I can get that from reading Charlotte's Web. :)

i figured out cricket. here it is:

(cos x + i sin x)^n = cos nx +i sin nx,
where n is any real number. The key to your problem is to find x such that cos x = 1 and
sin x = -1. When x =- Pi/4, cos x=1/SQRT(2) and sin x = -1/SQRT(2), where SQRT means square root. Therefore, (1-i)^10 = {SQRT(2)*(cos (-Pi/4) + i sin (-Pi/4))}^10
= (SQRT(2)^10)*(cos (-5Pi/2) + i sin (-5Pi/2)), by DeMoivre's
theorem =32 * -i = -32i

"Just feel like getting back at the Americans who constantly bad mouth sports which are played globally."

Well if it isn't played in the U.S., then I guess it isn't "global", now is it?

I'm with CrownCollegeGraduate on this one.

Cricket is a world game, tremendously popular in the Indian Subcontinent and the English speaking Caribbean. It is a sport with great traditions and dignity, played with a respect for authority and a measured intensity not often found in this day and age.

Yes, it has it's dead spots. It probabaly lasts too long. But for fans, somehow that only seems to add to the devotion for the game.

I can understand the mentality of most Americans who may think it's too slow. But it you can watch golf-appreciate the the texture, savor the moments of concentration, and marvel at the strokeplay-you can learn to appreciate cricket.

Now, if only the West Indies can get their act together, CCG.....

Eh, that didn't help me understand the game. It is incomprehensible to my American, soccer-loving brain.

Yes, I am an American, and I have a deep appreciation for real football. Oh yeah.

2002-03-18 04:52:18 PM
Baseball is an Olympic sport.

So is "Synchronized Trampoline". I shiat you not.

Of course, baseball is still a great sport, and it is played globally. Cricket might be great if it didn't take so damn long to play.

Note to self: Fellow farkers are xenophobes who shun any sport not popular in America...

by the way, I AM American.

2002-03-18 04:52:32 PM
Ah, come on, folks. Who can't like a game where a match ("test") can take several days; where the phrase "leg before wicket" actually means something; where a player gets in trouble and is fined 40% of a match fee for protesting (heh, DEFINITELY not an American sport!); and where participants speak every dialect of English (except American), meaning no one can understand one another but they get very excited about it anyway.

Truly, I think you have to drive on the left-hand side of the road to "get" this game....

Not anymore. OJ broke down that barrier...;-)

Yet another fark link to boil our zealous nationalists around the world into a BLOOD FURY!
"(american)football rules, you pansy brit", "no cricket rules, you greedy yank"...YAWN
why don't we all start in on the weekly "Americans can't brew beer" now so that everyone can get it out of their systems.

nonsense. We just don't put up with silly games that allow you the chance to say 'Oyyyyy! Jolly good googly there Nigel. What say? Oooooo, he's out for ducks!!!'

Uhhh, Ekko, that brewing beer discussion is over at the link to http://www.miami.com/mld/miami/news/2884817.htm, "Man dies in fight over can of beer." But I suppose it wouldn't be too bad to start it here. Long live Paulaner Salvator!!

Hotdog: "Statistically, it has been proven time and again, the single hardest feat in all of sports is hitting a baseball with a bat."

I must have missed those studies proving this. How does getting a hole in one in golf rank? Or, frankly, hitting a cricket ball off a fast bowler?

2002-03-18 05:09:59 PM
How does getting a hole in one in golf rank? Or, frankly, hitting a cricket ball off a fast bowler?

Well, not to split hairs, but a hole in one is the result of hitting a stationairy ball. Hitting a baseball in and of itself is considerably harder than hitting a golf ball. Achieving a hole in one is statistically more difficult.

I thought we were talking about team sports?

I just got back from ten days in London. Nice place, except for all the funny cars. A Limey explained Cricket to me in a pub. Makes sense, really. Don't know why they play it for three days, but it sounds kind of fun. I suspect a few hours spend drinking beer and batting with your buds would be a good Saturday afternoon.

Regarding xenophobic Americans:

I'm an American, and might be interested in cricket if I knew what it was about and how it worked. But I have yet to find anywhere a description of the game that doesn't already assume you're already familiar with it. Lots of reference type stuff, and minutiae-laden descriptions, but no good overview or summary. More Americans might appreciate cricket if someone would bother telling us what the hell it is, aside from "it's kinda like baseball, but not really".

