Wasn't there once another famous Austrian besides the Governator who though sterilization and selective breeding to improve the race was a good idea?
2005-03-28 12:57:58 PM
did you just Goodwin the thread in the Weeners?
2005-03-28 01:03:28 PM
ha! filtered damnit... and it is even pertinent to the thread.

This article is full of incorrect information. They state that vasectomies are irreversible yet this isn't true. I know two friends that have had their vasectomies reversed. Then there is the huge jumps in logic this article forces on you, and the bias that is behind it. All together I give two thumbs down to this and take ten points from the submitters profile to be redistributed at my leisure.
2005-03-29 09:55:14 AM
Now if only we could get all the people on welfare to undergo this procedure...
2005-03-29 09:56:04 AM
Vasectomies are not always reversible - if there's any 'leakage', some sperm can get into the bloodstream, at which point they're attacked as foreign invaders, and antibodies are manufactured against them. Those antibodies stay in your bloodstream, and prevent you from making more sperm.
However, we're talking 99% reversible here.

Such semen samples are frozen in liquid nitrogen below -300F (-185F)

Make up your mind already!
2005-03-29 09:57:04 AM
Okay, that's positively insane. Oh wait, this is California.

The physicians' job, as professor M. Sullivan from the University of Washington said, is "to focus on patients' lives rather than patients' bodies"

I think, instead, they need to focus on the fact that the two are quite related.
2005-03-29 09:57:12 AM
I concur.

I wouldn't expect to see a line stating that persons of size are "deemed genetically inferior to the normalized median of homo sapien development" in a medical journal.

But I don't read medical journals so what do I know

Eugenics was practiced in America too in the first half of the 20th century. Vermont was embarrassed a few years ago when old records were published.
2005-03-29 09:57:49 AM
Scary indeed! I certainly think we need to find a way to fight obesity in our country. But this sounds way to much like selective breeding to me. If we are going to sterilize all the fatties, why not sterilize anyone with a low IQ as well?
2005-03-29 09:58:21 AM
True that--spigi

Darwin will do its magic
2005-03-29 09:58:52 AM
Fat people have sex?
2005-03-29 09:59:16 AM
By offering such a highly effective form of birth control freely to men who, by clinical diagnosis, have been deemed genetically inferior to the normalized median of homo sapien development, such a gene line would effectively be eliminated.

Sweet idea. Deliciously evil, but sweet nonetheless.
2005-03-29 09:59:29 AM

I believe that most vasectomies aren't designed to be reversible. It may be possible to reverse them in many cases, but it is nowhere near guaranteed--and in the case of a reversed vasectomy, your immune system still fights and tries to eliminate your sperm.
2005-03-29 09:59:44 AM
Nice little Eugenics program they have there. Mengele would be so proud.

THIS vasectomy IS NOT reversable.. Read the article.. THey don't do the normal cut here, but remove more of the vas-defs. There isn't enough left to revese the proceedure.
2005-03-29 10:00:21 AM
Zena:: If we are going to sterilize all the fatties, why not sterilize anyone with a low IQ as well?

I'm intrigued by your ideas, and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Who has sex with an obese person?
2005-03-29 10:01:07 AM
I doubt genetics has much to do with the obesity issue as much as actual lifestyles do. If people live better they'll be thinner, simple as that.
2005-03-29 10:01:23 AM
I can't put my concern into words....I swear I keep thinking that these people can't exist....Maybe if I just think hard enough they will all go away....Oh please let this just be a dream.
2005-03-29 10:01:43 AM

Vasectomies are not always reversible - if there's any 'leakage', some sperm can get into the bloodstream, at which point they're attacked as foreign invaders, and antibodies are manufactured against them.

My understanding was that in all vasectomy cases, the sperm become targets of the immune system. Is that not the case?
2005-03-29 10:01:48 AM
Obese people don't get laid anyhow.
2005-03-29 10:02:38 AM
Here's an easier method:

2005-03-29 10:02:42 AM
Imagine in 50 years a race of geneticaly superior skinny people who have a Tsunami weapon. The U.S. will be UNSTOPABLE!
2005-03-29 10:02:57 AM
HERO tag.

