Um, cheap advertising?

/didn't RTFA

2005-02-24 03:38:17 PM
Is there a single living person who doesn't already know about the mechanics of this attention whoring company?

2005-02-24 03:38:23 PM
RTFA.

yup, cheap advertising.

2005-02-24 03:41:18 PM
This greelight brought to you by Golden Palace for $11.34.

/I miss that.

2005-02-24 03:45:40 PM
If I'm not mistaken, this is an online casino. They can't attract people to their venue by headlining Neal Diamond or a cabaret show.
I say let them spend 28k on a sandwich.

2005-02-24 03:50:07 PM
Because people stopped publicizing their streakers?

// the golf chick was pretty hot...

2005-02-24 03:56:31 PM
It's a really good sandwich.

2005-02-24 04:07:55 PM
RTFA.

Not "cheap advertising". More like "the only advertising" they can do.

It's actually a very interesting article, especially if you like to play poker.

2005-02-24 04:13:24 PM
On another note from something in the article, that Sen. John Kyl bill, at least when he was doing it 5-6 years ago, got the attention of even Fantasy sports operators. Back when I work at STATS, Inc. back then, they were involved in trying to shut down the law, because it seemed much too broad and it would even make playing Fantasy Football or baseball illegal.

I don't know if he's tightened up the language in it or not since then.

too busy to go out for lunch?

/I read the article

2005-02-24 04:18:52 PM
As soon as caesarspalace.com, bellagio.com, mgmgrand.com, etc. become legal, Golden Palace will be "remember when..." material.

2005-02-24 04:55:08 PM
Just Ignorant

Not going to happen in the foreseeable future due to the Wire Act of '61. I actually have an interesting article from Barrons Online from Monday that lays it out and explains why the offshores have their niche protected and how they are sound investments.

Beating the government at their own game...saving money doing it and making a killing at it...Capitalism at it's finest...

I love it!

How could our loveable Vegas gangsters let their baby get away like this?

I heard they also spent $12,000 for a box of Jeez-its.

2005-02-24 06:41:47 PM
I will never understand while gambling, and/or advertising for it is illegal.

Don't you know gambling makes baby jeebus cry?

Tori Spelling can't even afford those, and she needs 'em.

Stupid online gambling site gets mentioned in WSJ, FARK, all news networks

To get that same level of media covereage would cost millions if the laws would allow it. $28,000 is pretty cheap.

Stupid online gambling site still stupid?

/corporate attention whoring at its finest

2005-02-24 06:52:00 PM
who the fark cares, they are making billions. Like they need to put ads on Fox or ESPN to get by.
caesarspalace.com, bellagio.com, mgmgrand.com will never have direct online gaming with their name on it. I wouldn't be supprised if they somehow invest in this sort of thing though.

2005-02-24 06:55:32 PM
The sad fact is that a company can spend $28k on a grilled cheese sandwich and reap millions of dollars of public relations/advertising from media inquiries covering the story.

It's sad that humanity is so stupid that it pays attention and talks about these stories.

2005-02-24 06:57:21 PM
Everyone here knows what Golden Palace is and what their web address is.

nuff said.

2005-02-24 06:59:08 PM
1. Start a business in which you can take money from stupid people legally.

2. Spend $28,000 on a toasted cheese sandwich, so that even the dumbest moran on the planet will think, "Wow, even I am smarter than these dudes."

3. Profit.

/If it were rocket science, NASA would be running casinos, and we would be exploring Alpha Centauri by now.

Yeah.

Add this to Things I Thought Of When Windows For Workgroups 3.11 and Trumpet Winsock Were Out And Didn't Do Anything About.

Along with a search engine and newsgroup aggregator.

Out of that list of why don't ____ casinos do it, the least likely would be bellagio even if it went offshore. the idea behind their casino was a "ritzy" theme, so they don't want joe schmo sitting in his undies associated with their marketing niche.

2005-02-24 07:02:44 PM
This year, revenue for the roughly 2,000 gambling Web sites will reach $9.8 billion, up from $7.5 billion last year and $5.7 billion two years ago, according to Christiansen Capital Advisors, a research firm.

