) bloke, so it may appear there at some point.

2005-04-13 05:10:52 PM
damn Wee..that sure was quick! A+ for effort C+ on the extension...the page title thing....

2005-04-13 05:15:49 PM
Great. I installed it. Didn't like the placement in the title bar and tried to uninstall it. After restarting firefox, it's still there. After restarting computer, it's still there. WTF?

2005-04-13 05:24:39 PM
I like it. It only shows up on my homepage, so when I first load firefox, I can see his status. After that, the page titles are normal. Like I really need the title to appear for fark anyways. I already know I'm on the happiest site on earth.

2005-04-13 05:25:55 PM
i liked this extension better when it was called the 'abe vigoda status extension'.

Works for me. Only shows up on my home page, opening another window, title bar shows correct site title. Firefox 1.0.2

Here in Wellington (NZ) we have our own kinda Henry Earl - known as the "Blanket Man" he wears only a blanket and lives on the streets, winter/summer.

Another cool feature of Firefox is this status bar near the top that tells you what site you're reading. For example, this is Fark. Lighten up dude.

Current Status:
Henry is currently in jail. He was booked on 4/12/2005.

Cute extention, but it would be nicer if the status didn't appear in the title bar up top. The status bar makes all too much sense.

YAY, my first link. Anyway, to address some comments:
Deschain
thanks, I fixed the link to Wee's monkeygumbo site.

many others
I first tried to put Henry's Status in the browser's status bar. However, it turns out that by default Firefox disables updating the status bar via javascript. So I would have had to include instructions for changing your firefox setup to allow the extension to work. So I decided to put it in the title bar. I chose that way so it doesn't interfere with your regular surfing, and doesn't take up any more space in your toolbar. So you get to see his status when you start firefox, and every half hour in case you leave the window open to fark all day. But if you can't wait, you can just click the link in the Tool menu to refresh his status and it will change your title bar back to Henry's current status.

Thanks again to Wee for posting the RSS feed on his site that the extension uses!

By the way, extensions are SUPER easy to edit, so if you don't like the half hour thing, or you want it to go in your status bar- it's really easy to change the javascript code for the extension to do that. Enjoy.

2005-04-13 07:15:41 PM
Hmm, after re-reading the comments, SOO many people preferred the status bar. I did too, but as I said, it won't let me update the status bar by default. How about this, for those of you who MUST have it in the status bar, I'll kick out a status bar version tonight and post it on that page.

I'll include instructions for setting your firefox to allow javascript to modify the status bar (or the extension won't work). Look for it by 10pm PST.

BTW, I'm not WEE in case that wasn't clear.

The thing I miss the most about Lexington since I moved is Henry Earl and the other intoxicated, friendly folk who lived/slept/whatever in Phoenix Park. I'd walk through the park on the way to Buster's so often that the gentlemen got to know me and my habits well. I remember one night when a friend of Henry's tried to bum a cigarette from me, and Henry's reply was, "No, man, she don't smoke!".

I encourage everyone to send a little donation Henry's way ( details on the link ) or at least buy a shirt/mug/mousepad so he'll get a portion of the proceeds.

2 questions

How does he come up with enough cash to get him drunk on a daily basis?

What is the state of his liver?

2005-04-13 09:16:16 PM
Pokey_Underwood

He is a local legend and is given free alcohol by college students all the time.

His liver is probably doing fine... he gets arrested before he can do any real damage to himself.

OK, as promised for all you farkers wanting a status bar version, the site is updated with an extension that displays the status on the status bar.

If you already have the title bar version installed, you MUST uninstall it, close firefox, and open it again BEFORE installing this version. Otherwise if you uninstall the old one and install the new one at the same time, firefox will screw up the installation of the new one.

Enjoy!

We're another step closer to the Where The Fark Are My Car Keys? Firefox Extension.

StinkyPinky

Thanks! I'm not sure how many people downloaded the extension. Over 10K so far to the page. My website stats don't update until the next day for individual items. So I'll know tomorrow how many people downloaded the extension.

Someone suggested it on a thread yesterday and I just started laughing, it was such a funny idea, I had to do it. So I found some example code for extensions, and muddled my way through.

2005-04-13 11:11:09 PM
So where can I get said "Farkit" extension?
