Unless they were actually inside the store, the photographer didn't need his permission to take or run the photograph.

2005-02-03 06:41:34 PM
....didn't need ANYBODY'S permission to run the photo.

2005-02-03 06:48:15 PM
Just another reason not to give to Goodwill.

2005-02-03 08:11:28 PM
What are some other reasons?

F%$# what the article says, I can't believe that this isn't illegal.

2005-02-03 08:32:54 PM
Can't we all contact the Goodwill store and get this guy his job back, like we did with that amateur meteorologist?

2005-02-03 08:35:19 PM
Aren't Goodwill employees retarded? What kind of jackasses suspend a retarded person who was probably taken advantage of by someone? Still, the company is fully within their right since what he did _does_ violate policy.

Gibson, 61, said he graduated from Pine Hall High School, then from Rockingham County Community College, where he studied information-systems technology, at age 55.

Hahahahahah. Yet another one of those dumbasses who thought "oooh, computers means high pay!"... Sorry grandpa, but companies want young, mushy 20 year old college graduates that they can push around. They don't want some senior citizen who is set in his ways already and has no actual IT experience. What a waste of tuition.

He said he works odd jobs but hasn't felt up to it lately because of migraine headaches and bronchitis.

Whine, whine, whine. Boo hoo. This is one of those selfish asshole babyboomers who is going to suck us dry on social security, because they didn't plan ahead and didn't want to work hard enough to prepare for their future.

Zero sympathy. Go jump off a bridge.

2005-02-03 08:35:38 PM
He drives 26 miles to Kernersville from his home in Pine Hall to get to his job.

For $7.78 an hour?! Talk about a violation.

Are you farking nuts? An employer is absolutely within their rights to say "all media inquiries are to be referred to management/corporate - DO NOT SPEAK TO THE MEDIA".

My employer is a Forbes 100 company and if I gave interviews with regard to my company without their permission, I'd be either repremanded or flat-out fired. And justifiably so. Policy is policy and corporations can't have all 100,000 of their employees out speaking on behalf of the corporation to every jackass reporter in the world.

Too bad they can't outsource his job to a phone center in NOrth Dakota for $5.10/hr.

I propose that we all sneak into the CEO or manager or whatever he(or she) is called these days, and take pictures of them in compromising positions.

That would be a blast.

/I choose not to read the article, because I am the 'human devel'

2005-02-03 08:42:08 PM
Thats pretty cruddy for them to do. I cant help but wonder if there was not some other reason they wanted him gone, and used that as an excuse?

But, based on whats in the story, those folks at that Goodwill suck.

Don't let this stop you from giving to Goodwill though!

/gives and shops at goodwill occasionally
//found that the Salvation Army store in south Louisville is extremely proud of anything in its store....I could buy the stuff cheaper at Wal Mart.
///have been wanting to rant about that Salvation Army store for a long time, so I snuck it in this string :P

Shiat, I'd outsource Outsourced to India to India too. Zero sympathy for the retarded, after all.

If anyone is pissed off at their management about this, here's the page to send your emails:

Gotta love the Assistant Manager getting out of it because she claimed she didn't know it was a reporter....and even if she did, who the fark cares? Not like they were doing an expose on the store or anything, its good publicity! Grrrrr.

I_Hate_Iowa...

True, but in groups of less than six it is considered appropriate to ask!

(just a habit I have found out about)

"His managers told him that he was being suspended for five days without pay - he earns $7.78 an hour - for violating the company's media policy. Employees are not supposed to talk to the media"

"Still, the company is fully within their right since what he did _does_ violate policy.

"But the company did not ask Gibson what happened, nor the reporter who wrote the story, freelance journalist Monica Young.

Young said she did not interview Gibson. She said she obtained all the information for the story during a telephone interview with an assistant manager at the Kernersville store.

"Donald Gibson just agreed to having his picture taken,'' Young said. "He never gave me a statement."

OtI you are an ass...

See, I TOLD you St Vinny's was way cooler.
They have more 8-tracks, too.

Dear Outsourced_to_India,

Haha. You're a total douchebag. I think that's really funny.

Sincerely,

P.S. - Rot in Hell.

Outsourced_to_India: My employer is a Forbes 100 company

How long has your company been hiring the mentally challenged? Were you the first? You think you know everything?

Arrogant pricks should be the first killed in the revolution.

2005-02-03 08:47:46 PM
I already complained.. this is bogus, and for the reporter to admit they lied when they claimed the ass. manager did not know they were talking to a reporter and they still did nothing to them.. that's whack.. F Goodwill.

