Well said, hubiestubert. Unfortunately, it'll be lost on most of the crowd at fark.

i'm not worried about north korea.

if they try anything china is more than prepared to smack them down, they've got plenty of troops sitting on the border. also, i've heard we have a nuke equipped bomber squadron in south korea.

meh.

I can see the one or two, but how do they jump to 'possibly more than eight'? Seems kind of a random call, doesn't it?

Speculation: the buried neutrino detectors we use to estimate how much radioactive material NK posesses has an error threshhold in this range, or potentially it's just safe speculation about shielding on the material?

Yeah, the whole talk of "We found WMDs! Liberals didn't count those!" is pretty much bogus considering that what we found were ancient shells probably looted by terrorists from a scrapyard without even knowing what they were, containing traces of chemicals at least six years out of usefulness.

Hey, look. Hussein disposed of his weapons the way we wanted him to, someone stole the parts and put them on the side of the road to attack a hummer. Wow, Hussein had WMD's!

The administration gave up looking for WMD's. They've said there weren't any. Give it up. They lied to us about WMD's, and you neoclones swallowed it raw.

Great..
China wants to "own" our economy and damn near does (look
how much crap you own was made there) and they are trying
to buy up US companies.
N. Korea gets crazier every week.
Russia has nukes lost all over the countryside like a kid who won't clean there room.
Oh! But were having elections in Iraq - whee!
And don't forget kiddies our joint war with Israel against
Iran is coming next.
I am SO PROUD of our Administration - GOOD JOB!
Excuse me - I have to see if any of the houses in our 1950's era neighborhood still have bomb shelters in the back yards.....

Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no

ZAZ [TotalFark]

I remember the hostage crisis. Since the revolution Iran has been a major supporter of terrorism.

And pray tell the class what the Iranians were revolting against? Extra points for explaining "Savak" correctly.

I just want to hear him back up his unsubstantiated claims that the Iraq invasion is some kind of keystone in dealing with Iran, Syria, and NK.

Not like I'm holding my breath, or anything.

Hee hee! Thanks for proving you're as much of a selective reader as people think you are, dear. I didn't say anything to agree with any of those people you mentioned. In fact, can't say I posted anything that agreed with anyone, short of the other guy's Miss Cleo post.

Unlike you, apparently, I don't come here looking for brains. It's a bitter disappointment, I know, but please try and get used to it.

But you get a pat on the head for playing the 'let me be so cool as to try and rabidly insult everyone I can!' game. Eventually, I'm sure you'll win something besides mockery, keep on truckin'. I have faith.

Can I just repeat what a few persons have stated earlier, for the sake of being that person who, because they have a different screen name and have a similar point of view as somebody else, must either be mouthpiece or didn't RTFT.

If North Korea actually spent money to purchase this, I really hope they paid in cash. Cause I guarantee that check is gonna bounce. Have any of you seen the documentary they run on HBO sometimes about the North?

Empty streets, big hotels with all the rooms bugged, children marching with sticks instead of guns every day. It's like a giant freedom sucking vortex. The people who live there are brainwashed with staterun TV and radio. They have no 'blogs', no 'drudge', not even Al Gore.

I'm sure that when a Democratic Iraq arises this weekend, North Korea will see how great it is and immediately renounce nukes, reform it's policies on South Korea and become a beacon of Freedom and justice for all to see.

Or, Kim will cut everyones daily ration of grass and leaves so he can afford to buy the rocket launcher he needs to hurl his new nuke

must be tough to be Kim

slantsix--I want no kudos.

I want an Administration that actually tried to look down the road beyond their own wallats, and the wallats of their friends.

This Administration does seem to have a plan, and it's one that leads us down a very dark road, and one that will wind up biting us in the fanny a lot worse than the blowback we've experienced from our policies in the Middle East thus far.

I'm curious though, when Europe is going to come under suspicion. The plan looks to be a feeding frenzy for US based corporations in the Middle East. If North Korea gets added to the plate, that means a conflict that will drain Chinese resources--and to be honest, I wouldn't rule out a plan that involves letting NK bomb the crap out of something, to "prove" the Adminstration's point, and bring a nasty pall over China, Korea, and Japan (who is still in their own economic doldroms of their own making) which would then leave only the former Russian Republics, deep into hock to Western banks, and Europe as economic contenders to US saturation.

If that occurs, it won't be pretty. And having any kind of knowledge of history seems to be lost on the Administration. This sort of naked power play is what gets people shot. A lot of people in the end, and not always the folks who oppose your will...

Most other presidents were terrible. Nobody really stuck to their ideals, nobody really had any morals.

If by "ideals" you mean half-baked made up lies, and if by "morals" you mean coke/drinking problems and a 4th grade vocabulary, then I agree.

Ah, that helps explain, thanks very much. :) I was really boggled by what looked like a completely random 'psychic' leap -- you know, how psychics say "you're going to meet someone new...or run into an old friend!" to cover their bases.

Cheers!

Sure, NK may have nukes, but how are they set for mineshafts?

