Also involved was a Union Pacific freight car, which ended up on its side. But how it figured in the accident was not immediately determined.

What? They don't know why it was there?
I don't get it.

Ummm...plenty of folks get up that early. I am at work at 6:15 for my workday.

Many of those folks work 2 hours from where they live (east into the country) and they have to leave that early.

Maybe when you get out of college you'll realize that 9am isn't early and 3am is, in fact, late.

@ markbacker:

Guess that's the perk of living in a small country like The Netherlands. Traveling +one hour to your work is almost impossible.

And at the advertising agency where I work, it's normal to start 9:00. Actually, if you come too early (<8:30) the building isn't even opened, so you have to wait outside.

Chunny The Metrolink trains in LA use the very same type of rolling stock and locomotives used by GO Transit.

As for people commuting to work, traffic on the LA highways start to back up even at 5:30 am, so a lot of people take the train. I think the first Metrolink train runs somewhere around 3:30 in the morning, pretty convenient, don't have to be handcuffed to your car!

The GO train is great. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't go from Toronto to Hamilton. It stops in Burlington and I have a catch a bus from there to McMaster University.

Pretty much all of the commuter trains in Southern California are Diesel Electric. The only tracks around here that are electrified are the MTA lines (Blue/Gold/Red/Green lines).

I'm not sure about the Canadian ones.

The scary part is that a number of the Metrolink cars were either purchased or leased from Ontario. It was weird seeing the green "GO" logoed trains parked in Metrolink's yard off of I-5.

What is it with Metrolink? They just can't seem to keep the trains on the tracks..

If it's an SUV, it must have either been loaded with lead plates, or just happened to catch under a wheel. I've been on Metrolink when we hit a pickup truck. It was a slight jolt and we didn't even slow down until the engineer put on the brakes.

(and then sitting on the train for 3 hours because they don't release any 'witnesses' until the accident site is cleared.)

I can't believe people are whining about traffic. That's gotta be the most selfish thing I've ever read.

2005-01-26 01:10:19 PM
Ugh, what a mess. I ride that line to work, but not at that time. I get off the train in Glendale, so if I had been on that particular train, I would have gotten off at the station just a few hundred feet south of the accident.

Commutes are all screwed up around that area: the 5 is a mess, and no trains are running up that way. I had to take a bus from LA Union to Glendale this morning, and I have no idea yet how I'm going to get from Glendale to LA this evening.

From what the news channels are saying, the guy parked his car on the tracks in order to commit suicide, but chickened out at the last minute. If you're going to kill yourself, at least have the decency to do it in a manner that has the least amount of impact on others. Asshat.

I also heard that they can't even find the car that was on the tracks, since it was basically obliterated by the impact. All they've found so far is a license plate.

This one hits pretty close to home. Seeing the train cars that I ride in every day all twisted up like that is a little freaky. My condolences go out to the people involved in the accident, and to their families as well.

I meant no disrespect to the victims by stating that traffic is screwed up. Things like this affect a lot of people in many ways, unfortunately.

RedHed: Some of the debris ended up in a Costco parking lot. The accident occurred near the mall where Best Buy is, if you're familiar with the area.

Latest report: Police are saying that the Jeep driver got out of his vehicle, then stood by and watched the trains collide. Nice.

This idiot not only killed 9 people and injured hundreds, he also screwed up traffic. Took me 80 minutes to get from Sherman Oaks to Hollywood this morning (about 14 miles). Thanks a lot, jerk.

Nice priorities. Any of those dead or injured would have loved to have had the option of sitting in traffic... alive. But you're right, this is all about you and your commute.

I ride the Metrolink daily (on a different line) and I can think of at least three times in the last couple of years that someone has decided to commit suicide on the tracks.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why you want to involve others in your death. Even if we aren't talking about something as horrifying as what happened today, I always think of the poor conductor who has to witness himself at the helm running over someone's body, and I wonder what that does to a person's psyche.

What kind of an asshole do you have to be to want to do that to other people on your way out? Just exit quietly, if you must, and leave the rest of us out of it.

2005-01-26 01:19:08 PM
Sorry, I meant engineer, not conductor. This is Fark, after all, so someone would have called me on it eventually. :)

Yup, it's the Los Feliz Costco, not the Burbank one.

Oh, and 10 dead now. Homicide investigation underway.

RedHed: I work very close to the accident site, so yes, it does affect me. Again, I meant no disrespect to the victims.

NBC is saying 10 dead now, and is being handles as a homicide.

News reports are saying that the Jeep driver parked on the tracks intending to commit suicide, then chickened out at the last minute and got out of his vehicle. Police are questioning him right now.

This idiot not only killed 9 people and injured hundreds, he also screwed up traffic. Took me 80 minutes to get from Sherman Oaks to Hollywood this morning (about 14 miles). Thanks a lot, jerk.

