Cricket is a world game, tremendously popular in the Indian Subcontinent and the English speaking Caribbean. It is a sport with great traditions and dignity, played with a respect for authority and a measured intensity not often found in this day and age.

Yes, it has it's dead spots. It probabaly lasts too long. But for fans, somehow that only seems to add to the devotion for the game.

I can understand the mentality of most Americans who may think it's too slow. But it you can watch golf-appreciate the the texture, savor the moments of concentration, and marvel at the strokeplay-you can learn to appreciate cricket.

Now, if only the West Indies can get their act together, CCG.....

Well, not to split hairs, but a hole in one is the result of hitting a stationairy ball. Hitting a baseball in and of itself is considerably harder than hitting a golf ball. Achieving a hole in one is statistically more difficult.

I just got back from ten days in London. Nice place, except for all the funny cars. A Limey explained Cricket to me in a pub. Makes sense, really. Don't know why they play it for three days, but it sounds kind of fun. I suspect a few hours spend drinking beer and batting with your buds would be a good Saturday afternoon.

Regarding xenophobic Americans:

I'm an American, and might be interested in cricket if I knew what it was about and how it worked. But I have yet to find anywhere a description of the game that doesn't already assume you're already familiar with it. Lots of reference type stuff, and minutiae-laden descriptions, but no good overview or summary. More Americans might appreciate cricket if someone would bother telling us what the hell it is, aside from "it's kinda like baseball, but not really".

And yes, hitting a baseball pitched by a major-league quality pitcher is one of the most difficult accomplishments in athletics. You'd be considered damn good if you had a consistent .300 batting average. When a success rate of 30 percent by lifelong professionals is treated as exceptional, you know it's gotta be pretty tough to do.

Just my opinion.

Contrary to general opinion here, cricket _is_ played in the USA (though not as widely as else where). The Usonan team won the America's Cup in Argentina last week, in fact, although the tournament was truncated somewhat due to heavy rain.

JoshSmenge, I would guess that hitting a baseball is still harder than hitting a fast-bowled cricket ball, largely because the cricket bat is wider and much flatter than the baseball bat.

The average MLB average is about .265. And about 80% of the outs are due to fielding rather than strikeouts.

It is in fact pretty easy for an MLB hitter to hit MLB pitching, but not to do it with the accuracy necessary to get the ball past MLB fielding.

But that contact with the ball comes after 5-10 pitches. But they get all those pitches.

I play football (soccer) AND cricket for a club. Cricket is played with a heavy, rock-hard ball which could crack someone' skull easily. And I've played with fast bowlers who usually "throw" the ball at speeds above 80 MPH.

And Cricket is played in more then 2 countries.

I'll say that hitting a change-up from Pedro Martinez (the way he threw them in say, '99) or Kerry Wood's '98 curve ball would be nearly impossible for even pro hitters.

But those in the know would quickly counter that Shoaib Akhtar bowling (not throwing) at around 100 mph is at least as difficult.

Having spent significant time around both sports, I can say it would be very interesting to see how each could contribute to the other's talent pool. Too bad there's such a large cultural gap.

The hardest feat in professional sports is hitting a ping pong ball, because "it's moving." Anyone can hit a stationary object, but ping pong balls actually MOVE when your trying to hit them. It's like trying to hit something in the air that is actually changing position with respect to time(or MOVING as some people would say). Now you may think it's easy to hit a ping pong ball that's MOVING, but have you ever tried to hit a ping pong ball that was volleyed back at you at 100 MPH with front stroke english by a Major League Ping Pong Player? I think not! In fact hitting a MOVING ping pong serve from a MLPP player has been statistically proven time and time again as one of the toughest feats in all of sports. okay, that's enough. . .
