Dave Barry is not funny!
He is never number funny!
He will lose, and yes again!
2002-03-19 09:35:58 PM
Apparently a lot of people find Dave Barry absolutely hilarious.

Beats me.
2002-03-19 09:36:37 PM
I used to love Dave Barry, haven't run into one of his articles for a while, thanks!
2002-03-19 09:40:24 PM
I thought it was funny.... but that's just me.

I didn't know Dave Barry got remarried....
2002-03-19 09:41:36 PM
It was far from his best work, but I never thought about WW2 in that sense. No wonder the seemingly unbeatable Nazis lost. They may have had better weapons and tactics, but they had to face the Von Traps. I'd shoot myself in my own bunker if they lived in my terrority to. Kind of almost makes you feel sorry for Hitler. There is evil, and then there is the Sound of Music. ::shudders::
2002-03-19 09:42:56 PM
When the dude from Night Court played him in that family show, it was ok, but the real Dave B is sorta not funny
2002-03-19 09:43:47 PM
I just liked the Jack Nicholson comment. It's just so very true.
2002-03-19 09:46:30 PM
except for the oldest von Trapp daughter, Liesl, who has a distinct American accent

Liesl was hot. Even when you deduct points for a stupidly-spelled name, dating a Nazi, and the fact that she was 16 going on 17. But before I turned 18 I used to find her hot, when it was legal to do so. Especially the scene when she gets soaked in the rain. You can see through the blouse. Try it sometime. The pause button that refreshes.

Dave Berry is coming to my unversity in St Louis on Monday and a fellow farker was invited to have dinner with him.
2002-03-19 09:51:38 PM
Dave Barry is hilarious. It's just that you may have to be older than fourteen to understand the humour.
2002-03-19 09:52:42 PM
That's why an estimated 40 billion people will tune in this year to watch the Academy Awards show

40 BILLION PEOPLE????????!!!
We have that much?

Cause if its true!!!
2002-03-19 09:58:12 PM
If anyone thinks they can do better, you're free to write a short article on the Oscars and post it for our critique. Let's see your hilarity ensue.
2002-03-19 10:17:24 PM
Well put Peaceboy! Bring on the entries, oh snide ones!
2002-03-19 10:18:33 PM
Rhiannon: I am 30

Peaceboy: I don't have to be a doctor, to see that one doesn't know what the hell he is doing. Ex. You ever see a bad boob job? Sure you have, how did you know it was a bad one if your not a plastic surgeon?? Point made.

Millay: Speak english, or at least canadian
2002-03-19 10:19:48 PM
Each year, the Academy gives the awards to people who really should have won last year. The reason they didn't win last year was that the Academy was giving the awards to people who should have won the year before that. This has been going on all the way back to the first Academy Awards, which apparently were handed out by total morons.

I usually don't find Barry to be all that amusing, but I thought that idea was pretty good.

I've 2 autographed Dave Barry books. Yes sir, that's my claim to fame!
2002-03-19 10:32:54 PM
lol..I think millay tried to post the "first" "post"...unfortunately he failed miserabley and got the "el primero? yo no Se." (translation: The first? I am not." I think...
2002-03-19 10:36:02 PM
Dave Barry used to make me laugh so hard I'd hurt myself. I think nowadays, I've gotten too used to his style of humor (which doesn't really evolve much.) Still worth some laughs, but not as many as back in the day.
2002-03-19 10:36:46 PM
Barry's been cool to my grandma and answers her little fan letters, so I think he's aight. I find him funnier at times than others, but I think it's harder than it seems to write consistently funny material, week-in-week-out over a couple decades. I don't know how many of us have tried that, to appreciate it. I also don't know many other similar professionals do it better, consistently. I further also don't know what kind of qualifications you need to be a professional humorist, other than a sense of humor and an ability to occasionally form complete sentences, so I'd imagine we're all on the same turf and could take a whack at it. But Rickard0 won me over when he invoked boobies in his argument, and for that I admire him.
2002-03-19 10:41:57 PM
Dave Barry rules. Waddya know. Actual humor without using the "F"-Word 50 times a paragraph. Also, no anal, sexual, fart, scat or penis humor.

Amazing what you can do when you have a brain.

Keep it up Dave. You're hilarious.
2002-03-19 10:42:37 PM
"Yo no se" -> I don't know.

"I am not" -> "Yo no soy"
2002-03-19 10:50:42 PM
he's a pathetic moron.
i understand his humor but it's so dull and not funny. he always writes the same type of stuff, and i can imagine him whining to himself as he's doing it.
2002-03-19 10:55:38 PM
Bigpeeler: Actual humor without using the "F"-Word 50 times a paragraph. Also, no anal, sexual, fart, scat or penis humor."

Man, if there isn't anal, sexual, fart, scat, penis or f*ck in it, it just isn't humor. Pesonally, I find Dave Barry as funny as finding out I just got another VD. BUT, I'm not going to fault anyone in here for liking him. I think what people fail to realize is there isn't a universal good sense of humor, only ones that match yours.
2002-03-19 11:00:31 PM
Ill kick your ass AmryOfFun
Well i cant im just disagreeing with you
2002-03-19 11:02:35 PM
True. True.

