It was the implicit threat to make public these letters and the British rebuttals that finally tipped the balance and persuaded the government in 1911 to pay him an annual pension of 140 pounds in exchange for the correspondence.

After news of Vambery's death, the National Debt Office refunded one quarter of the pension to the government official who had been personally responsible for paying it.


This guy was paying the spy's pension out of his own pocket, just to help keep it secret? Now THAT's hardcore.

But what's with the government only refunding a quarter of it? Boo.

I find this interesting in light of Brian Lumley's vampire novels, in which the vampire hunters actually are british spies.

Eerie... I just recently started reading Dracula. It's easily one of the most suspense-filled books I've read so far. Of course, I am a Tom Clancy fan...
