given the options:

I'd chose A anyday!
2002-03-19 10:36:19 AM
The pub is my church.
2002-03-19 10:37:45 AM
At least some people on this planet have their priorities right.
2002-03-19 10:38:14 AM
How much is real estate in Ireland these days?
2002-03-19 10:39:39 AM
I must be Irish then.
2002-03-19 10:39:55 AM
I think this article is mistaken. From what little research and information I've read on the Irish people, religion lies at the core of their society. Though I'm sure they would "prefer" to be in a pub (and probably visit one later in the day) religion might be coming first in their hearts.

After all look at the origins of St. Patrick's day. From an Irish perspective it didn't focus on heavy drinking but was a holy day of obligation to celebrate st patrick.

As an Irish decendant and an agnostic I would have to agree
2002-03-19 10:43:12 AM
Damn right.
2002-03-19 10:44:51 AM
i like how Reuters says this is "breaking news."
2002-03-19 10:45:04 AM
The pub is my "church"
2002-03-19 10:45:13 AM
As an atheist drunkard Irishman, all I can say to this is....

*falls off bar stool*

...never mind.
2002-03-19 10:45:51 AM
Frox: beat me
2002-03-19 10:46:13 AM
Steelboots - nope sorry your research is wrong, years of hyprocisy from the catholic church has turned most of the younger Irish people against it, it still remains in rural areas but in most urban areas the new religion is money
2002-03-19 10:49:34 AM
Why can't we put pubs in the church, then?

Everybody wins.
2002-03-19 10:49:53 AM
Not to me, Cormee old boy :) The only thing I believe in is such, is freedom from capitalism ;)
2002-03-19 10:54:12 AM
CommieDave: aaaah the idealism of a peniless student (or an out of work actor) is always refreshing!!!!

damn you better be one of the two!!!
2002-03-19 10:56:01 AM
I'm an out of work peniless student :D
2002-03-19 10:59:20 AM
"Obvious"? There has got to be a word beyond 'Obvious' to describe this! 'Obvious' is too weak to encompass the fact presented with this article :)
2002-03-19 11:01:48 AM
I hear they also prefer beer to dentist visits. Is this really news? More importantly, did someone actually put time into coming to this conclusion?
2002-03-19 11:02:02 AM
Spasmolytic the Legal drinking age in ireland is 18 get your ass over here already! :-)

Cormee from my observations the new religion aint money... its mobile phones God help us! (or should that be nokia help us?)
2002-03-19 11:03:01 AM
CommieDave: Resistance is futile!

Go straight to the Fark registration area and reserve CapitalistDave for when you get your first pay packet! Then you too will be able to scoff at them as they wallow in self hatred in their damp bedsits on the Harolds Cross Road ;)
2002-03-19 11:07:12 AM
What's a church?
2002-03-19 11:08:04 AM
Ha Ha. Irish and drinking. Ha. 'Obvious', yeah obvious. Hilarious. Time and time again the old drinking Irish thing is played here on this website. How about this then: 'obvious: loud, obnoxious, dumb-ass americans in latest loud obnoxious dumb-ass stupid thing.'
2002-03-19 11:08:14 AM
My first pay packet went on feeding the poor and starving of Dublin 4.
2002-03-19 11:10:33 AM
This is what I'm usually doing on Sunday morn.

But I still got down on my kness every day and pray to my God and the way I perceive the concept of God.
2002-03-19 11:19:16 AM
When I wake up early in the morning, lift my head, I'm still yawning. When I'm in the middle of a dream; stay in bed, float up stream. Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me - leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping.
2002-03-19 11:24:39 AM
Steelboots, did your research include going to Ireland? You'll find there that the pub is not just for drinkin' - it is THE social center in almost every community. Everyone goes there for information on what's happening in their town/city - it's like one big interactive nightly local newscast (with beer). They are a Godly people, true, but I'm not in the least bit surprised at this survey!
2002-03-19 11:27:42 AM
18 as the drinking age you say? Goddamn i wanna come over! How come the US is so backward about it ?!

Now only a mere 94 days, 11 hours, 32 minutes, and 58 seconds until i turn 21
2002-03-19 11:28:16 AM
i prefer going to the bathroom than going to church...

Church bathrooms are filthy...
2002-03-19 11:31:18 AM
hey, you euroweenie-Farkers: i read somewhere that in poll europeans usually say they consider themselves religious but that few go to church. true?

the US, on the other hand, is seen as the font of secular evil in the world and we have the most charlie-churchgoing ned flandereses of all.

me, i believe god was a vacuum fluctuation
2002-03-19 11:34:06 AM
Whale oil beef hooked
2002-03-19 11:36:49 AM
All points taken under consdiration. I was just saying it appears that Irish people are religions at the core but who wouldn't prefer to be in a pub. But I also didn't realize that the newer generation was worshippers of money. And I would definitely love to visit Ireland and find out first hand.
2002-03-19 11:40:32 AM
Dear Lord,
Irish I had one more drink.

Your red nosed faithful follower,
Paddy O'Stinkbug
2002-03-19 11:42:48 AM
steelboots: yes i suppose irish society at its core is religious (well more so than pagan america! ;)) but the catholic church has really lost its power in the last 10 years and as a result of continuous scandals people are turning away from religion.

ps. you should visit too :o)
2002-03-19 11:47:39 AM
I propose a new acronym "GTFOOH" as in "get the f--- out of here" as a new tag ironically suggesting the highest degree of obviousness possible. I dedicate this idea to Tom Ridge and his color-coded alert system.
2002-03-19 11:50:10 AM
Hey how about an open invitation all the AmeriCanadian farkers; come visit Ireland and we'll let you stay in Cormee's house!
2002-03-19 11:52:08 AM
in other breaking news, english people, scottish people and everyone except nutcase puritans prefers pub to church
2002-03-19 12:03:21 PM
I have to pass a church on my way to the liquor store...I try to close my eyes.
2002-03-19 12:08:48 PM
eh....thanks for that CommieDave!!!

Our rates are as follows.....
2002-03-19 12:12:28 PM
In other news, more people prefer porn on the internet than CAP.
2002-03-19 12:19:54 PM
Why wouldn't they? At least in a bar you get results.
2002-03-19 12:23:57 PM
Albo: I think that if you read "spiritual" as opposed to religious you might get an answer.

Personally, I regard myself as spiritual, but not religious. Especially when I'm half-cut on a promise.
2002-03-19 12:29:56 PM
Drop by for a fillet-o-Christ and a blood shooter. "This is my body, eat me"
2002-03-19 12:30:15 PM
Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I have not drunk a Guiness in two days.

I recommend as your pennance then two Hail Marys and three shots of Sambuca.
2002-03-19 12:32:15 PM
Blarney! Somebody spiked the Holy Water! Oh, wait, this is O'Malley's Pub.

Who needs a church, when the Pub's full of Spirits?
2002-03-19 12:38:46 PM
I would like to beer please, and hold the jesus preachers.
2002-03-19 12:41:31 PM
Slayerwine, You were on your knees doing some heavy prayin last weeek.... Probably hittin the pub pretty hard too.,.
2002-03-19 01:11:41 PM
This is like the woman who "discovered" at least 5% of men are addicted to online porn. This is common sense. As an Irish desendent, I can sometimes coherently say that Guiness is much more preferable then God.
