No, seriously world, we are the most free and modern country you can find. I swear. Wait, where are you going...

Should be obvious. Indiana lacks artistic value.

Well, we've always known Indiana (outside of Indianopolis)was back asswards, this isn't much of a shock

2005-03-31 09:06:12 AM
Although I plan to move out of Indiana at my next opportunity, it does offer some amusement. I just love that "serious constitutional questions" can be raised by the wares purveyed by White River Truck Repair and Yard Art.

lovelaura: it can be pretty backwards inside Indianapolis, too.

Indiana: Where it isn't art unless it's dogs playing cards on velvet.

But Ken Falk, legal director for the Indiana Civil Liberties Union, said nudity has been part of art for hundreds of years...

Um, yeah. Probably three, four hundred years.

Evansville = skankiest nudie bars in the universe

just wait until the republicans get their way and their popular vision of morality can override the constitution

2005-03-31 11:37:11 AM
Well apparently the human body is horrible and disgusting. Thanks for the info, Indiana.

2005-03-31 11:42:53 AM
According to this schmuck, cultural education would be offensive. Looking at art and describing what you think is...uh...bad somehow.

Seeing something nude is offensive, eh? I bet this guy's a virgin.

I can feel my hand about to slap myself in utter disbelieve.

2005-03-31 11:43:37 AM
"They have nudity ... and that should not be in the view of a minor," he said.

Because, you know, kids bathe while fully clothed. Because ALL nudity is improper. Of course. It makes perfect sense.

2005-03-31 11:43:58 AM
The law also stipulates that such material is harmful for minors if, "considered as a whole, it lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors."

Sorry Michaelangelo, you just don't cut it as a serious artist. Especially for minors...who have NEVER seen those "things" before.

"Business told Venus di Milo and Michelangelo's David lack artistic value"

Yes, but did Venus of David listen to the business?

Venus or David
Damn I swear I even previewed before posting.

Pee-pees and wee-wees are bad, mkay.

Tell me again, why do we need to vigorously protect children from non-gratuitous nudity?

2005-03-31 11:59:53 AM
So according to the state of Indiana the Venus di Milo is ancient amputee porn? Cool.

2005-03-31 12:00:08 PM
Don't let the kids see naked people, but showing them killing is ok.

/free your sexuality

2005-03-31 12:04:02 PM
So the Taliban moved to Indiana!

2005-03-31 12:04:28 PM
you know, i used to have some faith in this county, but seeing things like this make me want to move. I'd like to think people have to the right to die in peace and the human body as being as viewed as nature and not something obscene.

this is supposed to protect the children, but what are we really teaching them with shiat like this? what are they supposed to think when they take a shower and look in the mirror?
thanks ashcroft

2005-03-31 12:04:32 PM
Alex Chilton

Because nudity warps our children's minds, and turns them into terrorists, of course.

2005-03-31 12:04:39 PM
*SNEER* The human body is disgusting! Even though God created all humans naked and we're all beautiful artworks of God, we need to cover up! Will someone please think of the children!

That is just completely farkin nuts.

2005-03-31 12:05:56 PM
I for one support this decision. Banning nudity is the only way to keep kids from getting pregnant at 13. We all know artists of any era are/were liberals bent on creating anarchy in society.
/bring back prohibition while your at it

2005-03-31 12:06:41 PM
What exactly are we protecting minors from? Things they already see every day?

Some guy in a parking lot stole my spot so I gave him the finger. Then he yelled at me about giving him the finger "in front of his kids."

Uhm, guess what? Your kids give each other the finger EVERYDAY. Starting in grammar school. Never mind the UFIA! Back in the 80's, you learned to swear in the second grade. I'm sure they've got that down to pre-K these days.

This extends to nudity as well. YOu can't hide a nudie magazine from a kid and they'll bring it into school because its instant cool points for the next 3 years. If kids have to get changed for gym, someone is getting their clothes stolen and thrown on top of the lockers (or hidden behind them).

2005-03-31 12:07:25 PM
Lots of little kids run around naked. Ergo, children are obscene. Add that to being completely bat-shiat insane and you've got quite a little treasure there.

"They have nudity ... and that should not be in the view of a minor," he said.
Indiana's obscenity law prohibits the display of nudity where children might see it, he said.
The law also stipulates that such material is harmful for minors if, "considered as a whole, it lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors."

Hey! We're trying to have a repressed, puritain society here! Get yir "art" out of our 17th-century Religious Zealot theme park!

2005-03-31 12:07:54 PM
Actually, do you really think a cast concrete imitation of ANYTHING is art? This is a place that sells concrete lawn decorations, you know. Like concrete geese, deer, and gnomes. Arguably, just that might make it obscene.

2005-03-31 12:08:37 PM
I realize that the zoning board in Indiana is far removed from the the federal government and not controlled by King Karl (Rove) and his minions. But this is one of hundreds of examples that highlight the grip that religious right wing fear mongers have over our country. They spread intollerance and fear under the guise of protecting the children and/or moral values. I hope the country finally see's how idiotic it is to have a party with such a mypoic view and votes at least one house of the legislature back to the Democrats in 2006. Rove and Co. have highjacked the Rebulican party that used to be for personal and fiscal repsonibility. They have done so by using moral values as a "McCarthyism" like tool. I am not a huge fan of the Democrats either, but some checks and balances are needed. If things don't change the Right Wing will get control of the courts and then things will get truley scary. Ideally, a new third party will emerge taking the centrist from both sides and putting the fundamentalists from both sides back on the fringes were they belong.

Shiat like this makes me embarrassed to be an American. Maybe 4 more years of crap like this will convince the rest of the lazy people out there to come out and vote our christian right government out of office.

That is...... If we are still allowed to vote in 4 years.

Think. A gray, cee-ment David is to Original David as a black velvet Mona Lisa is to the original Mona Lisa. Pretty tasteless. The Guardians of Art in Indiana are merely doing their job.....

2005-03-31 12:16:30 PM
Amen, practicalhippie!

As an art photographer, I'm extremely pissed at the direction of our country.

In retaliation, here are some of my favorite nude art photographers... and one link to my own:

Shadowscape - NSFW
Jeff Scott - NSFW
Bill Lemon - NSFW (awesome work!)
and mine
