Them not wanting their employees to talk MUST mean they have something to hide... I call a meeting of the conspiracy theorists!

Anyone else notice that whether or not he violated the policy in the first place, he violated it right after, by telling the media about what happened? And them enforcing their rule on a harmless case that the rule wasn't meant to protect against caused a situation that the rule WAS meant to protect against?

Irony nazis, is this enough to be called ironic?

/wonders if the guy will go to the media again when he gets a second suspension for this time...

No Such agency

Went to the link (and now I'm probably on a watch list or something).

And what's worse, is the slop on the main page. I alternated between disgust at such ignorant hate, and laughter at such stupidity. I mean, as a white male, I can't say I feel I am a minority, nor have I known any children dragged from thier homes to live in multicultural ones...etc. To top it off, some of it does not even make sence grammatically, let logically.

/Senses the american nazi party is not exactly composed of the best and the brightest, thankfully.

You are, my friend, a fascist dickhead.
Just my opinion.

The rules are rules because WE allow them to be. Even the behavior corporations expect employees to follow can easily be changed by a simple law.

To not question rules and just mindlessly follow them is the sort of mindset that let's fascism rise.

Well, there's always AmVets. No wait, they only want new stuff. Hey, I can take my old paperbacks to Half Price Books.. oh yeah, the price they give isn't worth the gas it takes to get there.
I'll just keep adding to the landfill.

\screw your children's future.

I agree, if you work for less than $10 an hour, you are not very intelligent. And no matter what you do, or how much you make, follow the rules, it's not that hard.

everyone REREAD you dummys the outsourced to india guy misrefrenced everything.

first off he is not mentally challenged except

"He said he works odd jobs but hasn't felt up to it lately because of migraine headaches and bronchitis."

unless you count beinga 61 year old computer tech retarded i would call it premature...

also HE DID NOT TALK TO THE MEDIA PER THE REPORTER

I think this is bs, first off any one who makes 7.25 deserves pity.

add to that the fact they were working for goodwill +10 pity points

add to that that they COULD have retired another +25 pity points

add to that that he DROVE FOR A HOUR TO DO IT EACH WAY, and PROBABLY 2 hours considering how old men drive when they are going to work at goodwill.

So he gets my F-YOU GOODWILL!!!!! I will give other ways!!

(but wait one more old man off the roads?)

"Joe Stover, Goodwill's vice president of human resources and organizational development, said that an investigation showed that Gibson was interviewed and gave a statement to someone he knew was a reporter. But the company did not ask Gibson what happened, nor the reporter who wrote the story, freelance journalist Monica Young."

Now that's what I call an investigation. What did they do, use some of that Whatever Technology that CTU has on 24?

Sad story. I feel bad for this poor elderly guy who still has to work for a living and makes less than $8 an hour off a 20+ mile commute.

Man - never have the much-touted red/blue or right/left lines been clearer to me than in this thread - The "life-was-easy-for-me-so-why-don't-you-pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps" morons are about the lowest form of life on the planet. This guy got screwed, and any person that would value a company's policy over the subsistence wage of another man is a fool and a heartless bastard to boot.

You, sir, are a complete ass.
I'd like to see you say that to any of this countrie's foodservice/menial sales people.

I want you to go out to Olive Garden, go shopping at any mall or grocery store, go fill up your tank with gas, and order a pizza from Domino's. Everyone you will deal with makes under $10, and took that job by choice.

You're suggesting I'll get banned for posting information I found on two major directory listing pages and suggesting that some people TAKE ACTION. How pointless and pathetic are those who just inanely rant thier useless opinions on forums and blogs without doing anything real. That empty punditry is part of what makes a farce like what happened in Kernersville possible. Wake up.

/forums like this have power. and potential for good.

redTiburon -
Ha! I worked for Half Price Books years ago - that's got to be the biggest rip-off around. I hope you'll all avoid that place as much as possible -plus they cut employee benefits once the company started to get bigger so they could cover advertising costs. Quite lame.

And, yes, Parrothead is an ass, but, admittedly, one of my best friends works at Domino's and pulls in over $20 an hour - a hell of a lot more than I make doing a dress-shirt 9-6 job. But, ultimately, the basic concept of capitalism is that every time you make a dollar someone else loses one - Every guy who's making $6 an hour is directly related to (and getting screwed by) the jerk-offs on this site who are pulling in 6 figures.

