People are buying more T-mobile stores?

Any press is good press.

Plus, sidekickII is an awesome phone. Web browser, AIM, email (it can check POP3 boxes), telnet and ssh, text messages, and it's GSM.

Oh, by the way, if you are interested in buying one, check it out on amazon:
link here

It's $300, but it's on sale for $150, but it has a $150 rebate, so after rebate, it's free. Just sign up for 1 year of service, and the cheapest service is (the one I have) - 300 "whenever" minutes per month, unlimited weekends, unlimited data transfer for $50/mo. I got it for the internet features and stuff - I only use the phone part occasionally, so 300 minutes is good for me, especially since most of my calls are probably weekend calls.

I just wish totalfark had an Avantgo.html like farklite does. Surfing on the phone is slow, so I usually look for "mobile/pda" links. More websites than you think have one, including fark, slashdot, and weatherunderground, but ... not totalfark as far as I can tell.

I wonder why there hasn't been more of a backlash. I guess the world really is full of stupid people.

khatchaturian: I wonder why there hasn't been more of a backlash.

what backlash? the password was compromised because there is an option that lets you bypass the 'enter password now' if the coller id shows you are calling from your own phone.

it's the users fault for turning off any set of security that is in place by default.

this makes me glad I got their bottom-feeder phone...the Samsung POS they give away with the bottom-feeder service...unhackable.

also, this wasn't a "hack" it was a sociology experiment. the "hacker" got her # and PW from T-Mobile, it's not difficult to do.

2005-03-01 02:35:27 PM
I had just signed up for T-Mobile one week before the Paris Hilton thing.

I knew it was going to happen, so I got the jump on all these bandwagon-hoppers.

2005-03-01 02:36:37 PM
FWIW, I have the sidekick II, and I like it quite a lot. I wouldn't keep my social security number or any credit card numbers on it, and I wouldn't take any NWS photos with it, because I still don't trust T-Mobile to be properly secure.

2005-03-01 02:37:04 PM
I would never use a phone that I know has been hacked (unless it was social engineering).

I thought the "hacker" just used the lost password link where you answer a security question - in this case - what is the name of your favorite pet?

I guess I am one of those crazy people that like to keep their private information private,

Or could this be counter PR from T-Mobile? Drop a press release that says your customers don't care about the hacking and those that do care will overlook the potential breach of their privacy.

It doesn't really matter how he hacked into it... and I mean, really, I wouldn't call it a "hack"... saying you were able to sneak into Hilton's phone and "uncover" her password is like Ashlee Simpson saying that she doesn't lip-sync, she just "loses her voice sometimes"

I need a new cell. I've been with Sprint with a startac for 6-7 years. I don't need games/mp3s etc.....I need a quality phone with quality service.

I would like to have a megapixel cam/phone, but it's not neccessary.

recommendations?

From a b-list celebrity/amateur pornstar attention-whore?

I think people got confused and thought that if they sign up for T-mobile they would get more Paris Hilton porn sent to their sidekicks...

Okay folks, out with it: Who called up Vin Diesel, Fred Durst, or some other celeb from that list?

2005-03-01 03:02:47 PM
Ohy. This skank keeps getting press?

And, the "hacker" wasn't really a hacker at all. He simply used the ages-old technique of social engineering.

Jeez. I just use a Nokia cheap-arse TracFone. I paid $149 for the double-minute prepaid with 300 minutes. I get one year of service, and any time I need a new card I get double the minutes, so I just bought a 400-minute card, which gave me 800 minutes, for $79 and I haven't paid anything into the phone since then. Grand total for a year of service (1200 minutes, and I haven't even used half of that yet) was $228 all told.

Compare to a contract where I'd pay about $40 a month, for a total of $480 minimum, annually.

But oh! I don't get to use the dumb ringtones from the TV ads! I guess I'm not cool.

If I want cool graphics and music on a portable device, I'll whip out my PSP, thanks.

By the way- I highly encourage EVERYONE not to see "House of Wax" starring Paris Hilton. We need to send a message to Hollywood that we do NOT want her in any more movies! Watch the original Vincent Price version instead!

So me and my roommate were really bored, so we decided to start calling people. The quote of the night: "Who is Ashley Olsen?"

Thank goodness for roommates like him...

It's strangely coincidental that I was just thinking that this morning. What if this whole hacking business was just some BS viral marketing thing they dreamed up? "Nah," I says to myself, "nobody would risk THAT negative press for sales."

Har har, I am a sucker.

Don't worry, Ms. Wight. I had no intention whatsofukkinever of seeing House of Wax. It looks unforgivably stupid; my brain would atrophy and my cock 'n balls would shrivel before the opening credits were finished.

2005-03-01 03:29:19 PM
The only movie I plan on paying to see is the one where Paris finally loses the nightvision and goes legit.

.... and even then, i'm still not gonna pay for it; I can download it for no dollars and none more cents.

Okay folks, out with it: Who called up Vin Diesel, Fred Durst, or some other celeb from that list?

///raises hand
I did, sir, the day after the list came out. I gave Durst a call only to receive his answering machine message where he cunningly pretended as if he was answering... but he was not
! He basically made a series of "Mmm-hmmm...yep...uh-huh..." sounds before the "leave your message here" portion. I was wondering if he was the only person who hadn't changed his number yet at the time because he could use a few calls himself.

Chubbz I've got a little LG flip phone from Cingular/AT&T wireless. Since the merger the coverage area is huge. No complaints on the phone. Compact, does the job, decent reception, and just enough gadgets to keep me happy (I only use text messaging and download the occasional ringtone, I don't fool with pictures and email on my phone). I am on my 2nd one, but it's my fault as I killed the first one with a bad aftermarket charger.

I have a Sidekick 1.5 (color cause I'm patient like that). Thinking of moving up to Sidekick 2, but the overall cell reception its awful. Does the device improve any of this, or is it because I live the backwoods town of Boston?

No seriously, the cell drops out on Comm Ave.

I guess I was just surprised that these phones are actually easy enough to be used by Paris Hilton for day-to-day use.

I mean, up until the hack, I assumed the commercials were just hype.

I have a Motorola v400 and haven't had any real problems with it. It gets incredible reception and its got some good features, but not a megapixel camera. You should be able to get it at a fairly low price right now.

My better half had one of those tiny LG phones and it wasn't that great, she would totally miss calls because the phone wouldn't ring, the charge would only last about half a day (using the factory charger) and she couldn't connect to the internet. Sometimes she would get voicemails like a week later. I have the above mentioned Motorola and never had a problem while she had so many with her phone. I'm not saying you're wrong, thats just my experience with this particular phone.

My cell phone is 3 years old. I've driven over it and thrown it against the wall, still works.

Too cheep to buy a new one.

no such thing as bad publicity.

2005-03-01 08:15:23 PM
Maybe people looked at the list of contacts that Paris had and noticed that half the email addresses were @tmail.com.

Outside of nerdsville, phones are a fashion statement.

Me too, I love my ghetto ass cellphone. I don't have any of the problems that most other people around here have with their pay by the month carriers.
