Nice reference!

So do they just get to call elections whenever in the UK? Or was this a predetermined date allowing for the most political bashing possible?

I'd rather fondle some boobies.

Pretty much, though I believe 5 years is the longest possible time before a General Election has to be called.

The people vote for Parliament, not the PM. The PM is chosen from the winning party in Parliament.

Also, the political bashing started months ago with Alan Milburn's hilarious "Michael Howard is a filthy Jew" posters.

I was hoping the labour party would dump Blair for Robin Cook before the election, oh well, I guess Labour has to lose before Cook can become leader.

At least they won't have the intermidable campaign cycle. What, four weeks? I could handle campaigns like that.

"...Liable to fall by the wayside is... legislation to make incitement to racial hatred a crime."

Wrong. We already have that legislation. The new legislation is against incitement to religious hatred (Muslims, basically). Likely to fail on the crucial "Life of Brian" test, eg could the Pythons have made that film under the new law?

The people vote for Parliament, not the PM. The PM is chosen from the winning party in Parliament.

And in a follow-up question, that leads to no discernable "term limit" for a prime minister?

Great. Just great.

See, guys, we're stuck in a bad position here.

The Tories (Conservatives) are too busy fighting amungst themselves and really have no hope of running a decent government if they get in. They're pandering to the racist anti-immigrant feeling right now with their sick campaign slogan "Are you thinking what we're thinking?" Plus, Michael Howard is a vampire. And if elected, he will suck what blood is left of the country out of it.

The Liberal Democrats really need a few more years to even have a chance of being in charge. Only now are they starting to look like a real party.

Labour is, sadly, really the only party capable of anything right now. The only thing truly standing between another Labour government and any other is that little Iraq adventure. And Blair. If Blair was dropped as party leader in favour of Gordon Brown, I know a lot of people who could vote for Labour just fine in terms of their conscience. But due to Iraq, a lot of tradition Labour voters will be taking their votes elsewhere..either the LibDems or smaller parties such as Respect and the Greens.

So, I think it will probably be Blair to win. But don't expect him to last long. If he wins, I don't think it will be too long before there is a vote of no confidence in him, and we then see Brown become PM.

I'd prefer Brown as PM anyday over Blair. He's much more of an Old-Labour type.

"Why should we break our backs,

Stupidly paying tax?"

- sounds like Tory fiscal policy to me, I can't see the problem.

(especially as Michael Howard is a filthy, duplicitous, money grabbing toad who happens to be Jewish)

They'd bring back Kinnock before they gave Cook a shot at leadership.

No. The longest a party can stay in power until they are required to call a general election is, I believe, 5 years.

In a parliamentary democracy the sitting govt sets the date.

And for Americans who wonder:

Labour = "Democratic Socialists". Well, thier party constitution still says this, but they haven't done anything very Socialistic (or Democratic, for that matter) for some time now.

Conservatives = Conservative. Not as conservative as American Conservatives, mind you. They actually supported things such as gay marriage, which US conservatives would never support.

Liberal Democrats = a bit more towards the left. They do have some policies that lean a bit more rightward. But they support measures like legalizing Cannabis. And they openly admit they will have to raise taxes if they win. Which is a good bit of honesty, as all parties will pretty much have to raise taxes, but Labour and the Tories claim they won't. Typical.

Better--what if QEII put Blair and his merry band of dorks on acid?

Hrm... Tony might pick up a guitar again...

Scratch that idea.

I don't know squat point zip about Britains domestic politics but as an American I thought that Blair was a true ally. He was the first and most vocal of all Government leaders to announce solidarity with us after 9/11.
I also like how he handles himself in the parlimentary questions I see on Cspan. Of course Thatcher was pretty good at zingers and one-liners too.