Well, then they are not very smart, and surely are not college educated. I mean edjumucated. $10 an hour is $400 BEFORE taxes... how can you even justify living on that??? Umless you work mass overtime, then that's just crappy. Here's an idea... get off your lazy I wanna go out and party and work in a resturant/gas station/ whatever ass, and go to school ( real college, not ITT tech) and do something that will benefit you and society. And something that a trained monkey can't do.
/Not that I have anything against them.

Those who say it's okay for a company to suspend an employee for talking to the media... fine. But this guy was merely photographed. It was an assistant manager who was interviewed and then LIED about not knowing she was talking to a reporter. She talked to a STRANGER on the phone for HALF AN HOUR and she didn't know it was a reporter? AND she okayed the photos. That she was NOT suspended and the dupe who got photographed WAS is farking ridiculous. But it figures. Management-types always wipe each other's ass.

Are you really trying to tell me that waiters, gas station workers, pizza delivery guys, victoria secret ( that's what your wife/girlfriend... er i mean people with educations that can get a wife/ girlfriend wear) are smart? Really? $400 a week is half a car payment, for one person, not to mention the wife's.... oh yeah I forgot, women aren't attracted to $8 an hour workers....

2005-02-04 12:27:02 AM
Beernut, you're funny.

Questioning authority is the reason why the U.S. even
exists. Questioning authority brought about women's
sufferage and the civil rights movement.

But don't let that stop you from a conformist lockstep
lifestyle. If you don't have any questions to ask,
you aren't paying attention.

Parrothead:

Care to give a scholarship? Some of them HAVE gone to college or are going. The guy in the article used to work in the tech sector, for fark's sake. So did many people I know before the mass layoffs caused our local telcom and tech sectors to nosedive. I knew guys who were making $45k a year suddenly have to get server jobs to get by for a while. And they weren't party-mongers either.

I understand your point: If you can't help yourself, don't expect us to help you. You over-generalize though.

/just sayin

uhm, yep... from the posting guidelines:

Aside from "not safe for work" posts, the following are also unacceptable:

encouraging people to call someone on the phone

Messages containing public OR private information: We are aware that most of this information can be found using Whois, or Google, or a phone book - however, posts containing email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, credit card numbers, etc. are not allowed.

Uhhh, lots of people hold minimum wage jobs who are highly educated. College students working during school/summer break because their parents have problems paying tuition/expect a sense of common decency out of them. I know a woman at the Bath and Body Works I work at sometimes who is a teacher and sells lotion on the side because it's something different and more fun than dealing with kids.

Well that does it, then. Game, set, match. I can respect that. Fark.com surely doesn't need undue retribution.

But disgusting? Please. Stupid, maybe. I regret not reading the posting guidelines, but I stand by my motives.

2005-02-04 12:41:30 AM
ok parrothead

Not all poor people are stupid. Someday you will meet a first generation immigrant, and notice he's doing his/her very best to succeed in life. Or, you will meet someone who simply grew up with zero resources to promote whatever potential they had to succeed. Maybe you're just being a mean bastard online because it's "okay", nobody's going to know you're a complete bastard. Certainly not the janitor at your workplace. But you, sir, disgust me as a part of the human race.

2005-02-04 12:48:56 AM
Amazing how some people here are really piling on those
with minimum wage jobs. That's how most people live folks.

27% of Americans have degrees.
This means that most people do NOT have the qualifications
to work at salaried jobs with health insurance.

Hopefully karma will knock some of you down a couple pegs.
At least then you can see how the MAJORITY of Americans live.

2005-02-04 12:51:37 AM
Correction: Not minimum wage jobs. I was referring rather to lower hourly.

/Don't need hear some wiseass playing literal word games.

Anyone else notice that Goodwill and Salvation Army have all sorts of cool, vintage stuff high up on a display shelf with "not for sale" signs, and pretty much glean out anything of value to antique dealers before it ever hits their shelves?

