Suitcoat Avenger: NP. I think I gotta get the original from the library again. That and perhaps read a few more from the list... which is it's purpose, of course.

Yeah, this list is total bollocks.....they could have left a lot of important characters of the list, but the fact they left Robert Slocum from Joseph Heller's "Something Happened" dissappoints me no end. He is without a doubt one of the most complex, funny, and depressing characters in modern literature. Screw Gatsby! That book was inane to begin with. Every child in America should have to read Something Happened if only to show them how contrived and bland our culture is.

Sci-fi or regular fiction, Thrawn deserves to be on the list.
But, yeah, Harry Potter over ANY LOTR characters?! WHAT?!

LOTR overrated? By whom? It didn't make the list, did it, unlike Harry Potter, who, along with every other fantasy/sci-fi work good or bad produced since 1945 owes a debt to Tolkien, especially the entire overrated Star Wars self-styled epic. But, of course, to appreciate LOTR, you haveta kinda know how to read above the level of grade 3.

And why wasn't Eric Clapton on the list?

2002-03-19 08:18:33 PM
At least some ones I liked made it:
7 - Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee, 1960
57 - Grendel, Grendel, John Gardner, 1971
59 - Big Brother, 1984, George Orwell, 1949
90 - Lennie Small, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck, 1937

Should Dr. Suess' Cat fall on this list? Just stikes me funny that he fits in, yet superman does not (seriously)...
39 - The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss, 1955

2002-03-19 08:19:24 PM
I'm nominating Alex (from a Clockwork Orange) and Holden Caufield before I even read the list.

Guy
2002-03-19 08:19:27 PM
Lazarus Long isn't on the list? Bah.

2002-03-19 08:19:48 PM
In the actual article, they give justification for each pick. It's not just a list of titles and authors. And, Bob_justice, I think the reason you aren't seeing a lot of SF/Fantasy characters on the list is because a great character is even better in the context of an interesting plot and environment, which you've admitted SF falls short on. Don't get me wrong, I read and enjoy science fiction (the early Wildcards novels are among my favorites) but I don't consider most of it on the same level as most of the books on this list. There are exceptions, of course. Heinlen, Bradbury, CJ Chery (sp?). But for the most part, SF is mind candy.

2002-03-19 08:19:53 PM
Lordargent, the Coldfire Trilogy kicked ass. I thought I was the only one to have read it....

I'd have been perfectly ok with this list, as nearly all of the books are classics. So for the most part I assumed it was a list of characters in books before about 1980. Then I read Harry Potter. What the bloody hell? Harry Potter is a piece of trash. I'd have even allowed Harry Potter his spot on the list if there had been other great SF/Fantasy characters, like Bilbo, Gandalf, Frodo, Roland of Gilead, or others had been on there. This list disgusts me for selling out like that.

2002-03-19 08:19:59 PM
I thought Winston was a lot more interesting than Big Brother. Almost makes me think they just put BB up for name recognition.

2002-03-19 08:21:09 PM
Or how about Billy Pilgrim from Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Arrrgh! Rant,rant,rant....

fark.

2002-03-19 08:21:33 PM
harry potter? you must be kidding me...

what a bunch of jackasses

2002-03-19 08:21:49 PM
Where's Ender Wiggins of Ender's Game fame?!?! Orson Scott Card kicks much sci-fi a_s_s.

2002-03-19 08:22:00 PM
Trot_to_Trotsky
Alex from A Clockwork Orange is not on the list.

Thus the list does not achieve maximum victory.

Yeah, no kidding...but Holden was number two. Yay.

2002-03-19 08:22:06 PM
No R.Daneel Olivaw?! WTF?! And they think Harry Potter is worth noting? Again I say.....WTF?

2002-03-19 08:22:12 PM
Vonnegut's characters are not his strong point.

2002-03-19 08:22:21 PM
Ooo, and Scarlett O'Hara.

2002-03-19 08:23:05 PM
Plasmo: Big Brother made it, though. He's 10x more memorable than all the animals put together.
Animal Farm is a good book. If I have children, it will be required reading for them.