Eugenics gets such a bad name sometimes.
2005-03-29 10:03:14 AM
Not a bad idea, huh? However, I don't want to be the one implementing the program. What if I don't make the cut-off?
2005-03-29 10:03:15 AM
Fat people have sex?

Where do you think all of these earthquakes are coming from?

By the way, can we sterilize the pathological liars next?
2005-03-29 10:03:27 AM
2005-03-29 10:03:46 AM
That's horrible!

ACLU in 5...4...3...
2005-03-29 10:03:55 AM
I believe this article is a hoax or a joke. While I understand the need for a genetic shift due to the changing environment, I can't believe that obesity would be the first target. There are many more serious genetic defects that should be weeded out first.
2005-03-29 10:03:56 AM
After the sterilization, we can put the fatties in work camps to free them from their obesity. With a lean diet and a strenuous work schedule, they could be made thin. We could put up a sign over the entrance, "Work will set you free".
2005-03-29 10:03:58 AM
If we are going to sterilize all the fatties, why not sterilize anyone with a low IQ as well?

Ever been to Walmart? There is a pretty strong overlap between those two groups.
2005-03-29 10:04:01 AM
Uh you can't compare to the goose-steppers...this is still voluntary.

Persons Of Size?!?!

Oh man that's the first non-photoshop comment to make me laugh out loud.
2005-03-29 10:04:02 AM
Some vasectomies are reversible, but it's a biatch of an operation to do it. C. Everett Koop, the old Surgeon General, used to do vasectomy reversals, and he described the operation as "trying to knit two mushy strands of spaghetti at the bottom of an ice cream cone together...with chopsticks."
2005-03-29 10:04:03 AM
And continue that reasoning to people who leave their cellphones on in theater and restaurants. And the list could expand to cover many bases.

Speeding ticket? snip

Farting? clip

Looking at me crossways? chop
2005-03-29 10:04:09 AM
Uh, could someone remind me when eugenics became an acceptable practice again?

Hell, if we're gonna slide down this slope, there are a great number of traits worse than obesity I'd like to see "eliminated from the gene pool"...
2005-03-29 10:04:15 AM
This thread Godwin'd itself. This is scary indeed. Terms like "genetically inferior" when used in modern day America should send red flags up.
2005-03-29 10:04:39 AM
On secod thought it is a good way to stop stupid people from breeding...I mean you have to sign up for the program.
2005-03-29 10:05:39 AM
This is a great idea. Its not like its forced on them or anything, its simply free of charge. Personally, I think we should offer EVERYONE free sterilization. Lots of people complain about population control and yet few want to embrace the obvious answer of simply having less children. It being free is essential, since it would be poorer communities that benefit the most.
2005-03-29 10:05:42 AM
If I remember correctly, obesity is defined as being more than 30% overweight. I think it'd be better for the gene pool if the vasectomies were offered to people with IQs which are more than 30% below average. Coupled with some sweet $700-$3000 Rim Diddys.
2005-03-29 10:05:51 AM
Scary yes. Effective? No.

A. Obesity is arguably caused by social factors, not just genetic.

B. People get fatter as they get older. How many of these obese men seeking vasectomies would have already sowed their seed?

C. And, to echo Tjack and probably hundreds more to comment: Fat people have sex?
2005-03-29 10:05:57 AM
perfect! here's a canidate.

Again, I believe this article is a hoax or a joke.

It's a little early, but April fool's day is almost here.
2005-03-29 10:06:10 AM
This has to be a conspiracy against those overweight hilbilly twins on mini-motorcycles.
2005-03-29 10:06:14 AM
yikes guys.. at least they didnt do something scarier like sew womans vaginas shut.
2005-03-29 10:07:53 AM
I'm pretty sure it's an April Fool's joke as well, particularly given the last few paragraphs, like the "faucets" that can be turned on or off, so people can get "permission" to procreate when they're thin enough.

Farewell fatties! Your days are numbered.
/like genetics were the sole sorce of the problem