2005-02-04 01:19:32 AM
Median salary for a private first class (E3) in the US Army is around $17,000 a year. That's about $8 an hour. So are the majority of soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq and doing one of the most noble and difficult jobs on Earth just fat and lazy slobs? Women aren't attracted to them? They should get off thier asses? Hmmmm...

America was built by the sweat and blood of the common worker. If we forget that, we are well and truly farked.

2005-02-04 01:24:50 AM
...that was intended for my own countrymen/women. Respect to all those who are not of the USA. Be well.

/realized this is an international forum

PARROTHEAD:

ah, yes. The old ad holmium attack. Very good. You negate my point by suggesting that I work for $8 an hour. You, my friend, are a very cunning linguist.

I do not work for eight dollars an hour, but nearly three times that. I am doing quite well for myself.

I have gone to college to earn a degree, and my hard work has paid off for me. Some people, however, are not as lucky as myself (I have had quite a bit of financial help in getting my degree, that I am extremely grateful for).

Despite this, I am grateful for the services minimum-wage workers provide for me. I tip well. I guess this is what seperates you from myself.

Toleraen: What are some other reasons? [to dislike Goodwill]

I worked as a volunteer at one for a while, maybe it's different in other parts of the country, but certainly not at any of the dozen others in the area. I got to know them all well back when I built my book collection.

Go into a GoodWill store and ask yourself, where is all of the good stuff? Certainly people donate more to them than old Tupperware and Christmas Records, right? You bet they do. They bring it in by the semi-load every day.

What you never find at a Goodwill are things like musical instruments or antiques. The stuff of real value is siphoned off right at the loading dock and given to "the owners", who don't work there but come in to pick up their haul every day. One employee talked about the time he took a piano to their house. He said their place was full of stuff. They also had a storage space nearby.

The managers claimed that the stuff was sold at auction. I said wow, where is this auction? Sign me up now. They said that it was a private auction, and yeah, it's held in another state, and we don't even know where. It was clear to me that "the owners" were up to no good. "The owners" and their kids were living the very good life, from the look of their expensive clothes and their top tier automobiles. A far cry from the loobies in the corner about to finally get the weed whip to work, with disastrous results, but, I digress.

I can't get any details from their website about who actually owns the stores, they seem curiously circumspect about it. I found a story where Microsoft donated 1.3mil to "Goodwill Industries of Appalachia" or some other, regional sounding, name.

I'll tell you this, there is 100x the money flowing off of the dock and on to "the owners'" house than is being sold through the store. At that one store, in the few weeks that I volunteered there, I probably saw a half million dollars in antiques, furniture and musical instruments alone go into the "owners" van.

Technically speaking, this siphoning doesn't breach their stated mission - to teach loobies how to sort clothes. But the impression they are careful to make is that they sell what you donate. People donate pianos and other things believing that it will help somebody, not become part of a racket.

I know I'm entering this a bit late, but....
Questioning authority may not be "hip" in your eyes, but sometimes it is right. Rosa Parks should have moved when the white man told her to. MLK should have stopped marching because the police told him so. Questioning authority is wrong, after all.

And I know, you sould have rules at work. But Goodwill suspended him for making a statement to a reporter without asking him or the reporter if he actually made a statement. He wasn't quoted in the article. He just had his picture taken. But the assitant manager who actually did make a statement, in violation of the policy? Of course he or she wasn't disciplined.

Finally, how many people do you think work at a place with policies that they never heard of? Especially people who work for under $8 an hour? As far as I can tell, he got his picture taken while he was loading a truck, but got suspended for talking to the press. An assitant manager (who is not the named referal in the company policy) actually talked to the reporter and was not disciplined. It certainly seems like this guy is not being treated fairly.

First we get to hate the people that TEMPORARILY sacked the old dude, and then we get to hate the people that sympathize with him, and THEN we get to hate the people that hate the people that sympathize. Oh and then the odd couple of people that find a way to hate people that make a lower wage.

Has anybody else noticed fewer and fewer donation sites? There used to be big yellow metal boxes that donations could be slipped into, and they were all over the place. Now I only know of one in my area - 30 minutes away. They really want us to go to the store and donate during business hours now. I figure its a combination of theft, people donating garbage, and people leaving big crap like matresses on the ground nearby. Any thoughts?
