So who should they nail to the inside of the wardrobe? The witch, or the lion?

2005-03-07 04:36:03 PM
Well, despite the overtly Christian nature of the story, I can't help but think this is not a good thing.

2005-03-07 04:37:34 PM
Insiders say that the lion, playing the part of Aslan, was slightly harmed in the making of this movie.

drsheetz, hehehe.

well, it IS a very christian book, especially at the end of the series. but... you are going to have a LOT of hardliners decide that its blasphemous.

2005-03-07 04:42:45 PM
Oh fer crying out loud....

Just leave it in the goddamn subtext like the books did. Motherfarkers.

AgonistAlex: but... you are going to have a LOT of hardliners decide that its blasphemous.

Let 'em. If they knew a thing about C.S. Lewis, they'd keep their yaps shut. You can tell who the ignorant ones are by how much noise they make.

Christ. Bury your nose back in the book and just ignore the movie. Your childhood will remain a virgin.

2005-03-07 04:51:41 PM
It can't possibly be any worse than the Wonderworks made-for-TV production.

Rye_:

Christ. Bury your nose back in the book and just ignore the movie. Your childhood will remain a virgin.

Seconded. If anything, I'm surprised that it took so long for the series to be put to film.

And Rye, others may have missed the religious subject in your comment, but I sure caught it.

/Not really

2005-03-07 04:58:34 PM
Dammit....

"subject" = "subtext"

You've got that right. What a flaming piece of crap.

2005-03-07 05:01:14 PM
Yeah, not a good thing. I love these books. It sounds like I'm not going to love this movie.

2005-03-07 05:31:14 PM
If it's just as bloody, that's cool with me.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the movie but they can get as Jesusified as they want. I just wanna see cool creatures. I'm not looking for another LotR.

2005-03-07 06:07:41 PM
"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" basically is the "Passion of the Christ" for kids. That's the whole point.

That said, I have no confidence whatsoever in Disney doing justice to the works of that wonderful whiskey-swilling, cigar-smoking, sailor-cursing, theologian/philosopher Lewis.

I felt used after realizing it was an allegory, after having loved the books at face value when I was really young.

Damn you, Lewis, for cloaking your religious agenda in so much fantasy goodness!

/ooo, Turkish delight would be nice right about now . . .

2005-03-07 07:13:35 PM
I liked the books then, still like them now, and don't care if they are allegory.

2005-03-07 07:19:45 PM
The whole Narnian chronicles are an interesting read both as a child and as an adult. As a child you just think its a cool story about talking animals and the like. As an adult all the religious/christian overtones become somewhat obvious. If you haven't read the books since you were a kid, I advise you do. (unless you dont want your childhood ideals shattered)

If only people would give up on fairy tales once and for all...

Turkish Delight sucks.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/the_chronicles_of_narnia.html i have no html skills. i don't remember orcs in narnia...

2005-03-07 08:14:13 PM
Aw, MAN.
I didn't even enjoy the cartoon they made of the book years ago. It ruined my imagination of what I saw when I read the series.

/still has all Narnia books safely tucked together and dusted on the bookcase.
//never tried Turkish Delight. Heard it DOES suck. Another childhood imagination ruined.

2005-03-07 08:14:19 PM
I wonder how blatant they'll make the allegory. I'd rather leave it for the veiwer to figure out, but Hollywood execs like to dumb things down.

2005-03-07 08:14:48 PM
I wait for the agnostics(P.C. for atheists) to bash "organized" religon.

2005-03-07 08:16:34 PM
Wishing Hensen was still around. He (or his son who now handles all things Kermit) could of ROCKED in making this movie.
If we're talking Jesus, God bless The Dark Crystal!

Let's see how much blood Disney puts in this bad boy.

2005-03-07 08:17:59 PM

Excellent!
The Bible is a splendid piece of fiction. They should make more silly movies based on it.

2005-03-07 08:18:46 PM
Can't wait for the first 666 symbols and devil horns to be found in the backgrounds of single animation frames.

