2002-03-21 04:48:48 PM
Sounds like the Ministry of Finance has been hitting the shrooms again.

2002-03-21 04:48:50 PM

Had a bad feeling there'd be a Domo-Kun in here. By the way, who the hell's gonna be too scared to forge money because there's a monster on there?

2002-03-21 04:51:40 PM
"We're hoping the monsters will frighten people away from trying to forge documents," a Sakaiminato official said.

oh no theres a pokemon on the bill we better run and hide!

2002-03-21 04:51:40 PM
try to scare people away from forging documents by putting a cartoon monster on them??

works for me :)

2002-03-21 04:51:42 PM
"Hey, Billy, let's go forge some official documents!!"
"Better not, Johnny. Did you see those monsters in the header?"

(I picked the names myself. I know they're not traditional authentic Japanese names. Screw you.)

2002-03-21 04:54:46 PM
Makes you wonder if they're going to go the schgirls and tentacle monsters route..

2002-03-21 04:55:25 PM
"We're hoping the monsters will frighten people away from trying to forge documents,"

What?!?!

Is the fear of cartoon monsters that great in Japan?
Could the US have just dropped leaflets of cartoon monsters on Japan during WWII and won?

I still don't understand.

"We're hoping the monsters will frighten people away from trying to forge documents,"

What?!?!

2002-03-21 04:56:19 PM
I draw stick figures on all my important documents. Seems to work, no one's forged my list of stupid things to call birds, or anything.

2002-03-21 04:57:28 PM
Great Idea! We should adopt a similar policy and have an image of George Washington being tentacle raped on all one-dollar bills.

2002-03-21 04:58:34 PM
This is what they most likely mean

go3
2002-03-21 04:58:39 PM
These pepple have weathered two nukes and every incarnation of Godzilla possible.

I don't think some paper monsters are going to scare them.

2002-03-21 04:58:53 PM
IT WILL BANISH DIRT TO THE LAND OF WIND AND GHOSTS

2002-03-21 05:02:22 PM

I want a Force Five figure on my documents, not something crappy like DragonBall Z

Any one else remember Force Five or Starblazers ? Those were the Anime !

It worked when I tried it in my brower.
Sorry, everybody...

So the key to keeping private documents secure is to turn them into collector's items?

2002-03-21 05:23:00 PM
One can only hope that Mainichi Shimbun was trying to be ironic.

2002-03-21 05:26:24 PM
they have a straaaange sense of humor over there in japan.

i like it.

2002-03-21 05:35:52 PM
Hahahaha.

What the hell.

2002-03-21 05:38:58 PM

( hope this works )

if you're having troubles with HTML and ASCII art, replace spaces with  &59;

that's (ampersand)nbsp(semicolon)

it looks like this:

2002-03-21 05:55:36 PM
I'm trying again:

This is a sticky-space:

(and, when I say "it looks like this", you can't really see it. I'm just lame that way.)

2002-03-21 05:56:51 PM
VIIseven7: hilarious! I love it...

2002-03-21 06:02:13 PM
Never mind Japan, Trunks has the right idea, I'm all for Ryoko on currency...with a picture like that, I might actually be inclined to hold on to my cash. :D

2002-03-21 06:03:55 PM
this needs a stupid tag

2002-03-21 06:04:01 PM
This just goes to show that there are retards in the US AND Japan that are in office! Go democracy!

2002-03-21 06:15:36 PM
They're hoping cartoon "monsters will frighten people away?" Only in Japan. Now, if they put little girls with plaid skirts hiked up to their neck being felt up by extraterrestrial slime octopoids... *shudder*

2002-03-21 06:32:37 PM
Gohanmastaflex: I once agin offer the possibliy that he was being ironic. When he said he thought the monsters would scare people he might have meant, "Yes, we are just doing this to get publicity and possibly money, but since this is a high-context culture and people aren't expected to come out and say thing and listeners are expected to read between the lines, I'm going to make a pithy evasive comment instead."

2002-03-21 06:43:07 PM
By "frighten people away" from counterfitting, I'm sure that he really means to "discourage" them from doing this. Really, any complex image would do, and only the Japanese would be cool enough to use cartoon characters instead of some cliched nationalistic image, like say a Prussian or bald eagle. Besides, cash with Domo Kun on it would be cool...

2002-03-21 07:11:10 PM
Best. Municipal Government. Ever.

2002-03-21 07:20:30 PM
I'm going to start drawing cartoon monsters on all my important documents.

2002-03-21 07:21:48 PM
HOWEVER. The real story here is the inspired use of alliteration in the headlines. Gentle sirs and ladies, I give you:

"Warder walloped for having wanton way with wicked woman"
"Professor ponders puerile penchant for panty peeking"
"Mid-life madness drives decent dudes deviant"

http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/waiwai/index.html

2002-03-21 07:25:40 PM
God, just as long as there's no Tentacle Monsters.

Then you end up with a lot of icky sticky money. *shudder*

2002-03-21 07:34:32 PM
And people wonder why I love Japan so much. =^)

2002-03-21 07:35:31 PM
Cosmic heat death-Yes,WaiWai rocks very much.It makes me want to both go to and stay a million miles away from Japan.

2002-03-21 07:48:46 PM
Being unemployed allows you certain freedoms you don't normally have... like watching late-night television. Dragon Ball Z is some messed up stuff! What is up with Japanese people? :D

2002-03-21 08:07:51 PM
DOmo-money

2002-03-21 08:42:35 PM
I swear to God, I love the Japanese. Our lousy government would never do anything this farking hilarious.

2002-03-21 08:47:45 PM
Trunks: Is that from Tenchi? Do I actually recognise something from good anime (as opposed to Pokemon)??? Woah...

2002-03-21 09:51:56 PM
Is it just me, or does this Shigeru Mizuki cartoon look Photoshopped?
