This is a big reason many people oppose National ID cards. What starts out as an identification card turns into an authorization card. The list of people who can de-authorize it and the reasons they can use grows and grows. Many local governments now routinely suspend drivers licenses to collect library fines, child support and a variety of other things that have nothing to do with driving. Even though it's a punishment there's usually no judge involved, just everyday clerks who may have simply screwed up. Read the top post by DarthBrooks for a good example.

Ten years from now, if you have any lost library books, disputed IRS claims or unpaid parking tickets, good luck getting on a plane or applying for a job. When they scan your electronic National ID card and find that it's been "flagged" for some reason, company policy will say not to give you the time of day.

Le Petomane:
Nothing intrusive that Arlington does surprises me. We're talking about one of the only places I've ever been where cars actually stop at crosswalks to look for pedestrians, because everyone's afraid of getting ticketed for failing to yield to a ped who has started to cross.

and this is a bad idea why?

/exercises nightly on the streets of Arlington
//if I had a dollar for every donkey who almost runs me over at Key Bridge & Spout Run Parkway...
///and it's not like I cross at granny-speed

It's true though, Arlington is becoming very anti-car. I applaud the walking iniatives.

Amen SatanLvsU2

I have lived in Arlington for 15 years, my wife was raised there. Gov't has more than enough money, and keeps trying to get more and more. At the rate they are going I figure I will be forced out due to taxes in a few more years.

/Arlington is anti-car cuz most of the people drive BIG SUV's
//very pro "affordable housing" too
///as long as "affordable" is about $100k and NIMBY
