Why would any company give preferential to a company they own?

2005-03-29 04:50:31 AM
Umm...

Fark the Yankees. That is all.

Who cares about this?

Why are the Yankees and BoSox playing the first game and not the Reds.

If it were just Richard or Johnson, it would be a double entendre. However, when you have the two together, it's more like a quadruple entendre.

And supposing he was Richard Peter Johnson, well, that creates levels of entendreness that I can't even begin to comprehend!

The insider explained, "The better the Yankees do financially, the more money they'll have to pay the best players, and the more the Yankees will beat the Red Sox.

Nice to see insiders admitting the whole thing is fixed.

And yet, people still watch. Sad, really.

2005-03-29 05:43:28 AM
DOH!

Of course considering johnson is also the name of a grass, a disease, a noise...well that complicates things even more.

Call it a poly entendre and be done with it.

Sorry mods, not threadjacking, really.

Stepped in it again didn't I? :-)

Have you heard about the plan to have them shake hands before the first game. Of course you have, it was linked on Fark. Still seems like a stupid idea to me.

The guy who wrote the new book abaout Harvard's Larry Summers changed his name from "Richard Blow" because, as he said, somebody always makes a comment.

Richard Peter John Thomas Tallywhacker Johnson, now there's a name!

Yankees suck. Always will.

Maybe it's just me (and I'm not an avid sports fan, or an american) and maybe I'm just not in the know. But I find it weird that the "New York" Times is part owner of the "Boston" Red Socks... What there aren't enough teams in New York to invest in?

Oh boy everyone can biatch about the Yankees and hope Jeter gets cancer, etc. Doesn't it ever get old? I thought being a baseball fan meant rooting for a team, not childishly hating another.

I actually own that exact kind of chess set, except that it's Yankees vs Mets, not Yankees vs Red Sox.

/Told you I was an extreme Yankees fan ;)

My two young sons like to play chess, so I almost sprung for the Subway Series set myself.

I won't have this Bosox version on my table...

Why don't they work on NOT ruining baseball? The Sox and Yanks are the two best teams in baseball almost every year, how boring is that?

In the so-called "Golden Age" of Baseball, around and through the decade of the 50's, from 1949 to 1964 the Yankees were in the World Series all but two years (1954, 1959). Those times certainly weren't boring.

Also, considering how the past four years have gone for underdogs (Diamondbacks, Angels, Marlins, Boston), I'd say things were as exciting as ever.

2005-03-29 09:27:30 AM
yeah, too bad the yanks have lost 4 straight to boston. anyway, here's the problem with this whole argument: the yankees made a sizable profit last year, and backed off of carlos beltran. they already have the money to spend on "better players" (70m to wright and pavano this offseason, plus giving up a ton of money in the randy johnson deal) and they aren't spending to their max potential. a new stadium won't fix that.

DoomsDay - In simple terms here is the deal as I understand it. The parent company of the times bought the Boston Globe (a newspaper0. A group of investors, including the media group that owns both paper, invested in the Red Sox when they were sold a few years ago.

The allegations are a little silly though, if only because it is the Times that now owns the Globe (the Boston paper), so if anything one would think it might work the other way around.

P.S. I love being a Red Sox fan in NY.

I love the smell of Yankee paranoia in the morning.

2005-03-29 11:14:37 AM
What isn't silly (and pretty much the only part of the article worth discussing) is that the Times continues its practice of bashing all new stadium plans in the five boroughs (see: Jets west side stadium project) without ever publicizing its own sweetheart deal for its own building across the street from Port Authority.

"How dare the city of New York use public funding for sports complexes! It's a travesty!" - Times
"What about your own tax breaks on your land for your spankin' new building?" - anyone w/a brain
"Uhhh, no comment." - Times

go yanks.
