I live in Richmond, VA, and we have one of the higher murder rates in the country.

I go jogging late at night, downtown, and have never had a bit of trouble.

In general, most people that get shot or attacked are associating with criminals in the first place.

There are the random attacks, as there are anywhere in the world, but they're the exception rather than the rule.

JG I'm not saying it's better than anywhere else, I'm just saying, when compared to expenses elsewhere, it's not as bad as everyone seems to think it is.

As for not owning a car being unamerican... that doesn't even make sense.

Second, this crime is indeed getting the press it is because it's a white chick that got shot. People get shot every day in major metro areas, only the white victims get press coverage. I'm not specifically judging this situation in America, nor its implications, I'm just stating this as fact.

Third, many people who have moved into NYC in the last few years seem to be under the impression that they can wander around the city like its their backyard in whatever midwestern suburban enclave they were spawned in. This is a very dangerous situation. An aquaintance of mine who hails from the Bronx put it perfectly when he said (loosely) "I can see it in the way these people walk around". Meaning, they don't perceive that not too long ago the Towerblock city wasn't a Disney wonderland.

Fourth. Chances are you're not tough. Chances are you will never be tough and when confronted with REAL tough you have but a split second to make the decision on whether chancing your life on 'saving face' is worth it. I'm not talking about a home invasion in some suburban enclave, its easy enough to shoot a perp that has entered into your domicile, I'm talking about those cats walking down the street towards you who make that scary demand. I'm a juvenile probation officer. This kid almost definately way beyond any kind of meaningful reform and in my opinion should be Darwined, but he is a product of his society. I should have said that guns are good for home defense, not defense out in public. Additionally, I strongly disagree with it being illegal to keep a loaded weapon by your bed.

If you live in a high-crime area, and are currently unable to move elsewhere, I see nothing wrong with keeping a loaded shotgun by the bed. I own a shotgun, but I don't keep it loaded, basically because I feel secure where I live. If I didn't feel secure, I'd sure as hell keep it loaded.

This is the rationalization supports it. I do think that fear and hate are often the motivation. (Get them before they get you...) Also this sort of behaviour seems to result because you hold your own goals above those around you. This is why I say it results from a failure to love your neighbors as yourself. Is this two ways of seeing the same thing or do you see a difference?

Yeah, that's pretty much the case. They aren't releasing any additional copies for a while, and there's an unsubstantiated rumor that Blizzard actually recalled quite a few copies from the stores.

The upside is that the majority of the downtime has been for hardware upgrades and the downtime has been coming more and more infrequently.
