Again I maintain that there is no cause for worry here. Our society will always have a need for the uneducated, as our janitors, garbage collectors, ditch diggers and so on. If a certain region of the country persists in turning out such people, then we are forever ensured of having a domestic pool of step 'n fetchit types, rather than having to import them from overseas. We'll provide them with dirty, dangerous minimum wage jobs and a steady supply of fast food to keep them dying young, and they'll supply us with warm bodies willing to do the tasks that we are not. It's win/win, and the best part is that they did it to themselves.

While it is obviously IMAX's right to choose the movies they show based on the intelligence of their audience, as far as that audience is concerned, I have to question why a person would watch a movie that offends them. Fundies almost seem to enjoy being offended if it gives them an opportunity to complain.

Actually, I disagree. Most people do seem to believe in fairy tales, if your "most" people link is to be believed. To be frank, I think it is much more plausible that life evolved without supernatural assistance, rather than believe in some omnipotent being whose existance can never be definitively proven. Honestly, the idea of an alien civilization seeding the galazy with genetic material is more plausible than the idea of an omnipotent god.

Do I think that Darwinian evolutionary theory is perfect? Of course not. However, I do think it is the best explanation currently available. It is a scientific theory, and as such it can be a) experimentally demonstrated in controlled environments (i.e. the lab) over a given time period, and b) observed to occur in uncontrolled environments (i.e. the outside world) over a given time period. By extrapolation, if evolutionary processes are seen to take place over relatively short time periods (i.e. microevolution), then one can reasonably deduce that they have taken place all through natural history (i.e. macroevolution).

Pointing to a book that started out as an oral history of a nomadic tribe, was transcribed by several different men over the millennia, edited by committee some 1,500 years ago, and then translated several times does not, in my mind, in any way, shape, or form amount to a scientific theory. As such, it should not be taught in science classes, and it should not be featured in science museums.

Also, need I remind you that public opinion is not exatly a valid argument, insofar as a depressing majority of people in this country can barely point out a place as well known as Iraq on a map?

A girl I know who's a creationist (scary I know) explained it like this: If evolution is real, it means adam & eve isn't real, hence no original sin. Without original sin, what's the point of religion?
To many, Evolution "negates" religion (even though the Pope did say Evolution is OK). Unfortunately "science" and "facts" proving evolution aren't enough to convince someone if they fear their entire belief structure is being threatened.

Did't you know? Most evangelical fundamentalists view the Pope as wrongheaded at best, the antichrist at worst.

Besides, Catholics really aren't the problem here. Everyone in my Irish and Italian Catholic family, including my uncle the priest, has no problem with evolution (although my mother doesn't like my atheism/agnosticism). Same with every other Catholic I know. The problem lies with the biblical literalists who seem to becoming more and more powerful in this country these days.

I remember when I got my MIP I had to go into a program with a bunch of alcoholics and drunk drivers, and I got into an argument with a large group of them about creationism versus evolution. I absolutely smoked them by bringing up the fact that viruses evolve right before our eyes. Of course none of them were educated enough to bring out the other flawed argument of macro versus micro, so I didn't need to bring up the subject of the tailbone or human embryos forming tails in the womb.

I was amused/made uncomfortable by my fundamentalist christian fam's reaction to one of the exhibits at a museum we went to. They automatically went into 'holier-than-thou' speak prattling off to no one in particular about the inacuracies of the geologic timelines presented and such.

they aren't mutually exclusive, folks. They only are when you have the belief that the ye old Bible was originally written by the hand of god (through individuals, of course) and that it has never undergone any subjective translations or alterations that may have sullied the original content...

and we all know how likely THAT would be.

Too bad NOBODY is saying that the theatres should be *forced* to show the films. Idiotic business practices that hurt no one should not be illegal, but that doesn't mean we can't criticize them.