Damn! I want to get in on that action.

2005-02-24 07:11:08 PM
I honestly would be very reluctant to gamble online using a company that doesn't have to be inspected by the U.S. government. How do you know they aren't ripping you off by doing things like automatically adjusting the odds on games?

2005-02-24 07:14:38 PM
Video News Releases and Press Releases for crap they've bought.

/was going to do a huge project on this, did it on something else instead

2005-02-24 07:15:45 PM
So wait, Golden Palace is a front for SportsByBrook.com?! Gambling for boobies sounds like a great idea on paper, but will it sell?

2005-02-24 07:22:16 PM
On a related note, I cannot wait until the stupid poker fad dies out. It is easily the most annoying fad I've encountered in the past ten years, and I hate it and every jackass who has to buy a special edition set of poker chips so he and his idiot friends can sit around a stupid table and play farking cards one night a week while their wives sit out in the living room and watch American Idol.

2005-02-24 07:26:45 PM
Gambling is investing for people bad at math and investing.

/the ONE time you won blah blah blah don't count.

2005-02-24 07:30:28 PM
Ah, Fark must be restricted by Gambling advertising laws..

That explains why did Drew plunked down $3K on UFIA Arena, err Boston Gardens.

YES, I want to play too but how can you ever make sure they are legit?

There are those that think gambling is bad and a waste of money but some of us play just for the adrenaline rush (i.e. we can affford it). Anybody know a good one?

Poker is that fatass attempt to appear manly and worldly; and for the ladies, just an opportunity to cheat on their husbands.

Gamblers tend to have rotten body odor due to their compulsions, while the little old ladies at the slots have either a hacker's cough or a smoker's laugh.

Men that play poker are closet socialites that want to compete in the small things in life, rather than reach for higher ideals and they eat too much sour dip with their chips and are mostly alcoholics.

Poker is just a pun for anal sex with women.

The game has no community value. It is as old as the hills and an addiction inspired by demoniacal poker chip companies, card companies, green felt table companies, and Bad Company.

$28,000?

i bet bacon is extra and it comes with sun dried tomatoes.

Here is my question regarding online gambling... Since it is illegal, what happens if you win big? Do you need to submit your SSN so that they can file the tax forms with the IRS, like you have to in Vegas? I know the IRS official answer is that all income has to be reported legal or not, but seriously... are they going to report you to the IRS if you win big?

2005-02-24 07:42:32 PM
poker is cool, only if you have a good bunch of friends who you would want to spend 3 hours with, drinking, talking the night away

sitting in your undies playing on a computer at 3Am with your only companion being the stain in your shorts is just sad, no matter what the domain name is.

Why? They're more than happy to take the clothes off your back if you let them.

SkeetSkeetOnU: Since it is illegal, what happens if you win big?

The penalty for illegal gambling is less than for tax evasion, chalk it up to operating expences, collect your winnings, pay fine, declare on taxes, you're all good.

$28,000 could by one hell of a lot of grilled cheese sammiches for the homeless.

And they won't care about who's face is on it.

FIVE REASONS I'M LEAVING FARK.

1. IT REQUIRES TOO MUCH TIME
2. I WILL NEVER MEET THESE PEOPLE THAT I FIND SO COOL
3. I HAVE TO USE NOTEPAD
4. IT'S TOO ADDICTIVE
5. I MISS THE NEWS.

2005-02-24 08:19:32 PM
Very interesting article, much more so beyond the obvious tag.

The obvious tag usually just means people won't RTFA and comment anyway. But it's interesting to see that the casinos are actually illegal, and have to find ways to skirt the law.

No kidding. 10 billion among 2000 sites? Isn't that, oh, 5 million per site on average? Where do I sign up?

The Episcopalian or Southern Baptist Baby Jeebus, perhaps.

The Roman Catholic Jeebus thinks it's fine..for the longerst time, the only legally sanctioned ganbling was run by your local Catholic Parish..

OK, that was boring. What'd I miss? :-)
