Actually, Bigfoot hunting and fishing for Loch Ness monster are right up there with hitting a ball pitched by a major league pitcher. Not to mention giant squid rasslin'!

So I guess you are afraid of everything that you do not like or just does not intrest you. Because most Americans have no intrest in Cricket means we fear it, right? But not just that, we fear anything not American according to some of you. Thats xenophobia.

So with that reasoning, the non-xenophobic ClownCollegeGraduate, likes to have gay sex with dirty dead goats.

You see, you are afraid of everything you do not like right. ClownCollegeGraduate and others like him are above that. They would have to be to generalize Americans as xenophobic because they do not like cricket. Since I am sure many lowly americans do not like dead goat sex, the English must because they like cricket.

So in conclusion, liking Cricket makes you a homosexual who has intercourse with dead same sex goats that are not clean. It is all supported in the superior reasoning in the posts above.

Cricket is a fun game to play, and a decent game to watch if you've nothing better to do.

I won a trophy as best batsman in the under 12 team I played for a long time ago.

Worship me.

Unlike anything in the USA, when there is a 'World Series' in Cricket, the organisers have the decency to invite other countries. I've never heard of a 'World Series' anything in the USA *yawn*, invloving anyone other than US states or cities.......There are other countries and sports outside the USA!!!!!

American Football, where heavily padded 'himbos' run for 30 seconds and then are taken off and rested....*double yawn*.

Cricket, the best game in the world. When I saw the headline at Fark there were 111 comments, a notorious number in cricket.
What other game can you watch for 5 days, no one wins (and it was a draw, not a tie) and come away thinking it was one of the best games you've ever seen.

A kiwi, of all people, successfully getting under the skin of a Yankees supporter during the Baseball World Series offered this gem:
"Baseball is to cricket what checkers is to chess."
The silly seppo then tried to argue from a position of total ignorance of cricket...
sound familiar

Oh, and another thing, that link SUCKS! You don't play for a team, you just control the whole game. So you can give up appeals for England. I just got the highest ever 4th wicket partnership by a pair of twin brothers (Mark and Steve Waugh) by making England not give up their appeals.
hehehe, in another sense it's kind of fun to watch the mighty Baggy Green wearing Aussies humiliate those pathetic poms all over again.

Well, for those of you who think only 2 countries play cricket, or America doesn't play, or those who are interested, here's some info for you.

The governing body of cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC has 3 levels of membership, Full Members (the Test playing nations), Associate Members and Affiliate Members. (And yes, it is possible to "upgrade" your membership status).

The Full members are: Australia, Bangladesh, England (actually England and Wales), India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies (the member nations of the West Indies Cricket Board are Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Lucia) and Zimbabwe.

The Associate Members are: Argentina, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, East & Central Africa (Malawi and Zambia to be precise), Fiji, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Namibia, The Netherlands, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Singapore, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, the USA and West Africa (Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone to be precise).

The Affiliate Members are: Afghanistan, Austria, the Bahamas, Bahrain, Belgium, Belize, Bhutan, Botswana, Brunei, the Cayman Islands, the Cook Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Lesotho, Luxembourg, the Maldives, Malta, Morocco, Norway, Oman, the Phillipines, Portugal, Qatar, Samoa, Spain, St. Helena, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tonga and Vanuatu.

And those are JUST the countries that are ICC members, cricket is played in non-ICC member nations as well.

And Hotdog, baseball is an Olympic sport because, like every other sport thats been added to the Olympics in the past couple of decades, America wanted it to be an Olympic sport. If the USA were Full ICC members, and world champs like Australia currently is, how long do you think it'd take cricket to become an Olympic sport? Tomorrow? ;)

I was like, all right, I can finally understand it. Then I actually clicked "Play the game" and everything went downhill from there.

This scares me . . .

Well said, Cutter. I couldn't have done better. Nice name, too.

Let me know if you're coming to the Caribbean. Good friend from Guyana's national youth squad. Maybe good seats at Sabina Park for WI vs. India this year.

2002-03-18 09:16:33 PM
Thanx Skillpot. :)

Don't think I'll be coming to the Caribbean anytime soon. I'd love to but I haven't got the cash. :(

If I start saving now though I might be able to get there for the '07 World Cup. :)

For any of you blokes who follow cricket, did you hear about nathan Astle's 200 off only 153 balls against the Poms. He hit 28 4's and 11 6's. He obliterated Gilchrists record which was only set a week or so ago. He brought up the second 100 off only 39 balls. i would have loved to see it, it sounded like the innings of a lifetime.

For you guys who don't follow cricket, EA Sports has a cricket game out for the PS2. They used to have a PC version that you could download a demo game for, but I can't find it. The homepage for the new game is:

I'm an American of Indian descent. Believe me, I've watched it. I still don't like it. It's like baseball only the same two guys are up to bat all the time. It seems that way anyway. And then the runs pile up to an incredible amount.

It's just one of those things where if you grew up with it, you really like it. My Dad tried to tell me that baseball was boring and cricket was cool. I challenged him to show me how cricket was more interesting than baseball and he finally admitted that he liked it more because if reminded him of his childhood in Calcutta.

I'm starting to think that Aussies and Kiwis will play anything. I know that they have olympic baseball teams along with all the other sports they play.

This turned out to be a boring post. Er.....boobies!!

Quick thought: how can they call it a Mr. Universe competition when all the competitors are from Earth? Huh? Huh?

