500 million billion? Sounds like something they would say on Rugrats.

Ahh, Rhode Island. Formerly known as "God's Sewer."

It's the Taliban using hair-spray to keep those towels up.

In all seriousness, this is no alarm, as the ice was in the water already. What is interesting is how fast it broke off..

'500 million billion' is too wordy. I propose making 'bazillion' an official number

One4k4 good point.
In school they always taught us when a Ice cube in water melts, the water level stays the same. So what does it matter?

How many freakin' zeros in that?

When will the media sop claiming the utter bs that is global warming. Global warming is Earth's natural cycle. We went though an Ice age a few thousand years ago. Since then, the earth has been warming, and will continue to do so. Guess what, the rainforests did not exist in the years of the dinosaurs. It was a warmer era. The earth should be in a trend to reach a warmer time. So, we don't need the rainforests, and losing an insignificant part of the southern polar ice cap means nothing

Penguin-flavored Margaritas.

Hey, that news item was posted from London. That ice moved FAST!

the level will ACTUALLY drop slightly. most will evaporate and the contractual effect.

The ice was part of a shelf, ie it was not floating. Now that it floats, it will move to warmer waters, then melt.

2002-03-19 02:55:59 PM
The article is confusing. They also mention that inland the temperatures have gotten colder. Doesn't this conflict with the whole global warming idea?

2002-03-19 02:56:56 PM
Bri What matters is how fast it melted off. Joejoe has a good point, and so does Twister but that doesnt take into effect the causes of why it's melting so fast. It could simply be the course of nature, or something else.

Maybe we should stop testing nuclear bombs down there. ;)

Wait, let me get my g/f to move first

Big deal it's all melting too fast, I already have my hoarde of cigarretts, got my gas hidden and my water ski ready, and as soon as I recycle my piss, I'll drink it.

Nice, skinink Am I the only one that actually enjoyed Waterworld? I thought it was a great movie. Movie reviewers are so stupid. They say a movie is bad, then everyone else starts to believe it

If you beleive in Global Warming you are an idiot that believes everything the media says.

If you beleive that Global Warming is a natural cycle then you are an idiot that beleives all that new-agey gaia theory crap that was in the Final Fantasy movie.

So you are an idiot anyway and we're all going to die so we're all worth shiat.

2002-03-19 03:17:16 PM
I'm so confused, the temperature is increasing faster than the global average yet the temperature is going down? I took some math and science classes and I thought I did well. But can some one tell me how a value is decreasing yet going up. Is that like saying I'm fatter but I'm losing weight? Or, He's dead but still quite vavacious.

Actually this kind of thinking is kinda fun. Please feel free to come up with a few of your own.

I'm going to write my congressman and tell him to stop this Global Warming thing.

Matzung, ir finding came less than a week after a separate paper in Nature reported that Antarctica's harsh desert valleys - long considered a bellwether for global climate change - have grown noticeably cooler since the mid-1980s."

The sun is on the downside of it's pulse.

In case any of you were curious

IF the ice was originally on a shelf and completely out of the water, and IF the ice melted completely without extra evaporation, the earth's water level would rise about .07 inch by my calculations. So this one, at least, won't destroy New Orleans.

It's not the icecube above the water that's the problem. It's the three icecubes lurking below the water that are dangerous. Like, a turtle isn't just the part sticking out of the shell.

Twister: Wouldn't that make people who watch or read movie reviews stupid?
I mean, if I had the power the control peoples opinions on popular media I might too one day be tempted to use my super powers for evil, rather than good like all the reviewers who hated water world.

Tricky Chicken:

Temperatures are increasing faster than averages would indicate. Increasing temperatures, however, lead to the possibility of an early ice age as water currents, moisture content, etc. are thrown askew.

2002-03-19 03:39:41 PM
So what! It will evaporate, become snow, fall on Antartica, join with a bunch of other snowflakes, become a glacier, slowly inch its way to the ocean, form a "shelf" the size of Rhode Island again, and then dive in.
Meanwhile, Chicken little will scream!

Actually, none of the rising sea level predictions relies on melting ice. If sea level rises, it will be due to thermal expansion. Liquid water is affected by thermal expansion, so that when the oceans warm up, they take up more space. Melting ice doesn't really matter too much.

Rough tranlation of God talking to his chaoticians:

God: It's about time I flipped Earth's steady-state, eh?

Chaotician: Yes, undoubtedly. You haven't caused a good full-blown ice age for 20,000 years.

God: Ah yes, I remember that one. Those mammoths didn't think they were so wooly after that, did they?

Chaotician: You show'd them! Want me to flip the switch cleanly?

God: Nah, the mammoths aren't a problem anymore, but these human virii seem to think they know everything about Earth. Let's issue a few swirling chaotic events, with lots of contradictory evidence. Ice caps melting, that sorta thing.

Chaotician: Good idea.

God: Of course it's a good idea.
