I know why the population is lowering..
damn women arent staying at home anymore..

they are out in the workforce (making less than us men..and rightfully so) and not being the stay-at-home parents they should be. they need to be making pies and cakes for their men. If there were more women at home making dinner -on time- then there'd be less fast food consumed and the world would be "less fat".
Also, by not having a continual home presence, the kids raise themselves on candy, MTV, and the Cartoon Network-where violence is all over.

2005-01-27 11:05:52 AM
it's because the world is getting richer. people no longer need 6 kids to help around the farm. and richer societies means more opportunities for women, so they can hold off on having kids.

You can never be underpopulated of the following Farkers:

I think China and India will step up and fill the gap. Europe is being repopulated via Immigration.

So is the US via Latin America and elsewhere.

No worries.

Underpopulation? Please. Until we have scenes from Omega Man with entire cities being abandoned, there will be no such thing as underpopulated.

New headline tomorrow

"Global Warming was just a hoax"

2005-01-27 11:14:33 AM
This is not a problem. We absolutely have to reach negative population growth. Do people think we can keep growing forever? If the population grows at just 6% per year, in only 10 years the population doubles. Overpopulation is absolutely a problem, and there are only a few ways of dealing with it. Every vote against just not having kids is a vote FOR disease, war, and famine, because those are the other ways.

Ask Rush Limbaugh about that.

ZeNemo: "Global Warming was just a hoax"

In the 70s everyone was screaming about an impending ice age so forgive me if I don't rely on climatologists. besides we've only been tracking weather scientifically for 100 years its not like we have a good picture of where the climate has been in the past anyway. maybe we are just going through a normal cycle.

2005-01-27 11:29:57 AM
Do people think we can keep growing forever

why not? worldwide population density is only about 100 people per square kilometer. lots of places not populated yet. we can also expand into space, on the belt, on mars, on jovian moons. more people means more brains to figure out the problems facing us in teh future.

2005-01-27 11:51:19 AM
These god damn liberals. First its global cooling, now its global warming. First it's overpopulation, now it's underpopulation. Hey morons: You can't just strait-line current trends and assume they go on for ever.

Hey, since I woke up this morning the temperature has risen 10 degrees. If this trend continues, we'll ll be dead by tomorrow!!

Not the way the spanish-speaking immigrants breed in my state it isn't.

2005-01-27 11:53:08 AM
more people means more brains to figure out the problems facing us in teh future.

It also means fewer resources with which to do things. Who says we can expand into space? We can't even keep a friggin' space station with two people supplied with food and oxygen yet.

Besides, I agree with Dogbert. I think there's a finite amount of intelligence in the world, and the more people you get, the stupider the average person becomes. :)

The birth rate may not be keeping up, but more people are surviving past their first birthday, and people are living longer.

Most likely, the average age of death for the baby boomers will go up from the current 75 or so to 90.

Also, longevity is due to increase dramatically in the next 50 years, due to genetic engineering, advances in medicine, and a better understanding of what causes aging.

So, Malthus is still right, but for a different reason than he anticipated.

Didn't you know that a new ice age will happen because of global warming...It's being called the "Making ice cubes in the oven" theory.

Yes, underpopulation could indeed be a problem if people keep falling off the sdges of this flat earth we live on.

But I guess you can overgeneralize the science, hide your head in the sand and blame the liberals.

But, don't worry, Jesus will save you.

By 2030 75% of the Arab world will be under the age of 15. By 2050 the Arab world's population will explode to over 600 million with another 300 million in Pakistan alone. This will occur just when the oil gives out.

Of course by then we'll have shoulder fired portable WMDs so the sorting-out of this is bound to be incredibly loud and bloody.

Gee, no mention of AIDS wiping out entire generations of breeding-age populations in dozens of countries. But I'm sure that's just a minor factor.

we need to expand our thinking, our expectations. we may be the only intelligent life in the universe. it's there for our taking. if we wanted to go into space, we could. we know how already. it may take hundreds of years to get going, but that ain't long.

or we can continue looking at our feet and stay on earth, never to leave like the hairless apes we are.

This only works if we go to a Logan's Run type society where we kill people the minute they become more trouble then they bring in. You cannot have a clean break from one generation to another without a fresh generation behind the current one. All social systems will collapse. Ask Italy and France and the Netherlands about this. They have already done the math and they have programs to try to get people to have children again.

Right on, so sick of all this doom abd gloom junk science. But its the gospel truth to the left. Each decade we hear about how we will all be dead and the Earth will be a barren waste land in under 10 years and its all humanities fault. And speaking of junk science remember that book that has unquestionable proof that the world would end in 1982, The Jupiter Effect? Ha what a joke that was.

