You know, we effectively conquered these guys during the Mexican-American War. I mean, we took Mexico City. Three quarters of Mexico is north of Mexico City. After that you're mopping up. Why didn't we keep it and make it a territory? We'd all have been better off-the Mexicans and us.

Jimbo the Slightly Impressive
Our chances are very very good of being at least invited to the World Cup. As of March 23, the current rankings from FIFA (which will get bashed, but that's another story entirely):

1 (1) Brazil 836
2 (2) France 782
3 (3) Argentina 777
4 (4) Czech R. 774
5 (5) Spain 759
6 (6) Mexico 752
7 (6) Netherlands 750
8 (8) England 746
9 (9) Portugal 740
10 (10) Italy 736
10 (11) USA 736

As you can see, the States are tied for tenth which, as long as we don't suffer some unimaginable collapse over the next year, will be more than enough.

I'm not sure how they determine the numbers, however, because Germany was in the finals of the last World Cup, France got their asses hammered in group play, by some shiatty southern African country no less, the US waxed Mexico 2-0 in the last World Cup, etc.

I think we're still two World Cups away from making it to the grand finale -- Freddy Adu will be the preeminent player in the world by that time (which will make him, what, 23? 24? heh.), but a loss in pre-tournament play won't be that big of a deal, and I'm very confident in our retaking the lead of CONCACAF before the big dance.

Also: The U.S. team was coming off a 16-game unbeaten streak. We're not a superpower yet, like Brazil, or Germany, but we're on the way.

Puto4Life
Classy, assbandit. Tell us when you make the World Cup, kthx?

"Shakespeare's parents and grandparents probably complained that he had poor English. Adam and Eve also probably complained that Cain and Abel didn't speak good....what did they speak?"

Are you trying to justify the all very frequent mis(use) of 'I could care less' when the point trying to be made is the exact opposite, in that they actually 'COULDN'T care less'?

Shakespeare 'could spin in his grave less'.

Dunno about Adam and Eve and their Menendez boys; weren't they too busy trying to populate the earth with each other?

Hey beammeupscotty,

You forgot to mention some other guys on your thank list.
Bill Clinton all the way to the first George. George Washington that is.
I guess if Kerry was elected everything would be great. The sun would always shine, the temp. would be a constant 70 degrees, flowers would bloom, aids cured, every homeless person would be given a house, world peace, dogs loving cats, cats filling bird feeders, hitler never born, etc.
Damn,I wish I voted for Kerry.

The quality of a country's soccer team is inversely proportional to that country's relevance in the world.

Everyone hates the US until it's time to put their hand out. Plenty of rabid anti-american bile about what cheapskates we were with Tsunami relief, but at the end of the day, where American gave more money than the rest of the world combined through Public and Private donations? Didn't see a lot of 'oh, well, um, thanks America' articles.

In the last 25 years America has viciously invaded several counties and installed democratic governments. We've enfranchised peasants, provided food relief, and brought freedom to millions. The world wrung its hands at the evil perpetrated by the Taliban against its own people and the cruelty inflicted on women there, but America did something about it. I'll just bet those women hate America as much as you.

Quite a few Americans died bringing food to Somalia, but I didn't notice any extra oil packages in the mail.

Quite a few Americans died restoring peace to the Balkans when Europe was too impotent to do anything to stop the thousands being raped and massacred in waves of ethnic cleansing right on the doorstep of the enlightened Europeans. Hmm, didn't get my oil shipment for that one either.

We don't have to talk about World War II at all, just events that have happened in the last 20 years.

We're assholes for invading Iraq and bringing Democracy, stopping the wholesale extermination of the Kurds, while ruling that captured American pilots who were severely beaten and tortured at Abu Grabe prison are entitled to no compensation, while prisoners of war who showed their peepees are entitled to millions of compensation. The great thing is even those Iraqis who showed their peepees while raping captured American females will get a nice fat check.

War for oil? Why don't you stick your tired leftist slogan up your ass. In case you haven't noticed, the only folks profiting from oil are the Iraqis. I won't even go into how America ate Iraq's former debt so as not to saddle the new government with financial burdens.

Yeah, we're real cocksuckers alright.

Germany used their power to start two World Wars.

France used its power to turn Africa into a Colonial nightmare.

China used its power to run students over with tanks and execute dissidents in Tibet.

Japan used its power to turn consumer culture and bizarre fetishes into an art form.

I suppose America should be more like the other countries. Y'all would be a lot happier and we'd be a lot richer.

GungFu:

"Are you trying to justify the all very frequent mis(use) of 'I could care less' when the point trying to be made is the exact opposite, in that they actually 'COULDN'T care less'?"

Nah, just pointing out that languages are organic and evolving. Parents will always complain about the younger generation(s) misuse of language. Eventually, the changes become acceptable and a "new" older generation complains about how the "new" younger generation mangles the language, and on an on. Thus, we are not speaking Shakespearian (sp?) English anymore.

budboomer:

"You forgot to mention some other guys on your thank list.
Bill Clinton all the way to the first George. George Washington that is."

I agree with you that every president has made mistakes that have alienated others abroad. This president, however, has taken it to new heights (or should I say lows). He doesn't even try to conceal his arrogance and patronizing to other leaders/countries.