Richard Pryor - Great.
Lenny Bruce - Great (they say).
Jeff Foxworthy - Sux
Jake Johannsen - Totally great.
Lewis Black - G-g-g-g-great!

Believe it or not, I actually find Ellen Degeneres funny.

Steve Wright - Great.

I'm bored.
2002-03-19 11:03:18 PM
Ok, I am a big Dave Barry fan, I like a lot of his work, but WTF was this?

Not funny.
2002-03-19 11:09:58 PM
Humor, like music takes talent. It also takes work. Look at movies, music and comedy today as opposed to say, 30 years ago. Everything is 'in your face' today. Loud, crude, obscene. Movies (and humor and comedy) used to be able to use innuendo. They could say things with actually saying them. They made the audience think.

Today, it's unheard of. You're living on another planet if you don't admit that today's "entertainment" is basically no-holds-barred. Everyone tries to out do the other. That's why movies suck today. That's why TV sucks. Scooby-Doo remakes? Come on. Proof positive that brain power has gone out of entertainment.

Dave Barry is funny because he skirt's reality just enough so you still recognize what he's saying. I listen to some of these black comics today, and 90% of their humor is butt/poop/fart/anal sex. And it's not even funny. The audience laughs, because they are supposed to laugh. Very Pavlovian. "Oh jeez, he said a joke. Better laugh or I won't look cool." Bahhhh.....

God I miss the good old days.
2002-03-19 11:25:53 PM
Does this mean that they don't really give the awards to the people who should have won the previous year? I always thought that was true...

For the record, I have never actually watched an Academy Awards presentation. Pure waste of time.

Unlike, um, posting this message here...
2002-03-19 11:34:02 PM
Bigpeeler You sound so old! I think you're over-generalizing, lots of things may be loud, crude, obscene but that's not how everything is.

I think the out gross thing in entertainment today is a short fad, and it'll go away eventually. But I think its unfair to say movies suck today, TV sucks today, etc. In my opinion the vast majority of movies and TV has always sucked. You can probably think of a few classics, but surely they weren't all classics. Much like today, you can probably pick out a few movies you do like, but that doesn't mean they're all good.

As for your tirade against black comics, I don't see much of a jump between Redd Fox, Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy (or is he too cotemporary?) when compared with Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes or Sedrick the Entertainer.

I must be in a mood to argue.
2002-03-19 11:38:58 PM
irony...........some folks just don't get it, never have, never will....Dave's not often big-belly-laugh funny, frequently ironic-chuckle funny. Beats Cal Thomas any day unless you're really into surrealism.
2002-03-19 11:47:19 PM
MetaPhyzix, I know exactly what you mean. When I first discovered Dave I grabbed a book and could not stop laughing. I took out all of his books I could find at my library and read them straight through, and as I progressed my belly laughs turned into chuckles (as Lumber Jack pointed out). Still find it funny, just not THAT funny. I liked this article a lot though, especially the Jack Nicholson joke.
2002-03-20 12:57:10 AM
Dave Barry used to be funny.
2002-03-20 02:40:03 AM
The part about the Sound Of Music had me laughing.
2002-03-20 08:03:25 AM
I find Dave barry funny, I have most of his books. Love his columns. My wife used to work with Dave back in the mid 80's at the Miami Herald and she said he's a real jerk.
2002-03-20 08:33:23 AM
Dave has his moments of humor.
Although reading that has now driven to the brink of insanity again. My two girls each had their own favorite movie that we watched over and over day in and day out......
Now I can't get those dang Disney songs outta my head. Thanks alot Dave.
I just thank the almighty that neither one was The sound of Music
2002-03-20 09:29:12 AM
el primero? yo no Se.
2002-03-20 10:05:21 AM
Anybody who says Dave Barry isn't funny should go read "Dave Barry Slept Here." I never have and never will read a funnier book.
2002-03-20 11:58:16 AM
dubble suk

I find the fact that people find him funny to be actually funnier than he.
2002-03-20 12:01:57 PM

You want a funnier book? Check out "Big Trouble", Dave Barry's first (and so far only) novel. It's one of the few books that ever made me laugh out loud. I think the movie comes out in May.
2002-03-20 12:55:25 PM
"Big Trouble" the movie comes out on April 5th, delayed from the end of September since it's about a bomb and airport security and basically every possible sensitive issue. Hopefully it'll be as fantastic as the book, the commercials look good.
All his books are awesome, but my favorite is Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs, especially since I'm a young'un and haven't had to hear most of the songs in the book.
2002-03-20 02:42:11 PM
I am older than 14 and I find dave barry to be so unfunny. I meant really how low does your iq have to be, how boring must your life be to find this stuff in any way amusing. If finding dave barry funny is what america has come to then it is a sad day indeed.