2005-02-03 08:50:36 PM
Outsourced to India: Re-read the article. He didn't give an interview to the media.

Not asinie. The company had a policy and he violated it. If the guy had any common sense he wouldn't be working for 7.78 an hour.

2005-02-03 08:57:02 PM
BeerNut that was the most offensive thing I have ever read on Fark.

If the guy had any common sense he wouldn't be working for 7.78 an hour.???

PLEASE tell me I missed your sarcasm....PLEASE!

2005-02-03 08:57:26 PM
The guy is 55 years old, and has a job doing something he likes.. if you had any common sense you would not post comments like that.. :) Seriously, the goodwill needs their asses kicked over this one.

2005-02-03 08:58:19 PM
BeerNut:

Asshole? Troll? Both? You decide. RTFA you repug twat.

Maybe he should host a "Bonfire" sales at Goodwill on his last day at the job.

2005-02-03 09:01:07 PM
I bought a chipped University of Georgia jelly jar, "In the Trenches" by Reggie White, some book by George Plimpton about football and 1930s medical texts from a GoodWill about 40 miles west of this one. It was a great experience. I think total it cost something like 5 bucks. Sucks this guy got canned.

2005-02-03 09:01:47 PM
I'm going to be driving 16 miles for 8.32 an hour. Oh and I'm way past 'entry' level....

Does that make me a moran?

That makes you a human being making ends meet. Some people just don't understand reality bro.

In North Carolina, "employees just don't have a lot of rights," said Hazel Mack-Hilliard, the senior managing attorney with Legal Aid Services of North Carolina in Winston-Salem. "It just sounds to me like there's something else going on.... I don't hear anything illegal, it's just unfair, and those are two different things."

Wow hats off to Hazel here. She must be a terrorist. She's clearly trying to undermine our countries society of victims that the legal system built on.

On and ignore the troll people. You know who I'm talking about and he's just a troll. Move on.

/rant over

Kernersville makes fark! Hooray! We'll party at Prissy Polly's BBQ tonight!

2005-02-03 09:07:23 PM
These policies are retarded. As a member of the media, I can say that we almost never try and get the low man on the totem pole at a company to say something that makes the place look bad. We just want some fluff bullshiat quotes to fill in a story (as the case would have been here), or information on an incident that the PR people didn't see, and won't tell the truth about anyway.

2005-02-03 09:08:32 PM
Even Goodwill has resorted to screwing people over?... that's it, the time is coming ...

2005-02-03 09:08:43 PM
sadly, not donating to goodwill is hurting the people Goodwill HELPS.
This is a sucky situation where they could say "Fine, I DARE you not to donate. Hurt the less fortunate by spiting us"

I'll still donate but it still sucks. And a strongly worded letter is still in the works. Oh, and BeerNut is still an ass.

2005-02-03 09:10:40 PM
I think I'll be adding to the e-mail deluge to Goodwill.

/What a bunch of jerkoffs.

2005-02-03 09:12:42 PM
I guess Goodwill's good will doesn't apply to their employees?

2005-02-03 09:13:23 PM
Is "Goodwill" another term for NAZI?

Punish Goodwill by not donating to them.

If it's hurting people, then it's Goodwill's fault, not yours.

Don't get caught in the kind of illogical reasoning that whines, "you'd be hurting the people Goodwill HELPS". Again, it's Goodwill shooting themselves in the foot that hurts people. I wouldn't give money to a terrorist.

2005-02-03 09:19:15 PM
For the most part a company can make any policy they want to. Recently there was a story about a company in Michigan that requires their workforce to be nonsmokers. If you can't accept the policys of a company don't work for them.

The only trolls are the immature kids that post here. It isn't hip, trendy or cool to question authority. Grow up or live in your parents basement for the rest of your lives.

2005-02-03 09:19:51 PM
wait, I'm illogical and whining because I still want to help people despite Goodwill's asinie policies??

/You just made the list, pal. You lay any of your meathooks on my stuff....and I kill ya

2005-02-03 09:21:36 PM
no, it's a troll who says "If the guy had any common sense he wouldn't be working for 7.78 an hour"

And I would move out of my mother's basement, but I'd have to ask my wife and 2 kids permission first

Yeah... never question authority... Heil Hitler... 60 years later

Y'know, it's employers like this that make me wonder why the US can't get a proper social-democrat party going outside of Vermont and perhaps Massachusetts.

2005-02-03 09:26:32 PM
goodwill is a shiatty company to work for.
/worked in rehab admin for 2 yrs.
