But Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso said the find does not appear to be in any way related to terrorism.

So he's got that goin' for him... which is nice.

The scene where Bill eats the candy bar out of the pool is a classic scene. It's one of my vivid memories as a child.

Which explains why I'm so farked up. I blame Weird Al, Mad magazine, and Caddyshack.

They should send it to the UK, we got a good use for it.

Yep. If he would have been carrying 755 kg of explosives and ONE detonator, that would have been suspicious.

Where is there any reference to gophers in this story? I read it twice but didn't see anything about gophers. Am I missing something?

Police say they are still investigating why the man had the explosives, but it appears he may have been storing the material over the last 13 years while he worked as an explosives expert.

Because explosive experts never have explosives.

So do explosive experts transport their wares in their own cars? I'd hate to be in that Pinto. Do explosive use ammonium-nitrate? If not 1600 pounds of it sounds like a lot, unless he's also a farmer or a greens keeper? This gopher thing sounds more plausible.

I was talking with a guy a few weeks ago who believes that the intention of the Second Amendment is to allow citizens to keep any quantity of any type of weapon for any reason. Yes, including tons of high explosives, mortars, nuclear weapons, whatever.

I don't get what the problem is. I have lots of explosives. I am not going to blow anyone or anything up. Least not without permission and permits. There is nothing better than waking up, walking out to your back porch, detonating half a pound of black powder and then starting your day. The feeling of the concussion is quite an eye opener. Poor guy. Now he's in a bunch of trouble and he's done nothing wrong. Sad.

Minor thread-jack off topic, but since you mentioned the candy bar scene....

Every year we throw a Fear Factor Halloween party for our kids and a few local kids. This past last year we freaked-out the kids with a bowl full of "doody" .... little Baby Ruth bars in a gold fish bowl. We added a little paper to give the bowl of doody that special visual effect.

After soaking for 30 minutes, the doody bar bowl looked truely disgusting. After one kid finally took the challange and proudly announced - "it's candy bars" - all the other kids quicky gobbled up all the "doody bars" ... which made the adults wretch.

Good times.

Hmm... why is it illegal to OWN explosives? Who is the victim? And don't give me that "well he COULD hurt someone with it" crap. That kind of thinking justifies all sorts of ridiculous laws.

Normal: Blowing stuff up is illegal
Soon: Owning explosives is illegal
Then: Owning things which make explosives is illegal
Finally: Learning about explosives is illegal

Just like

Normal: Killing someone is illegal
Soon: Owning guns is illegal
Then: Owning gun parts is illegal
Finally: Learning about guns or gun parts is illegal

what probably was the problem was the way he was storing them.

2005-03-31 09:53:27 AM
mr lawson

you are most likely right. you should see some of the regs that i have to follow to store my compleated pyrotechnic shells. (big fireworks) it is getting to the point that the fun in the hobby is going away.

nice headline.

I's tells you what you could have a heck of a 4th with that kinda setup.
Now days it is a big pain in the ass to get explosives or make explosives for actual legal farm use. Heck the government usto tell you how to make stuff.
Oh well, guess you need a good level of restriction on that kind of thing, just not so restrictive that it stops productivity. Oh the good ol' days. When you could pick a few stick and some caps up at the hardware store.

jmacshriver, you make big shells? Nice.

2005-03-31 01:35:47 PM
yes it is fun. my club mostly makes 4 and 5 inchers. the 6, 8, and 12 inchers, just take too much stars, lift, and flash to fill. when it takes a month of thursdays to make the stars to fill five 4 inch shells, it is not worth it to do the really big stuff. All year we make the stuff, and then it takes thirty minutes and a permit to watch it all go up in a bright display. You know in the movies when stuff explodes in a great big fireball with lots of smoke. that is pretty easy to make with stuff you can still buy locally. but if i told you i would have to watch out for the ATF-E
