OGLE-TR-122B

At least they gave it a memorable name.

Am I going to die?

2005-03-04 09:13:28 PM
yes.

2005-03-04 09:13:28 PM
What is remarkable, however, is that OGLE-TR-122B is actually smaller than some of the planets discovered recently outside our Solar System.

Wow.

This starlet is somewhere around 10^-5 the luminosity of the sun. Seen at the distance of our Sun it would not be much brighter than a full moon.

My favorite thing about the article is that the telescope is called a VLT for.... wait for it..... Very Large Telescope....

*sigh* oh those scientists just KILL ME!

/would have called it BAT
//big ass telescope
///duh

There's a VLA too, for......... Very Large Array.

We better keep funding NASA because it means someday there would be a BAT...... Big Ass Telescope.

All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landings there.

I love that movie. Well, I did as a child, anyway.

When someone brings up a movie like 2010, I start to think about all sorts of neat movies I liked as a kid. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of many of them.

HAL 9000: I'm afraid.
Dave Bowman: Don't be. We'll be together.
HAL 9000: Where will we be?
Dave Bowman: Where I am now.

2001, 2010, 2061, 3001. All of them good stories.

Movies:
2001 was amazing, but hard to stay awake for.
2010 was good too.

2005-03-04 09:50:48 PM

I understand.
It is important that you believe me.
Please turn around.

One of my favorite movies of all time. It has always resonated with something inside me. Possibly as close as I get to being spiritual.

Gnomestar?

/Took me too long to do that

2010 was good except for John Lithgow
Who I'm sure was good in the movie, but his career SINCE that movie has tarnished his performance in repeat viewings

I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Crumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.

Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.
Ooooooooooooooomray.

Dude! One of my friends in Chile works at the VLT! Kick ass!

I think I'm gonna go make a Pisco Sour to celebrate.

Strange.... I was just reading 2061 about ten minutes ago. Didn't think many people would catch the Europa reference. The book series is actually a lot better than the movies, even though Kubrick's 2001 was awesome, it left a lot out.

I thought the same thing, see my reply above... i guess we're the only two who still remember the year 2000

I just finished reading all four books in the series...much better than the movies.

"Jupiter, the biggest planet in our Solar System."

I'm figuring this is journalists not doing homework and that in the original portugese there is a better explanation. If they officially called it the Very Big Telescope then thats just sad.

Bah, whatever, all educated people know stars run on electricity.

Bob Ross:

It's a shame they *have* to remind people that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system.

I worked in the Northern Arizona U. observatory for a couple of years. Some of the questions I was asked... no matter how hard I'd try to keep a straight face and respect every question, sometimes I wondered what kids were being taught science-wise in school.

/have seen attack ships burning off the shoulder of Orion
