if anyone ever figures out what videogame inspired the brutal death of personal responsibility, let me know.

Does this mean I can sue them to be fairly compensated for the weeks of my life that I've spent playing video games?

It's going to be pretty hard to blame kids' actions on video games in court.
I blame crappy parents, but this is one more law that seeks to absolve them of any responsibility for the actions of their children.
It's always someone else's fault.

Thanks, Oprah.

I hate Bill. He's such a dick.

2005-03-02 04:22:49 PM
Good! Now I have someone to blame for my uncontrollable urge to jump over rolling barrels.

I'll take Stupid Laws for $600, Alex.

When I was a kid, video games hadn't been demonized yet as anything other than an addictive time-waster, since it was hard for anyone to blame violent actions on Pacman or Donkey Kong.
Violent cartoons were the devil-of-the-day back then.

And despite the fact that I've probably watched every Looney Toons cartoon ever made at least five times, I'd like to state for the record that I've never, ever hit anyone over the head with a giant mallet, nor have I ever smashed anyone on either side of the head with a pair of cymbals.

Not just RIP personal responsibility, RIP farking logic.

Does pr0n get credit for making me a better lover?

sens:

It's because they were too busy demonizing Dungeons and Dragons.

But can I sue game makers for making me inactive? Nowhere on the box did it suggest that playing games all day would cause harm to my health.

When will these bastards be brought to justice!? Ka-Ching!

When I'm done spending that money, I'm suing Parker Brothers for exposing me to paranormal molestation through their 'Ouija' board game. "Captain Howdy" my ass...

Guess it's time to build a deathmatch level based on the offices of Bill Hanson and the Washington Police and Sheriff's Association.

2005-03-02 04:32:23 PM
I'm all for this if I can also hold them responsible for my inaction. And for leading me to think that I was destined for NFL greatness.

/suing pants off of Tecmo

I'm sorry, this is my first greenlight. I am a happy fella.

And this bill is absurd.

I was hurt grabbing falling shapes from the air and attempting to arrange them in a way that the colors would match. I'm suing Tetris.

So when some kid rescues a princess in a game do the designers get knighted by the queen?

2005-03-02 04:36:06 PM
As a small indie game developer, I am so, so thrilled about this sort legislation *rolls eyes*. Hooray for personal responsibility. Do me a favour folks, if anyone has a shot of any games I've made and develops feeling violent tendencies towards simple geometric objects, please don't act on them. Last thing I need is a Lego lawsuit. ;)

At least the first few posts to the thread were hilarious. :) All the ones up to but not including mine. ;)

Tecmo Bowl made me an awesome football player
Grand Theft Auto made me a vicious killer.

Does it mean that I will get off scott free if I go on a shooting rampage from too much MOH or BF1942?

That's stupid and it stinks.

Final Fantasy 9 made me a pretty Japanese girl.

Holy shiat. Personal responsibility surrenders, gets shot with a 50 caliber anyway, does two backflips, lands in its grave, and promptly starts spinning.

2005-03-02 04:46:41 PM
It's because they were too busy demonizing Dungeons and Dragons.

And before that it was comic books.

2005-03-02 04:48:32 PM
What are they going to do about the American Army game that came out a couple years ago that was sponsored by the military?

I'm curious...

Kids under 17 aren't even supposed to have "M" rated games. Hold the stores or the parents accountable.

They don't charge beer makers when a kid gets caught drinking underage, they charge whoever got it for them.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

2005-03-02 05:08:20 PM
I'm glad I'm not a kid these days. You kids are farkED, and it's only gonna get worse!

I propose creating a new tag "COMPLETELY FCUKING INSANE"

2005-03-02 05:11:24 PM
Hm. Personal Responsibility continues to disintegrate.

2005-03-02 05:12:35 PM
Just about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Hopefully someone will get some common sense and vote it down.

Why stop there??? Maybe it's movies, tv, and music??? Or maybe it's the books or the news??

Might as well hold the game players parents accountable as well considering they should have monitored what they played to begin with during growth.

Just stupid... farking totally stupid.

2005-03-02 05:18:35 PM
Should the people who make and sell "violent video" games be held accountable if someone commits a crime because of playing them?

Absolutely, if you can prove the game took away the person's free choice and forced them to commit the crime.

Of course, that would be impossible to prove unless everyone who plays the game immediately goes out and commits the same crime.

2005-03-02 05:18:37 PM

You forgot the 'yet'.

This line of reasoning is currently being tested with gun manufacturers. It if sticks there, it will stick in other places as well.

That gravestone sums a lot of today up, especially the shiat I have to listen to in my education classes, where the teachers always portray the bad students as victims.
