Good headline, submitter.

2005-03-31 05:18:05 PM
I have a 1999 C280, and I'm starting to have problem afer problem with it. I'll be getting a Japanese car soon.

2005-03-31 05:21:42 PM
I just bought an Acura over a Benz for that very reason. Come on, you bastards, what happened to making cars that were actually worth the insane price tag?

I guess merging with Chrysler infected Mercedes with the low-quality American car mentality.

2005-03-31 05:25:50 PM
Yup...I'm going to tarde in for a new RSX type S with about $5k in extras. I'm gonna be a ricer!

18 inch enkei wheels, cat-back exhaust, A-spec body kit, blah blah blah...

I'm excited about it.

Mercedes, for the most part, are still a helluva lot more fun than anything Japanese to drive. That's the tradeoff in buying most European cars. If someone doesn't appreciate the difference, that's perfectly fine--Japanese cars are the most reliable on the planet and make the most financial sense IF you don't value the driving experience as much.

I heard this mentality put best in a review: The BMW 5-series is a car you really, really want to drive. The Lexus LS430 is a car you really, really want to ride in.

2005-03-31 05:34:17 PM
While I agree with you on some levels, Nikolai, I just want a sportscar. Not a sports sedan, a real sportscar. I can't afford a german sportscar, so I have to look to the Japanese.

The new RSX has gotten rave reviews from the car mags as being a true "driver's car" and that's what I want. And it's damn nice inside, believe it or not.

----------

So did they also infect BMW and VW as well? Their cars have suffered for several years.

DrewFL

I was speaking generally, not directly to you--I really enjoy the RSX, almost as much as the Miata (and it's actually got usable space inside!). Those things are like street-legal luxury go-karts.

Mercedes doesn't even really serve this market, unless you count the little C-coupe. BMW will be bringing the 1-series (maybe it was the 2, I forgot) to the States in that same range. I saw one in London last year, looks like it might do well here. But right now, it seems like that sport compact market is mainly ignored by the Euro lux-makers.

Bareit
Funny thing is that it's like they met halfway. On the other side, Chrysler is now getting good reviews for the Mercedes influence.

That might be one of the best headlines I've read on FARK. Congratulations, submitter. Well done.

Had an E36 M3. Buying an S2000 soon. Had to sell the M3 due to poor-college-student reasons. I'd buy another M3 except I guess I just can't deal with the idea of spending money to buy something I already had once. Seems like time to move on, and I want a cabrio for the sunny CA weather.

S2000, hell of a sports car. Probably one of the rawest, most emotional cars the japanese have built in a long time... sweet! can't wait.

/no point.

I know more than one person who has had the dashboard in their Mercedes fall off. Yes, you read that right. They swore they'd never buy another Mercedes. One of them went to Lexus.

I'll start by pilin' on w/ the "Great headline" comments, by golly.

But seriously, the old Mercedes cars weren't any higher quality than the new ones -- it's just that American (and, to a lesser extentification -- I mean --Japanese) cars were lower quality back then than they is now, and whereas their quality has gone up in absolute terms, Mercedes' has been flat.

So Mercedes did a lot better vs. the average car then than now, but the absolute quality hasn't dropped off.

Oh, and due to more lax laws and -- but first things first. The -- These absence of Ralph Nader -- I think --they didn't have to recall stuff back then, so if frequency of recalls is bein' used as the standard, there will be a selectification bias.

/too latify to be thinkin' this hard

SlowTimedRapid: luck

Join the club. And yes, Japanese cars have come up a lot as of late, whereas Germany continues to solidly build their cars. It just looks like Germany's cars have fallen in quality.

US Cars are...making a comeback. Somebody realized that not every car needed a V8. Now we just have to follow suit in build quality. And looking at my friend's Focus...we've got a ways to go.
