FINALLY. Other countries have been usin' this treatmentification for years. When Methadone clinics were first bein' formed, there was a debatify on which of the two "medications" to use to help users kick the habit. Knowin' all of the facts back then (1978), the good ol' USA decided to stick with Methadone -- I mean --even though Bupe was a clearly superior treatmentification method. Call it a consipiracy theory, but it looks like the governmentification simply decided -- I mean --hey, let's get our $15/day and get users hooked on our stuff, by golly. Profit!

"Any questions?" he asks. One employee is still confused about why Reckitt Benckiser needs help marketing its drug. If anything, pharmaceutical firms promote their products too well, turning millions of otherwise sensible Americans into Googling hypochondriacs, and doctors into vending machines.

"They are not a pharmaceutical company," Kolodny replies. "They make Lysol."

"Woolite, also," adds another employee. "And French's mustard," Kolodny says, smiling a bit. The room breaks up laughing. "How did they come up with this?" another staffer asks. "Were they injecting Woolite?"

"I hope they're not making all this stuff in the same lab," a guy in the back mutters.

From page 2 of the article ... humor and woolite!

What happened to using ibogaine to help addiction?

2005-04-01 05:45:04 PM
The government has too much invested in drug-related law enforcement to ever support a medication that helps addicts kick.

Jane says "conspiracy".

Great, just in time to treat the recent surge in heroin addicts since we started occupying Afghanistan. I'm not trying to troll here, just making some conclusions based off the observations from some of my online friends around the country who have had their friends turn into herion addicts all of the sudden. Sadly, these people are all in the 15-19 age range. :/

Basicaly what I'm saying is it looks like the drug market is being flooded with heroin.

"Wow, I thought I knew what ridiculous was, until this day."

I didn't know that you could just ask your doctor for drugs specifically designed for drug abusers. That's pretty sweet IMO. OTOH WTF happens if you ask your doctor for some marijuana joints because you're tired of growing it on your own?

2005-04-01 05:52:07 PM
Props on Trainspotting. Best movie of all time. Anyway, going through heroin additiction myself, I can attest that methadone is far far far far worse to get off of than heroin is in the first place. It's evil stuff.

casey17: What happened to using ibogaine to help addiction?

Good point! Ibogaine is hands down the most effective treatment for addiction. The problem with Ibogaine is it isn't patentable. These 12-step-type programs that the government forces people into (in order to avoid a jail term) have a single-digit success rate, yet are highly profitable. The rehab lobbyists won't ever let Ibogaine eliminate their industry. Look for more demonization of Ibogaine, specifically media rehashes of the single death attributed to Ibogaine (because a user lied about taking heroin the day of her treatment).

The War on (Some) Drugs is still a racket.

She'll give you some. If you're Canadian and on the list, that is.

But government pot is as effective as, well, anything else controlled by the government.

Thanks Snake6, but fortunately I've been clean for coming up on a year now. The best decision I've ever made coming out of the worst decision I've ever made. And, if anyone gives a damn, NEVER think of going the needle route, with any drug. I jumped from heroin to meth to coke that way (which coke is without a doubt the worst thing that can happen to you). Most of the drug info from the government is propoganda, but they aren't joking when it comes to needles. It's very, very difficult to turn back when you reach that level - if you do it once, your eyes are immediately opened and you gain an understanding, and high, that can't be passed along with words.

Pull out your tin foil hats, here comes the theories.

The war on drugs keep our streets safe. Money, paid by addicts gets confiscated to support more officers on the streets, who pick up people for other crimes as well as NON-violent drug crime.

What do you think will happen to our level of police corruption when there's no obvious way to villify large groups of people? What happens when the huge police force becomes bored doesn't have so many bad guys to chase?

Actually solving this would put ALOT of people out of work.

While we're at it the war on drugs is a joke. More people need to farking open their eyes and speak out against it. Billions and billions of our money wasted every farking year because of this farking bs.

Been working with heroin addicts 20 years, this is by far one of the most humane treatments arround. Can be maintainance, or detox. Really a great drug, it is both agonist and antagonist, so potential for abuse is low. This is what Rock Stars and Conservative Radio Hosts use to get clean.

The wave of the future, can be perscribed by "almost" any shrink.

Addicts have money? That's funny. The ones I know were too messed up to hold jobs. Any money they did manage to acquire was spent on more drugs.

Also, I think our tax money is most likely what is used for treatment centers in a lot of cases. Except for privately owned centers, of course. And most of those are too expensive for the middle-class addicts.

[tinfoil hat on] The US gov't and law enforcement everywhere likely hate this kind of thing. Kick a drug habit the painless and easy way?

1. You're suposed to suffer in rehab. Drug addiction is sinful, and redemption can only come at the glowing end of a torturer's hot poker, like the witches and heretics of old.
2. Narcotics addiction is a moral crime, not a disease. So a drug should not "cure" it. Only the religious zeal of conversion and righteously forswearing your old ways can help you find forgiveness for your sinful past.
3. Drug addicts fuel the procurement of new guns, cars and gadgets for the police, and the procurement of fun new oppressive powers for Attorneys-General and Justice Ministers everywhere.

Buprenex (sp?) as it is commonly called is by no means a "cure" for narcotic withdrawl. I worked in drug and alcohol dexox and rehab for some time and there is no "painless" detox. In fact patients who experienced the fewest and least intense withdrawl symptoms actuall relaspsed faster than those who suffered.

My theory is this:
To value your sobriety you have to pay for it, not in the monetary sense but in the metaphysical one. Narcotics prevent the patient from feeling, detox is the body chemestry trying to readjust itself to normal sensory input, you can't do that by continuing to consume substances that have the same neurological effect as the narcotics you were taking. Methadone has become just as big a drug as heroin because it does the same thing.

You have to pay for your sobriety to value it, sometimes a little suffering goes a long way. You can call me cruel or a dick of you want, but we kept our patients safe. No pateint ever died from withdrawl symptoms at my facility. I would tell pateints that there are two stages of withdrawl, "I'm afraid that I'm going to die" and "I'm afraid I'm NOT going to die."