2005-01-27 11:39:56 AM
The key is winning the culture war with the North Korean on the street. These people just don't know any better.

People biatch and moan about commercialism, but give the NKs some processed food, blue jeans and rock and roll CDs, and they'll give the commies in charge the boot. Worked in the USSR.

Iraq was NOT a threat to the US, but NK is and a real one at that. If this article does contain any shred of truth, though using the term "US Intelligence" is an oxy moron at best, then GWB should be engaging in talks with them and doing his damn best to diffuse the situation. I don't feel enough is being done and there is nothing that will change my mind.

The admin screwed up by lumping these countries into the go lucky happy phrase of the century; "Axis of Evil". Effectively all this administration has done is created a group of fairly strong enemies into one big happy team that would easily hand us our ass on a platter.

Think about this; if we decided to engage Iran and attack their nuclear facilities, or even had the Israelis do it, what do you think NK will do? Sit back and watch? Doubtful. Preemptive strike against the US Western coast obliterating all the silicone. The US could not financially afford to go into war with Iraq, Syria, Iran, NK ... and China.

People people people....you are going about this whole invasion thing all wrong. Don't invade the country with nuclear weapons. Take out the nuclear weapons.

Step one: Paratroop in navy seals (watch navy seals starring Sheen)

Step two: find nukes

Step three: point a laser at the nukes (see Clear and Present Danger)

Step four: watch navy f-18 drop one laser guided bomb on nukes (again the Clear and Present Danger)

Step five: Navy seals dune-buggy back to South Korea (they are friendly right?)

Final step: President lands on carrier in chaps and spurs and declares "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!"

Think North Korea will keep shelling out...not dollars...what do they use? Wons? Yen?, anyways lots of clams for stuff we keep blowing up?

Holy shiat, man. I like to think of myself as reasonable informed and rational on things (despite my regular knee-jerk posting style) but you take the cake. When I grow up, I wanna be as logical and well-worded as you.

You make the independent thinkers of Maine look good, and for that you get all the kudos you can get. And you'll -take- 'em, cause we can't do shiat about the administration's problems for another few years. Bah.

2005-01-27 11:42:12 AM
Is anybody else frightened by Condoleeza Rice getting Colin Powell's job at the same time this breaks?

Also, does anybody know which US administration broke the agreement w/ N.K. mentioned in the article? We were supposed to help them build some power reactors that couldn't be used for weapons materials ( ?slow? as opposed to breeder type, if I remember right - little to no Pu production), and for some reason we blew them off. Then got all upset when they felt they were no longer bound by said agreement.

The more I learn about politics the more disgusted I feel w/ humanity's behavior as a whole. I vote we start a "People w/ an IQ greater than that of their shoes and the tendency to occasionally use it" political party. Too bad they'd never win an election due to their being vastly outnumbered by morans.

Racing for power, and all come in last

Maybe soon the children will be born open-fisted
We all live on one planet it will all go up in smoke

Yeahhhh.... Because the government keeps you up to date on exactly what size their nukes are and they always make public record whatever they are working on in their top secret nuclear facilities.

Here's another piece of the "information age" puzzle: Sometimes information is hidden and secret.

From About.com

An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.

2005-01-27 11:45:03 AM
and yet North Korea has a hard time feeding their people...
and what are the North Koreans gonna do when they find out that all the money used to buy bombs could've fed lots of people.....nothing. They are too tired, weak, and oppressed to do anything.....

The North Korean govt is pathetic in every way.....
if we weren't committed to Iraq, I'd say let's go liberate those poor people and give them all the money and food that they want....They have such an ass-backwards country..
it's unreal....

Answer the question, Mike_71 how does current Iraq

2005-01-27 11:47:40 AM
Where does the US buy its bombs from?
If other countries used the same source, would that help them avoid the label of "terrorist"?

2005-01-27 11:47:52 AM
Ok for the record, please state your politcal affiliation and answers to the following questions...

1) Is Iraq a threat to US safety?
2) Is North Korea a threat to US safety?
3) Should we be worried about terrorism?
4) Is pre-emptivly attacking North Korea a good/fair plan?
5) If attacking NK isn't a good idea, why does it matter that our troops are tied up in Iraq?
6) If the Iraq war was over WMD and protecting America, why doesn't this apply to Pakistan/N. Korea/France?

(A logical person knows both "sides" are wrong and do not use logic.)

2005-01-27 11:48:14 AM

Civil_War2_Time

Good picture. The soviets had some well designed bombs. That 15-megaton U.S. bomb your were talking about is the Mk 17/24.

The thing about this NK nuke that no one has discussed is their infrastructure for supporting a nuclear weapon. What do they have? Maintaining a decent, workable nuclear weapon takes a fair amount of maintenance and that is *only* if it is constructed and designed well. If there are no adequate support facilities (as their have been none in the former soviet states) these weapons will be very low yield if they work at all.

Sure, even a low yield weapon is dangerous but it is not a city-destroying bomb.

In addition, a few of well placed mk-82's (500lb conventional bombs) would probably end their nuclear capability entirely.
