If everyone went to Europe for their car driving class, this wouldn't happen. By the Way....I am the first
2002-03-14 10:50:52 PM
That's what happens when you let women drive...

2002-03-14 10:53:05 PM
Really farking horrible... thanks for posting it.

That's what happens when you let southerners drive...

I agree with Yugo. I've always lived in southern California, but when I took a trip to Europe, I was amazed at how well drivers worked, and how well traffic flowed, with only two freeway lanes. True, there may be fewer cars there, but there are also no big-arse Suburbans being driven by 95 pound soccer moms, or enormous Lexus sedans being driven by yuppies who have no idea how to drive (and it seems that using turn signals is entirely out of fashion around here, I feel like I'm the only person that ever uses them anymore).

It's even worse here in Orange County, where the richer people are so used to their new, super-wide freeways that they have no accident-avoidance/courteous driving skills whatsoever... sigh...

2002-03-14 10:57:20 PM
How about the people who seem to think the turn signal tells the car which way to go? They fly at a turn full speed, at the very last second slam on the brakes and flip on the turn signal as they whip around.

why doesn't something that exciting be the cause of the traffic clogs on i75 when i goto tampa every month...but no..its just some dumbass with an rv towing a car, a boat, 4 jet skis, a jeep, and a giant ass grill..

2002-03-14 10:58:15 PM
Hmm, did a few snowflakes fall again? Seems those Georgians can't drive in "Harsh" winter weather :)
2002-03-14 11:00:13 PM
Damn Suburbans, Fulgore243 is right, It is a damn brick with two differentials and one never gets used...

Can you say: Cel-Phone.
2002-03-14 11:01:34 PM
At least there was a rig with car parts involved. Just unload the contents, fix the cars and get things moving again!

2002-03-14 11:04:52 PM
Well, nobody died, so it's funny, right? I suppose not, I've never heard of a pileup like that. Interesting sidenote, I-75 runs through my hometown of Flint, MI. In case anyone cares. :)
2002-03-14 11:06:37 PM
4 people died, Whodat?
Still, that's a pretty good ratio.. 4 people out of 125+ cars..
2002-03-14 11:11:02 PM
dude, wheres my car?

wheres your car, dude?
2002-03-14 11:16:06 PM

4 people died, jeeze, my bad. I must have missed that. Sorry, didn't mean to come off as a jerk. Thanks for pointing that out Albrot.

Family of no more......
2002-03-14 11:27:59 PM
i submitted this link (albeit from CNN) at like 3:00 this afternoon... but anyway, the cause of the accident was the 7 foot visibility fog
2002-03-14 11:28:09 PM
Did anyone read the story after looking at the picture of the smushed grey car? The woman had only MINOR injuries! Unreal!
2002-03-14 11:31:25 PM
Did anyone notice the big guy in the middle of this picture?

[image from too old to be available]

I think that's the same guy posted by Handenbramilton above... Only this one wasn't p-shopped.
2002-03-14 11:32:18 PM
lets take a minute for the four people and then two minutes to laugh at the insurance companies
2002-03-14 11:35:39 PM
Insurance companies are some of the biggest bastards on Earth. I'll take 10 minutes and raise four toasts, here's to putting the NAILS into Snake-Farm and Allsnake
2002-03-14 11:39:06 PM
and it wasnt even snowing or anything... i tell ya those people down south just dont know how to drive

FOG, dammit. Too fast in sudden low visability. The fog lays pretty thick in some places in the south, very thick.
2002-03-14 11:42:38 PM
From the article, they blamed the whole thing on fog, not driver error.

So, it wasn't that anybody was driving too fast in light of the poor visibility? Ever hear of leaving a safe following distance? How about driving attentively, especially in heavy traffic and poor visibility?

I'd bet money that people were barreling along at 80, with about a car length of separation. The first guy in line enters the fog and slows down...the second brakes harder...the third guy in line brakes even harder but can't avoid a collision...the semi right behind him jams his brakes and jacknifes...pileup ensues.

Cripes...125 cars...4 dead...dozens injured... were it not for the loose nuts behind the wheels, this could have been prevented.

2002-03-15 12:03:52 AM
I heard that they were so fearful of more wrecka that cars had to be restrained. Hence the bubba in FatMason's pic.
2002-03-15 12:57:27 AM
I read this from the article: "A widely circulated photograph shows a gray car sandwiched between two tractor-trailers. The woman driver had only minor injuries."
2002-03-15 01:00:12 AM
Who was playing the fast music?
2002-03-15 01:03:50 AM
I agree 100% with you, idiots trying to drive fast in poor conditions/not paying even paying attention.
2002-03-15 01:07:20 AM
I live in Ringgold. It usually takes 5 minutes to get home, today it took 20 minutes because of all the traffic.

Oh, and Debrcmj is correct in his/her analysis of the situation. The fog was THICK this morning and people still didn't slow down.
2002-03-15 01:18:17 AM
Damn. I'm glad I decided to forego my trip to the mall this morning. That would've put me right in thick of it. I-75 North is still closed I believe.

I think the 4 people dead is only because the _really_ dead people are still trapped under tractor trailers.

The story is a big ass Transfer Truck clipped the back of a passenger car and sent it flying across I-75 into the southbound lane. The Truck caused more wrecks as did the passenger car. Both sides got completely hosed.

Update: a Georgia radio station has admitted to playing Deep Purple's "Highway Star" at 45 rpm on the morning of the crash.
2002-03-15 01:53:04 AM
Huh? Safe driving in Europe? Has anyone ever been to Germany? Ahhhhhhhhhh!
2002-03-15 01:58:05 AM
This is farking scary. I had my first serious run-in last week when some white trash asshole pulled out of a parking lot and sideswiped me. The first thing he said to me was "Sorry, buddy, didn't see you." Now, because he can't drive, I have to wait for almost two weeks to get it fixed, thankfully at no cost to me. Plus, I'm not old enough to drive the rental. I swear being in a life or death situation like that is farked up.

Drunken milkman, driving drunk
Swerves on the curves

A flash!
A crash!
Milk and blood

I don't watch TV or listen to the news on radio so this is the first I've heard. I have friends who live in that area. I think I'll give them a call in the morning.

I can believe how quick something like this can move in. I was in central CA (San Joaquin Valley [sp?]) once when a fog bank came out of nowhere. Clear and sunny one minute, visiblity down to less than 20' the next and I don't mean I drove into it; it apparently formed out of nothing in less than a minute.
2002-03-15 04:54:23 AM
I have been to Atlanta, they drive like maniacs. obviously.
2002-03-15 08:11:33 AM
Everyday I experience GA residents... I am astounded by mental capacity...

You wanna know why 100 cars pile up? Because these shiatheads don't know what the "3 seconds of distance" rule is...

Don't feel sorry for these idiots the deserve it for tailgating!
2002-03-15 10:46:08 AM
Are you sure that's not a photo of the highway between Kuwait City and Baghdad?
2002-03-15 12:24:37 PM
Hurtcow, what is that?
2002-03-21 09:55:42 AM wanna know too....