"I guess if Kerry was elected everything would be great. The sun would always shine, the temp. would be a constant 70 degrees, flowers would bloom, aids cured, every homeless person would be given a house, world peace, dogs loving cats, cats filling bird feeders, hitler never born, etc.
Damn,I wish I voted for Kerry. "

I know you'll probably rip into me for this, but I didn't vote for Kerry, so much as against Bush. Kerry would have been in big-business's pockets as much as Bush is, no doubt. However, I believe he has more diplomatic skills and just is a more intelligent person overall. Bush just scares the living shiat out of me. And while living abroad for the past two years, I've only met one ex-pat who actually supported Bush, and he was only short term over here.

I don't blame you for being mad - I'd be mad too if I sucked at every international sport.

I also don't blame America for sucking at soccer (football!).

I do, however, blame them for sucking at basketball. HA!

Everyone, you all gotta stop crying like little babies about what was said. Maybe we should get the FCC to censor fans at sporting events. Give me a break. Look at it this way, they're just exercising their first amendment right, whether you like it or not (and whether they have it or not). Stop being such hypocrites, let it go. People can say what they want when they want to, regardles of whether your feelings are hurt or not.

let.. it.. go, people. the end.

As an expat for two years, I avoid political discussions at all cost, because if I actually SAID I was pro-Bush, the other expats would ostracise me. And I value my social contacts, because there ain't that many around these parts.

I've never gotten a hard time from being an American. I like to think it's because foreigners can make a distinction between people and their government. Heck, some of my best friends are French. But hey, if you're determined to see antiamericanism, I'm sure you'll find it if you look hard enough.

"As an expat for two years, I avoid political discussions at all cost, because if I actually SAID I was pro-Bush, the other expats would ostracise me. And I value my social contacts, because there ain't that many around these parts."

I think you underestimate your "contacts". You might have some lively, and even heated debates, but I think most expats would be more tolerant of your opinions. Granted we do tend to be more liberal, but we also tend to realize that diversity exists in this world, and that includes conservatives.

"I've never gotten a hard time from being an American. I like to think it's because foreigners can make a distinction between people and their government. Heck, some of my best friends are French. But hey, if you're determined to see antiamericanism, I'm sure you'll find it if you look hard enough."

You're lucky. While having not been discriminated against for being an American specifically, I have been for being a foreigner. It sucks. I agree that most people distinguish between Americans and our gov't. Unfortunately, the course of action our government is taking in our name is deplorable and causing untold problems for years to come with people and countries abroad.

I don't generally encounter anti-Americanism, either, rather anti-American policy-ism. And I tend to agree when it comes to our foreign policy.

Just my 2 yen.

Must have been the first football game the reporter went to.
You have to face this kind of jokes in every game. Just go into a block of the wild crowd and take a look around. Nobody you could argue with, no matter which country.

Btw, since the US display such an arrogance in every means, (in this case the NAFTA, the pseudo-free trading area), people will try everything to provoke. And look at those blokes once and you will understand that there are no moral boundaries in action.

And since everyone between Baja California and Tierra del Fuego feels being treated as America's Backyard, why the fark are you surprised?

CONSDUBYA: " Well, if the US were to disallow illigal immigrants from Mexico, your agriculture industy would collapse at worst, and produce would become much much more expensive at best.

Oh, and in Soccer, due to the games *ahem* "slow paced nature", fans abusing each other and riling each other up is all part of it. It is how they entertain themselves. Soccer is also a passionate sport where much gets said but not meant. Mexico is firmly Catholic as far as i know, I dont think they are actually going to work with Osama. Of course the choice of chanting "osama" as the way to give the opposing team shiat is based in current affairs and every nation on earth being pissed off at the US."

I find your posts quite interesting. You always have such profound and insightful comments. You rarely fail to miss a chance for some good old fashioned U.S. bashing. You rant against blind nationalism, yet your comments are, without exception, fanatically anti U.S. Funny, most of my produce is either U.S. grown or comes from Central America (which excludes Mexico), South America, or Asia. Mexico is predominantly Catholic (the rest, Evangelical). I've spent a great deal of time in Honduras (also Catholic with some Evangelicals). The papers frequently had reports of Al Qaeda operatives (really just gang punks who signed up with the wrong guys) being arrested by the police...Hmmmm... As far as the rest of the world hating the States; yeah, a lot of people do. A lot of people don't. Maybe you should be glad that your overgrown sandbox isn't an Imperial Japanese province and do something constructive with your life. A builder or a destroyer...the choice is yours. I, for one, choose to move ahead and simply do what I can each day for those who can't do for themselves.

"Osama, oh-oh-oh-oh
Osama, oh-oh-oh-oh
He supports the Arsenal
He's hiding in Kabul"

Whoever was talking about what Germans must get said about them at football games - listen to this from Holland's star striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in the build-up to the last time the two of them played at Euro 2004:

"This is not just about football history, it is about real history and what went on 60 years ago."

The match then featured the dutch fans chanting such gems as "grandad wants his bicycle back" and other references to the war. If anyone is surprised that fans have taken an international football match as a platform to make crude insults at the expense of their rivals, they should probably open their eyes more often.

Bears repeating. I think he's being a bit pissy, but really. What when on (if it did go on, and most people on here that watched the match say it didn't) was rude, sure, but take a second to think about it. Pleeeeease.

It seems a lot of foreigners here want the US to return to a 1930s-style foreign policy.

If we have to be always considerate of (fill in the blank) sensitivities, it makes sense that a certain percentage of Americans are thin-skinned, as well.

Those who dislike America will always find a reason to dislike it.