And yes, hitting a baseball pitched by a major-league quality pitcher is one of the most difficult accomplishments in athletics. You'd be considered damn good if you had a consistent .300 batting average. When a success rate of 30 percent by lifelong professionals is treated as exceptional, you know it's gotta be pretty tough to do.

Just my opinion.

2002-03-18 05:13:45 PM
Crickett is played in 2 countries and that makes it global.

Hitting a baseball is the hardest task in sports? Why is baseball EVERY pros second sport, then?

Both are long boring games with too much time spent sitting or standing around.

Hey Hotdog, some of us over #10,000 appreciate irony, sarcasm, sardonic wit, black humour, juvenile humour, and so on. I only wish I had discovered Fark 25,000 account numbers ago!

Hotdog:

Not to split hairs, but you did say "the single hardest feat in all of sports is hitting a baseball with a bat". A hole in one is a feat, no?

Cricket - just one more sport the English invented, and then the rest of the world beat them at.

2002-03-18 05:17:12 PM
Contrary to general opinion here, cricket _is_ played in the USA (though not as widely as else where). The Usonan team won the America's Cup in Argentina last week, in fact, although the tournament was truncated somewhat due to heavy rain.

JoshSmenge, I would guess that hitting a baseball is still harder than hitting a fast-bowled cricket ball, largely because the cricket bat is wider and much flatter than the baseball bat.

I meant no offense to the more literate amongst the over 10K crowd. I do not usually pull any FARK seniority bs. I've been on the Internet ever since Al Gore invented it...:-)

2002-03-18 05:20:28 PM
The average MLB average is about .265. And about 80% of the outs are due to fielding rather than strikeouts.

It is in fact pretty easy for an MLB hitter to hit MLB pitching, but not to do it with the accuracy necessary to get the ball past MLB fielding.

But that contact with the ball comes after 5-10 pitches. But they get all those pitches.

The hardest thing to do in sports is kick a 64-yard field goal.

2002-03-18 05:22:38 PM
Jonclaude,

I play football (soccer) AND cricket for a club. Cricket is played with a heavy, rock-hard ball which could crack someone' skull easily. And I've played with fast bowlers who usually "throw" the ball at speeds above 80 MPH.

And Cricket is played in more then 2 countries.

2002-03-18 05:22:46 PM
Let's face it - the hardest feat in sports is picking a winning bracket in the Final Four pool.

2002-03-18 05:22:59 PM
Hotdog:

I'll say that hitting a change-up from Pedro Martinez (the way he threw them in say, '99) or Kerry Wood's '98 curve ball would be nearly impossible for even pro hitters.

But those in the know would quickly counter that Shoaib Akhtar bowling (not throwing) at around 100 mph is at least as difficult.

Having spent significant time around both sports, I can say it would be very interesting to see how each could contribute to the other's talent pool. Too bad there's such a large cultural gap.

This is just annoying, but then again, I know a few Brits and a lot of thisngs make perfect sense now.

Personally, since I saw that movie "The Crying Game " I get scared when someone mentions cricket. Cause the lady had a schlong.

The hardest thing to do in sports is kick a 64-yard field goal.

Only for the Buffalo Bills...;-)

Again, it's stationary. Anyone can kick a ball. Some can kick it 64 yards.

Anyone can hit a golf ball. Some manage to get a hole in one.

Not everyone can hit MLB pitching.

The hardest feat in professional sports is hitting a ping pong ball, because "it's moving." Anyone can hit a stationary object, but ping pong balls actually MOVE when your trying to hit them. It's like trying to hit something in the air that is actually changing position with respect to time(or MOVING as some people would say). Now you may think it's easy to hit a ping pong ball that's MOVING, but have you ever tried to hit a ping pong ball that was volleyed back at you at 100 MPH with front stroke english by a Major League Ping Pong Player? I think not! In fact hitting a MOVING ping pong serve from a MLPP player has been statistically proven time and time again as one of the toughest feats in all of sports. okay, that's enough. . .

Cricket explanation

Hope that helps. Actually it helped me a bit.

But since it's not played AT ALL in the USA, whereas football (not gridiron) is played some in the USA ... it's harder for me to care about cricket.

Here's another, more graphically oriented cricket simulator. It's worth a look, even if you're not a fan of the game.

Hitting a baseball is clearly the most difficult task in any sport. Just look at the numbers, you hit the ball 3 out of ten times your considered an all star. 30% success rate to be among the best. Thats just crazy.

This online game helped me understand why most people don't understand cricket.