Just clearing something up here: bowling in cricket is not like lawn bowls or ten pin bowling. It is like pitching in baseball except you have to swing the arm around over your head keeping it straight. It really pisses me off when Americans get that wrong. and NewBuhhhrito - how is cricket like hockey??

Uncle Scrotor:

And yes, hitting a baseball pitched by a major-league quality pitcher is one of the most difficult accomplishments in athletics. You'd be considered damn good if you had a consistent .300 batting average. When a success rate of 30 percent by lifelong professionals is treated as exceptional, you know it's gotta be pretty tough to do.

I've heard this many a time and I disagree with this assesment. By this logic being an NHL goalie would be easy because you end up stopping roughly 90% of all attempts to score on you. Conversely being an NHL forward would be far more difficult than a batter because it's unlikely that you could score at a pace of one goal per 3 or 4 shots for the length of a season. Infact the current shooting pct. leader in the NHL who's played more than an arbitrary 20 games this season is Columbus' Brett Harkins who's only scoring 22.2 % of the time when he gets a shot directly on net. I agree that batting is very difficult but there are other difficult activities in the world of sport, and it's something that can't really be laid out using only stats.

upon reading some of this posts something us 'outsiders' have always know becomes blindingly obvious

AMERICA IS A NATION OF IGNORANT, NARROW-MINDED XENOPHOBES

I love Australian Rules Football. Those are some bad-azz muthas out there on the pitch.

Oh yeah, and it's one of the only two sports I know where you can score a little "behind".

Now go and play that girls game called rounders or as you chaps call it baseball.

Mercutio: That is the sharpest application of logic I have ever witnessed on the web. I have an honours degree in Philosophy and you just made me blow a load with that little spiel. *L* Very impressive.

A welcome change from the "Fark you", "No, fark YOU" style arguments I'm used to seeing.

Here's my opinion for what it's worth:

I reckon it's really a cultural issue. If you grew up in a cricket-playing nation, you're more likely to understand and like it, and if you grew up in a baseball-playing nation you're more likely to understand and like baseball.

SImple, really.

Only difference is that people from most countries are prepared to learn about and understand new and different sports, but it seems to me that many Americans simply dismiss cricket as stupid merely because they don't understand it.

I don't know the first thing about baseball, and I don't really care, either. I don't think it's dumb, it just doesn't interest me.

I think if more people were prepared to say that, rather than "it's confusing and it sucks", we never would have had this argument. *S*

*runs for cover*

2002-03-19 06:43:48 AM
Wow another argument about baseball and cricket. Funny that.

Take it from someone that has played both. Neither is especially confusing. If you don't understand its only because you haven't tried. That applies to both baseball and cricket.

"Only difference is that people from most countries are prepared to learn about and understand new and different sports, but it seems to me that many Americans simply dismiss cricket as stupid merely because they don't understand it."

Hear hear. I've played cricket semi-professionally since I was 14 (represented Queensland in U16), I can't see how anyone could possibly think its inferior to baseball, or any other sport for that matter. Its not that confusing either, you'd have to be mentally feeble to not be able to understand it, if you made an honest effort.

Lankiveil: Here, here! Baseball's a great game, but I think cricket just has so much more depth. It's the difference between a beer, and a fine wine.

I hate wine!

2002-03-19 09:51:23 AM
Oh and America is not xenophobic, we just don't give a shiat what everyone else likes. I'm not saying I think Cricket is crap, I just don't care. And if Cricket becomes an Olympic sport, we'll push NFL football in.

2002-03-19 10:04:31 AM
I hate wine!

Hahaha... some how, i'm not surprised.

2002-03-19 10:25:16 AM
Hey, whatever. I just don't like it. I'm not saying your a pussy for drinking wine, but I can't seemed to find a good vintage that accentuates fritos.

And as for Cricket being a world sport, the full memebrs more or less is England, India, Oceanana.
And to be an associate memeber, it appears that the only requirement is a country where someone can pronouce "cricket"

Well, I wrote the farking program and so I 'spose I'd better defend it.

Firstly, to the twonk who accused it of bad web design, have a look at the date of the code, babe: 1997 - most of you didn't have email five years ago, let alone the ability to code a game in client-side script, which means that it could run without recourse to (then) expensive databases or CGI-scripts. Show me your coding from 1997 and we'll see what bad web design is all about.

Secondly, I'd forgotton I'd written the program and left it buried at the bottom of a web-server somewhere. I'm really grateful to Fark.com for reminding me of its existance, although that probably means I'm going to have to try and re-write it and do all those things I promised more than five years ago....

Thirdly, I expected everyone to know how to play cricket at least and perhaps remember the dice game of dot-cricket: played with two dice and a paper and pencil. If you missed out on that 1960's to 1970's experience, then I'm afraid you just havn't lived. It was a good alternative to Battleships at the time, but not much more exciting.

That is why I didn't bother explaining the game too well, because you don't expect a horde of yanks pulling up outside your door and complaining they don't know the rules. I don't understand baseball either, so we must be quits.

Oh, BTW, Cricket is played in the USA, to a reasonable club standard, on one of the parks in Brooklyn, NYC. I stood and watched an excellent game played by (mainly) Asian and W.Indian ex-pats. Go along next summer and pick it up: cricket really is a great game, best enjoyed from the beer tent.

Thank you for stopping by at the game. It was nice to be reminded of it.

Fr. Simon Rundell