Oh for all the global warming mongers, Mars and Jupiter are also warming. Damn aliens and their SUVs right? Bushiatler and his Haliburtan/Zionist overlords? Or could it be that big ball of light called the sun putting out major energy fluctuations?

Sorry for the rant, just so sick of all this "humans will kill us all" BS.

Malthus probably created the most attractive sophomoric theory in history. It still fools otherwise intelligent people to this day. About 20 minutes in a good economics class is all most people need to get over it though.

Man, imagine if Bush had lost, and both legislatures were Democrat - majority ruled. Would your head explode like the guy in Scanners ?

It doesn't matter if it is humanity doing it or not. The avergae temperature of the earth IS rising. Just ask the polar bears.

We have to deal with it regardless of who or what is causing the problems.

I'm sure somebody was running around Rome saying we shouldnb't be drinking out of the lead pipes too...to bad they just shrugged it off and said 'stupid liberal'.

2005-01-27 12:05:52 PM
I like how the article blames his parents inability to raise a family on one income on taxes, yet fails to mention other possibilities like the fact that the average income of a ceo in the 1950s was about ten times the pay of the lowest paid employee. Now, it's over 100 times. Where did that money come from?

2005-01-27 12:05:53 PM
Intrigued by the headline, I actually RTFA.

What a bunch of nonsense. The decline in western population is caused by social welfare programs making it too expensive to do so. Oh, and by the way, those dirty Muslims are going infiltrate Europe and destroy our noble democratic ideals.

Pssh. If I wanted reactionary conservative blather, I'd go let Ann Coulter out of her crate in my basement.

2005-01-27 12:06:38 PM
Sure, underpopulation is a problem - in Northern Canada, Siberia, Mongolia, the Sahara . . . wait. I did RTFA, and I still don't get why the economists are worried about a decline in birthrates.

In the 70s everyone was screaming about an impending ice age so forgive me if I don't rely on climatologists.

This has been debunked so many times it's sad. This whole "imminent" ice age thing was a product of the popular press and was never embraced by the vast majority of climatologists.

"besides we've only been tracking weather scientifically for 100 years its not like we have a good picture of where the climate has been in the past anyway."

Dendrochronology, artic ice core samples, and scores of other techniques allow us to assess the state of the climate from periods prior to this. Just because someone wasn't standing around marking temperatures with a thermometer doesn't mean that there is no way to recover the data.

maybe we are just going through a normal cycle.

In the real world, climatologists are careful to factor in all of the "forcings" that can effect climate, including orbital preturbations, natural greenhouse emissions, and so forth.

The broad consensus is that anthropogentic (that is, man made) forcings are a significant and recent factor and that natural variations in climate can not account for the steep and recent changes to the global mean.

Look, if you want the straight dope, check out Real Climate at http://www.realclimate.org/

"RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science."

It's abortion!

We have the RIGHT TO OVERPOPULATE this Earth!!

2005-01-27 12:09:11 PM
overpopulation + negative population growth != underpopulation

overpopulation + negative population growth = fixing the problem

2005-01-27 12:09:12 PM
Reading between the lines of the article, it's not underbreeding that's the author's problem, it's that the liberal immigration laws of certain European countries (looks meaningfully at France) will allow the Muslim population to move out and spred from the Middle East. And since, in the authors opinion, the vast majority of Muslims are hateful people who want democracy dead, since it is listening to the word of man rather than the word of Allah, Eurpoe will suffer the twin tragedies of a) not being able to balance out the Evil United States, and b) turning Muslim.

Gosh, with thinking like that running around, you have to wonder how long it will be before there is another Holocaust. Only this time it will be aimed at the Muslims.

2005-01-27 12:09:30 PM
It doesn't matter if it is humanity doing it or not. The avergae temperature of the earth IS rising. Just ask the polar bears.

If true (and we really don't have enough data to say one way or the other) then there is *nothing* can do that will affect the process. Cutting back on emmissions is pointless - it won't make a lick of difference.

2005-01-27 12:10:16 PM
What, you mean in times past there were even MORE screaming children at movie theaters, grocery stores, etc.?

Glad I didn't live then.

2005-01-27 12:10:31 PM
There is a consensus that whenever a society starts getting wealthier (ie: 2nd world, etc) population growth drops. Why?

Well, the short of it is this: when you're poor, your kids are a way to make income. When you're richer, your kids are a drain on your income.

This is true across the board, until you get to the rich. When you're not income constrained, you have lots of kids, possibly by more than one woman.

You can see this in the third world pretty well. The poor always seem to have lots of kids, the rich do too, while the people stuck in the middle get by with one or two (if any).

Malthus just puts forth one scenario. There are many other possible scenarios.

For US population estimates:

Maybe the author's family shouldn't have shat out so many children and they could have had a smaller family that didn't starve. Idiots. Even animals know not to have more offspring when resources are scarce.