2002-03-19 08:23:12 PM
Cupajo: The LOTR trilogy (four parts, I guess, if you include the Hobbit) is not without faults, you're right. Tolkien has a problem with pacing, mainly, since I know I don't particularly care about the entire lyrics of a random song the characters sing. But the world he created, Middle Earth, that's why his books succeeded so well, he was the first (to my knowledge) to create a whole world entirely from his imagination, and the detail that he had in it is remarkable. Regardless of how good of a writer he is, they are one of the most well-known and generally loved series ever, and since the list said the 100 BEST (as opposed to complex or something similar), I think it's at least worthy of a mentioning, though IMHO Frodo, Gandalf, or even Sam would be better choices than Bilbo.

2002-03-19 08:23:50 PM
And Dr. Zhivago!

2002-03-19 08:25:01 PM
Oh, and if you want to read what Harry Potter wants to be when it grown
the fark up, read this.

2002-03-19 08:25:31 PM
Oh, and almost forgot:

Lazarus Long (Time Enough for Love)
Valentine Michael Smith (A Stranger in a Strange Land)
Mike the Computer (The Moon is a Harsh Mistress)
The Creeper (Scooby Doo in "Carnival Creeper")

2002-03-19 08:25:53 PM
And another SF/F omission, again IMHO, would be Paul Atreides from Dune.

2002-03-19 08:25:54 PM
Where are Remo Williams and Dirk Pitt? These top 100 list makers have their collective heads up their collective asses.

2002-03-19 08:26:58 PM
I know this sounds cheesy, but Atrus from the Myst Trilogy would be a ncie SciFi list member, though you have to read the whole set to really understand why. Oh, and Big Brother was just a good representation of why we shouldn't trust one authority, he'd fit on the list a bit lower, maybe bumping Harry Potter (who'd fit in maybe after 50 years, the books are to new still) and maybe another 1984 character in BB's place. Darn, now I have to reread a ton of books all thanks to Fark...*looks for library card*

2002-03-19 08:27:27 PM
Okay, okay, it's about time for the flame war.

Will you farking sci-fi nerds quit your whining? Drew, can you please find an archive of the top 100 Piers Anthony sex scenes.. or anything else to get the nerd contingent busy with the Kleenex, so we can actually talk about LITERATURE in here?

2002-03-19 08:27:30 PM
Lastly, why didn't Jehovah from the Bible make it? I mean really, it's such well written fiction, that the Jehovah character has a huge fan base and club houses in almost every city.
(Yes I know the above was a cheap shot, but damn it was so easy......)

2002-03-19 08:27:40 PM
And where is Dirk Diggler? This article is soooooooo "ground-zero"

2002-03-19 08:29:04 PM
Irascible: I was waiting for someone to do that.

2002-03-19 08:29:18 PM
Oh, and don't forget Dude. That part...where he couldn't find his car...classic.

OBB
2002-03-19 08:29:28 PM
And why not name one of the coolest guys in modern pulp fiction, Tom Clancy's John Clark? Did the crumb-bums who made this list even read Without Remorse?

2002-03-19 08:30:21 PM
Some of you guys need to try looking for books somewhere OTHER THAN an airport bookstore..

2002-03-19 08:31:12 PM
Rebrane, I think you're mistaken if you don't consider things like The Lord of the Rings, Dune, Ender's Game and several of the others mentioned literature. I agree, some characters mentioned, like Raistlin, Vader, Batman, Elminster, and the like really shouldn't be on a list like this. But some people are making valid points by crying foul when Harry Potter is on the list and not a single Tolkien or Heinlen character made it.

2002-03-19 08:31:14 PM
Holy Hell.
I farking LIKE Harry Farking Potter!! *dances around with fingers in ears singing "NAH! NAH NAH!* At least he was towards the bottom....

Moving on, I would've very much liked to have seen Howard Roark from the Fountainhead on that list. And I think that Bradbury was robbed. What about the Monster from Frankenstein, largely regarded to be te first SF novel, and a darn spiffy one at that. The Monster was a very good character.

OH! and How about freaking Huck Finn? Damn. Top Whatever Lists suck.

2002-03-19 08:31:21 PM
I don't think Robert Graves' Claudius made the list, either. The people who put this list together only read what Oprah tells them to.

2002-03-19 08:31:48 PM
Half those characters on the list had personalities that could get them legally classified as dead.

2002-03-19 08:31:49 PM
Valentine Michael Smith has indeed been done an injustice here... I should've remembered that since I just re-read that book a couple of weeks ago. Tom Joad, too.

But then, I guess they're both sort of used to injustice. :P
