2002-03-14 01:12:39 PM
Ill bet that monkey with the wires coming out of his head would kick ass on Asteroids.

2002-03-14 01:12:59 PM
Damn, we are sitting ducks in the galaxy without that guy.

Someone alert Homeland Security, we need to find the Missile Defense champion STAT!

2002-03-14 01:14:11 PM
The problem happened when his cat split into four smaller cats and he couldn't save all of them himself.

2002-03-14 01:14:15 PM
Aw...sad.

2002-03-14 01:14:50 PM
What a shame! But he died a world champ.

I'm less interested in his score than the socialogical implications: how long did he play THAT specific game? Maybe that's why no DATE was given--it took him November, 1982 to do it....

2002-03-14 01:15:14 PM
Did anyone else see the ad in this article which featured a cat? Why do they always fark up ad placement?

2002-03-14 01:16:15 PM
cliche kitty was to blame.

2002-03-14 01:16:29 PM
My dad had Asteroids once.. couldn't sit down for a week

2002-03-14 01:16:53 PM
I knew people that could play asteroids infinitely. The only limitation was sleep. I can't count the # of times I've walked away from a Galaga machine after playing for >6 hours and still going. I wonder what the criteria is for world champion cause I've seen many.

2002-03-14 01:18:26 PM
This is sad on so many levels...

1) that anyone would spend so much time on Asteroids that they could work up that kind of score

2) that that's the high point of anyone's obituary

3) that anyone would die trying to save a cat from anything

4) that numbers 1-3 all apply to the same person

5) that there are people who think so highly of someone who fits the description in #4 that they would spend years searching for said person -- and then award his medal posthumously to his little sister.

I need to rest now.

SpaceCoyote : HAR HAR that was funny.

He was a hero to us all. Let's hold a moment of silence for the fallen destroyer of killer rocks from space...

What?

The search didn't end tragically. It just ended after discovering a tragedy. The guys life ended tragically but that was long before the search.

2002-03-14 01:21:42 PM
Falling off the roof saving a cat? How would you like to tell St. Pete that? He'd laugh and send you back to do something a little more impressi... HEY!!!! Eternal life! Just keep dying doing stupid things!

Guy calls home from vacation and asks how things are going.
His brother says "Your cat died."
The guy is shocked and asks how it died and his brother says it was run over by a truck.
The guy says "That's terrible but you should never break news like that so abruptly and with the truth! You should have said 'he was up on the roof chasing a squirrel when he fell off'".
The brother says "Well Ok, I'll keep that in mind.'
Vactioning guys gets over his shock and asks "How's mom?"
Brother says "Well, she was up on the roof chasing a squirrel..."

2002-03-14 01:21:55 PM
"All those things I can do, all those POWERS, and I couldn't even save him."

2002-03-14 01:22:25 PM
So does this I am the new champion?

2002-03-14 01:23:15 PM

2002-03-14 01:24:46 PM
Holy smokes, I remember when he set that record.....

2002-03-14 01:24:51 PM
I would have been the Champion of Asteriods if MTV did not go on the air! Man I miss the 80's!

2002-03-14 01:25:21 PM
Would anyone mind posting a transcript?

I can't access it. Is it getting farked already?

2002-03-14 01:25:49 PM
Crippling carpal-tunnel made him loose his grip on the gutter.

2002-03-14 01:26:22 PM
Good point Out Of Bounds.
I'm going to try and beat the record though just to add to the "tragedy".

2002-03-14 01:26:29 PM
Who has that boring of a life to search for someone who won a game 20 years ago

2002-03-14 01:26:47 PM
What's really weird is that I submitted a completely different article concerning the game Asteroids today....

2002-03-14 01:27:16 PM
Hey..didn't Ben Stiller play him in a movie? Something with a cat on the roof? Maybe not

2002-03-14 01:29:19 PM
I also remember when MTV actually showed "videos".

Now all we get is the suck-ass Real World, TRL, and other assorted bullshiat.

2002-03-14 01:29:43 PM
like the great musicans, god take the great gamers out while they are young.
:( sad

This will be the first movie on the Lifetime/TechTV crossover network.

2002-03-14 01:30:37 PM
"Walter Day of the Twin Galaxies Intergalactic Scoreboard doubts Safran's record will ever be beat and plans to award a posthumous medal to the champ's younger sister."

The family should have the award mounted on his tombstone, it'd be a lot better than those stupid stone angels and shiat that people usually have.

My favourite tombstone inscription is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "Buffy Anne Summers: beloved sister, devoted friend. She saved the world a lot."

2002-03-14 01:32:06 PM
I thought it was sad that they started the search almost a decade after he had already died.

2002-03-14 01:32:59 PM
Did he fall . . . or was he pushed?

Someone should be looking for the holder of #2 high score on Asteroids.

2002-03-14 01:34:42 PM
Crap, who'll save us from Xur and the Kodan armada now??

2002-03-14 01:35:10 PM
Sitting at the Asteroids machine

Good God almighty what a toad I was

2002-03-14 01:35:35 PM
Reminds me that we do not use the word "joystick" enough anymore

2002-03-14 01:35:51 PM
Man, am I bored...

2002-03-14 01:37:24 PM
I would end my life too to save Cliche Kitty!

2002-03-14 01:41:06 PM
that took WAY lokger than I expected for Cliche Kitty to appear. you guys are slipping.

Chicken Tasing Man - freakin' hilarious. great use of all the necessary elements :o)

2002-03-14 01:41:07 PM
I love my cat, and I understand. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't outright sacrifice myself to save her, but I would put myself into a dangerous situation (like climbing onto a roof) to do so.

It's too bad the guy's dead, but at least he'll be remembered, if only by the geeks...

2002-03-14 01:47:11 PM
Poor guy, can you imagine as his life flashed before his eyes a great percentage of it was in Vector format.

I wonder if he died knowing he was at the top of his game?

What the hell took them so long to track him down?? I mean if the company had been on it's toes about the time line leading to his death would have changed, and he may have never died.

Sounds like a good law suit to me. What's his sister's name?

2002-03-14 01:53:10 PM
Wow, he set that world record only miles from where I type this message. I feel pride in my county!

2002-03-14 01:55:48 PM
Its not sad that the guy is dead...Maybe it was in 1989...but damn...that was 13 years ago.

2002-03-14 01:56:33 PM
also...how the hell do you "save" a cat from being on a roof...I think that the cat would probably be able to get down himself.

2002-03-14 01:58:04 PM
Game Over.

But at least he got his quarter's worth.

2002-03-14 01:59:33 PM

I'm gonna beat it! I'm gonna beat it!

2002-03-14 01:59:42 PM
DarkJohnson made me laugh and that photoshop was FANTASTIC hehehehehreally funny tooo - keep it up : )

2002-03-14 02:01:34 PM
Wow. I dunno know why, but that IS really sad. I haven't been this depressed by the news in years.

2002-03-14 02:03:17 PM
I used to know how to play Q'Bert to where the machine would overheat and perform a restart.

It only took an hour or so. I wonder if that bug (overheating) was ever reported to the manufacturer?
