"...appears to have been a tiger"

He's dead, and you still can't examine him closely enough to clearly identify its species?

Further, if 'has been' was a tiger, it's pretty safe to say he probably still is a tiger. Just a dead tiger.

An elusive tiger that prowled through Ventura County near the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library was killed Wednesday morning in Moorpark, but its origin remains a mystery.

The tiger, weighing between 400 to 600 pounds, was sighted walking behind the houses and through the ravines approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Nearby is Miller Park, with well-used soccer fields.

According to Troy Swauger, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game, the tiger was spotted about 6:30 a.m. walking through the yard of the Tucker family.

"It was old and tired-looking. It was walking along our fence and then went to our next-door neighbor's yard," Mary Tucker said.

"It was just a weird thing to see him in our backyard," husband Ken Tucker said.

Authorities were called and fired four shots at the big cat. It was not known how many hit the animal, Swauger said.

Some critics questioned why the tiger was killed and not tranquilized.

"With all this time to track it and all these options they could draw on, you have to ask the question, was it really necessary to kill the tiger?" asked Madeline Bernstein, president of the Los Angeles branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Swauger defended the shooting.

"If the cat got out of the area, there's no telling what could have happened," he said. "Using a tranquilizer gun was an option that was available, but the safety of residents and motorists was of great concern."
Officials were investigating from where the tiger came, Swauger said. They will contact those having exotic pet permits in the area, but it is possible that the animal was illegal.

On Feb. 8, residents reported paw prints, setting off a series of warnings that a dangerous big cat was on the loose. By Feb. 15, officials said the print, about 6 inches at the pad, appeared to match other tracks found about eight miles away.

This is even better from yesterday's paper:

http://www.dailynews.com/Stories/0,1413,200~20954~2724792,00.html

"The sighting reported Monday of a large animal in a field between Highway 23 and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library was, in fact, a large boulder and not the 400-pound exotic cat that is believed to be loose in the area, officials said."

Hmmmmmm....a large cat, orange stripes...i can see the resemblance....

Worthless without pictures.

Somebody's pet, probably not old and tired, but more likely starved half to death.

They can easily eat 50 pounds of meat a day.

Gotta find the preek that kept (and starved) his tiger to make up for his teeny peeny.

..but I'm a little biased.

One article says it takes 5-10 minutes for the tranquilizer to kick in. That's about right for an intramuscular injection of a dose that's high enough to knock the tiger out but not high enough to kill it.

Now the tiger is going to feel the dart hitting it, and it's going to be VERY angry, frightened, and confused. For 5 to 10 minutes.

Ever see a housecat go absolutely batshiat? Ever try to DEAL with a housecat in that mode? Lots of people have scars from trying to detach their cat from a fishhook or something similar--we had a thread about this a few days ago.

Now take that and multiply it by, oh, 100 or so. Picture a 500-pound animal with VERY large teeth and claws going absolutely berserk in an inhabited neighborhood as it tries to get away from the Thing That Hurts. Remember, it can run 30 miles per hour and jump 8-10 feet or so.

I love animals, but I think they made the right decision in shooting the poor bastard.

2005-02-23 11:25:12 PM
I don't understand why the tiger wasn't tranquilized instead of being shot to death, same crap happened in Kentucky with some hard-on cop shot a family dog to death last year.

Another hard-on cop with a itchy trigger finger (did it smell like crap too?)

Don't forget - in order to get a tranq into any kind of animal without killing the poor thing - the velocity of the projectile is vital. Because of the density of the muscles of the animal your trying to tranquilize, and the deceleration of the projectile that will occur in the distance from the muzzle to the animal.

What does all this fancy talk mean? It means that to effectively get a dart into this animal, one would have to be within 15 - 20 yds max. I love cats, especially big cats. I wish more than anything, that places still existed on earth where these perfect predators could do their thing. But with 7 billion morons on the loose, and no sign of any horrible disease to put us in our place, that just will not happen. The cops made the right choice in this case by killing the animal. It was the safest thing for the pursuers of the cat, and the most humane thing for the animal itself. The BEST solution to this problem involves a number of things:

1st: stop fcuking with nature. Leave freaking tigers in India where they belong
2nd: Drop the atom bomb NOW. There are too many people on this planet, we need to return some of that space and those resources to the creatures if we wish to see more of them in the future.
3rd: Profit.

I was wondering as well why they didn't just tranquelize it. Thanks StevieP, having just read that thread a couple hours ago, I understand what you mean. But couldn't a drugged piece of meat worked too? I guess they just wanted the problem solved. Poor scared giant kitty.

Why the fark did these morans shoot the tiger? They could have just darted him and left him out in the wild, tigers are endangered enough as it is there was absolutely no need for these asshats to shoot this beautiful creature.

2005-02-24 11:42:06 AM
They shot him with a gun because a tranquilizer dart would take too long to take effect for an animal that large, and he was near a school and a park.

2005-02-24 12:45:53 PM
i grew up in the area and i can say with a fair amount of certainty that they saw a rare opportunity to kill a tiger and couldn't resist...

And shootoing bullets WON'T make a tiger angry????? All it would have taken is a slightly missed shot and you'd have an EXTREMELY angry AND hurt Tiger on the loose AND it wouldn't be going nightie-night in 5-10 minutes. FARKTARDS.

Use the cops to feed the poor animals at the Wildlife Waystation. They could use the free food. mmmmm soylent blue.

I'm no PETA activist by any means, but I really think that society treats animals like dirt and we really should be thinking hard about it. This poor cat needn't have been shot: I'm sure it was just a trigger happy cop dying to SHOOT A TIGER>....
