Police have been caught manipulating lights to generate tickets. There was a midblock signal for a garage and/or crosswalk. Police would open up the controller box and make the signal go red as a car reached it.

Some companies running red light cameras required that the signals have short yellow phases. Making the yellow longer by a second or two permanently reduces red light violations by 50-95% because most violations are caused by drivers who misjudge the yellow duration or are unable to stop in time. So the companies protected their revenue stream by forbidding reducing violations instead of punishing them. (This was more of a problem five years ago than today.)

"We will be charging him with attempted murder and malicious damage to property,"

To say the least. This is terrorism-level behavior IMO.

Interesting. It seems that in theory, the length of a yellow light should be proportional to speed limit, whereas the length of the interval between one side turning red and the other turning green should be proportional to the size of the intersection. There's a couple intersections in my area that now have red-light cameras, and they were chosen because they were the worst in terms of accidents due to running the light. I've checked them out and it stays yellow a looong time. I think there's more to it than what you describe. People seem to just go as long as it's yellow, and start to slow down when it's red, resulting in at least a couple cars running the light each time. The fine is $100, which I don't think is the answer. That's like saying you're allowed to do something that might kill someone if you pay the court $100. I'd rather see license suspensions or even probation/jail for repeat offenders.

Most drivers will stop at a yellow given enough time.

The time and area where one cannot safely stop in time, but must proceed through a yellow or red, is called the "dilemma zone" in traffic engineering lingo.

Most signal timing plans have an all-red clearance interval such that if your car enters the intersection as the light turns red, it will pass through before the other light turns green.

iollow is a nazi and doesn't understand the basic principles of traffic engineering. The tow truck driver should go to jail for a very, very long time...

In addition, I should add (on a seperate note) that red light cameras DO NOT reduce accidents, and in many cases actually increase them.

It's intuitive, really. The accident rate for sideswipes and T-bones goes down (less people running the light), but the accident rate for rear-enders shoots way up (more people jamming on their brakes).

The safest way to re-time a dangerous intersection is to leave the yellow phase constant and extend the all-red phase a second or two.

Well, I don't have it cached it seems, but the article said that somewhere in africa (it named the place, I forgot), a towtruck driver and two kids were spotted by neighbors messing with the traffic light and were arrested. The cops don't know how long he had been doing this, so they don't know if he caused any actual accidents.

2005-03-29 02:00:51 PM
So when a city changes light timing to increase revenue, it's somehow OK? How is that any different in principle that what the tow truck driver was doing in that long-farked article?

Hooray for cops catching evildoers and all that, but fark the pigs who go along with this kind of crap.

The article in all its goodness...

Traffic lights rigged to cause crashes

[World News] JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 28 : A Johannesburg tow truck driver has confessed to rigging traffic lights to create accidents and generate business, the BBC reported Monday.

The unidentified man was arrested after residents called police to report he and two children were tampering with the lights. The intersection has had a higher than usual number of accidents in recent months, the report said.

"We will be charging him with attempted murder and malicious damage to property," said police spokeswoman Sergeant Katlego Mogale."We don't know how long he has being doing this and how many accidents he might have caused."

In addition, Johannesburg Roads Agency chief Mavela Dlamini said the agency would sue the culprits if it could be proved any accidents or deaths had resulted from their tampering.

but i have seen these all red intersections where you have a car coming up and anticipating the green light only to either jam on the brakes or to go right through the red/almost green light. Great fun to watch though.

but you have to love the extra large stop signs for the elderly. and of course the 2 way to the new 4 way stop added for the elderly people that seem to forget to stop in the first place, allowing the cross traffic to not get t-boned.
everybody knows a town that has been converted in this way.

theeagle, on that note, old people shouldn't drive.

For some reason, I was driving along and this old person would brake, almost stop whenever he saw something intersect the road. It could have been a designated crosswalk area (no stop sign or anything) or a green light. It really annoyed me yet the car full of us just laughed (LOL'ed, if you will) because it happened every five seconds.

There is an intersection in our town which has a very long left turn distance to travel. I have started through the intersection on green, the light turns yellow and then red right away as I am still making the turn.

Then the oncoming traffic starts barreling at me at 60mph (in my fevered state it seems like that).

I now count how many cars are waiting ahead of me at that light. If I am five cars or more behind the front car, I simply count on stopping anyway and waiting through another light.

Seems to me that the light for the oncoming traffic could stay red five to seven seconds after my light turns red and it would be a LOT safer and not nearly so adrenalin-producing.

I just came back from the San Francisco area, and they don't have that there. It was very disconcerting; every intersection seemed like a tbone waiting to happen.

First I was green with envy that I didn't think of such a ploy. Then realizing my error, I turned a a shade of yellow in sickness and shame. Now all I see is red as I demand justice for his crimes.

/tryin too hard