2005-03-07 08:19:12 PM
Except we're talking about The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

2005-03-07 08:21:43 PM
Heh, I read and reread and reread the CoN series as a young Jewish atheist. Loved 'em to death.

I'm not religious, but Lewis' attitude has always seemed refreshing. Hopefully that'll stick through whatever movie is made.

That said, religion or not, I'm skeptical of the possibilities for making a reasonable adaptation of a book with talking animals. It works as literature because you don't realize how f*cking stupid animals would look trying to articulate full stops and consonants without lips...

2005-03-07 08:22:12 PM
I'm just worried about the director. Is it possible the guy who did the Shrek movies can do this justice? I think I'd somehow give it to someone like Henry Selick. I'd say Tim Burton, but I'd be worried that he'd make it too German-expressionistic.

2005-03-07 08:22:45 PM
I'm excited for this movie. I enjoyed the books. Also the BBC versions of the movies when I was a kid. They're awful to see now, but still enjoyable :)

I still don't like the idea of Disney screwing around with it, but I'm sure the movies will still be good.

I'm another one of those who innocently enjoyed the books as a child, and felt betrayed when I found out that they were allegory. I didn't even find in the course of re-reading them...I picked up one of those encyclopedias for book series (they have a bunch for Lord of the Rings, for example) and was shocked to see that practically every single entry referred so a Bible passage of some sort.

After reading through that encyclopedia I became very good at picking out Christian symbolism in books. Served me well later in High School. But I haven't re-read the Narnia books since...oh, 1988 or so. I have trouble enjoying a story when I know I'm being preached at.

2005-03-07 08:24:03 PM
WETA, the FX company that did The Lord of The Rings is doing the effects for this, so it can't be all bad.

/wants some Turkish delight.

The Golden Compass = Narnia with a brain.

2005-03-07 08:24:57 PM
First, this is going to be a flaming piece of shiat as a movie, and I am probably not gonna see it. Next, did anyone here read the "His Dark Materials" books by Phillip Pullman? they're making those books into movies, but doing sort of the opposite of the Narnia books. The producers are taking out all the anti-religious subtext of the books when they make the movies. oh, and they fired Tom Stoppard as screenwriter.

Pestifer: The Golden Compass = Narnia with a brain.

you beat me to it

As a kid I was forbidden to own the books due to one word : Witch.

mistersite:

Huh. I read the books when I was like 7 and haven't thought twice about them until now. I guess I clearly missed the Christian symbolism.

DrSheetz:

I vaguely remember that scene from the book, I guess it must be much more explicit than I recall.

Thanks for the Turkish Delight recipe. Now how do I make Ruby Juice?

2005-03-07 08:32:44 PM
That trailer was pretty disappointing. The characters and props looked about Xena quality.

2005-03-07 08:32:46 PM
Have you seen the cast list for this "remake?"

Apparently, Disney doesn't care enough about this seven-book franchise to bring in big name stars. Not even Big Name Child Stars.

The Pevinses kids look like they'd be better suited for a Power Pack movie.

/going back to read the books for the 87th time
//No I'm not crying, I just have something in my eye...

2005-03-07 08:33:32 PM
I'm happy to report that my absolute infatuation with The Chronicles of Narnia all through my childhood did nothing to stifle the budding atheist that I was destined to become.

I also had the hots for Susan.

2005-03-07 08:34:14 PM
GOOD. Let them. It's there movie, and it's their audience.

/stoopid their/there/they're.

I never minded that the book was a xtian allegory, I'm just concerned about anything that fundamentalists praise, because lately anytime a fundamentalist opens their mouth it results in an extraneous amount of anti-semitism in the editorial pages of the media.

2005-03-07 08:37:38 PM
Well, the theology from the Lord of the Rings is based on Christian mythology (Gandalf and Sauron are both angels, for example).

2005-03-07 08:37:45 PM
Turkish Delight tastes like grandma.