On the surface, this seems a little unfeeling. However, I am in complete agreement with you. I think suicides (the people who commit same, not the act itself) are the biggest dicks. You can't hack your life, so you decide to kill yourself. Fine. That's your right (or not, depending on the jurisdiction). If you plan to commit suicide, do it away from everyone else. These assholes that get in fights with their girl/boyfriends and decide to be all poetic and jump off the Brooklyn Bridge are lame. They end up tying up traffic for hours, since they never jump in the middle of the night. Rush hour or nothing. I used to commute on the LIRR, and these dicks that walk in front of trains decide to do it on the Ronkonkoma or Hicksville branches at 7:00 in the morning. farks up commuting for EVERYONE. If you can't hack it, drive out to the desert somewhere and blow your head off. Just do it away from everyone else who CAN hack their lives, and are trying to contribute something to society.

Can't people like this guy just overdose on sleeping pills or something? It's painless. You just pass the fark out, then don't wake up. I don't see why people have to risk the lives of others for their own selfish wants.

That said: If I was going to commit suicide (not likely, I'm too much of an arrogant ass to do that!) I'd strap myself with just enough explosives to blow myself completely apart. Jump off a highrise, detonate in midair, and shower the people below.

That's a nice way to traumatize a LOT of people without killing anyone.

I remember driving on the 91 freeway, when some asshat decided to commit suicide by jumping off an overpass onto the 91. In front of an 18-wheeler. Which was three cars in front of me, and one lane to the right. Semi does a nice jack knife, hits one of the cars in front of me. I got rear-ended. Oh, and the asshat got run over anyways.

all the streets in glendale were just packed, even ones near me and i am not near the crash, and there also was a crash on the 2 freeway so basically everything around glendale was farked..........this is just tragic...that asshat driver is one of the biggest wastes of space and air on this planet....

My dad rides Metrolink, but on the Orange County line.

This is awful. As for the suicidal asshat who wanted to get his car crash, I'm sure he just thought the train would hit his car, and under most circumstances it would just cause a small dent on the train. However, this was an unfortunate situation where another train was moving in the opposite direction around the same time and a freight train was parked nearby...

Knowing how insensitive NYers are, I'm sure some NY radio station is making fun of this right now ("People ride mass transit in LA?")

as much as I would like to get po'd at the timing of this statement, considering im a LA farker...you are so right...the mass transit system is so screwed up here... but I did ride the bus, back when they were RTD for about 5 years... they were always packed. A few years ago on the CT Turnpike in Darien, some suicidal coont jumped off an overpass and got run over by 2 18-wheelers in a row. Needless to say, she was almond paste almost instantly. Unfortunately, both truck drivers had a moment of "WTF was that?", but kept driving. The police estimated that 4 hours worth of traffic ran over this puddle of sludge that was once a woman before anyone realized it was a person. They found one of her fingers, and used that to identify her. It took me about 3 hours to get to work that day (40 minutes on a typical non-almond paste-type day)

"This whole incident was started by a deranged individual who was suicidal," said Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams.

Interrogator: "Why'd you do it?"

Suspect: "I dunno, I was plum loco"

Interrrogator: "Oh, a loco motive" *sound of train whistle*

I wonder if this type of thing could be avoided if these trains would be pulled by the engine all the time instead of half the time. I for one don't like the idea of riding in one of those cars being pushed down the track by a massive engine.

/wtf?

From what I've learned, just about any railway engineer with over 1 year of experience has been involved in a death. The vast majority of these are due to circumstances far beyond their control, almost always other people on the tracks or otherwise getting into places they're not supposed to be. I've been told it has one of the highest rates of contact with death that doesn't include direct contact with crime, the heath services, or the military.

LA Needs better freeways, lol.
First off, the RTD sucked, but it was just a bus system, now the Metro is a ful-fledged transit system. Accidents happen all the time, in NYC, in London, etc. You think freeways are accident-free? LOL right...We can build more freewas, but where are people gonna live? We're already in a housing crunch right now, more people want to live in the city rather than the suburbs (because your 3-hour commute means less time for family, recreation, Fark, etc). And speaking of recreation we need more paks here. I live in Hollywood and people in this part of town have LESS park/recreation space than South Central!

Building more freeways as a solution to solving traffic is like solving a cocaine addiction by giving the addict more straws.

I know I'm a bit late on the draw here. But, this is pretty tragic. I work for a company that this affects. We are the largest transportation company who works for railroads in the country. We here (Kansas City) dispatch vans all across the country, to pick up people who work on the railroads. When an engineer or conductor is working, they can only work a certain amount of time, then they have to be off, according to the DOT. Often, this isn't neccesarily convenient. So our vans go pick these guys up, and put new guys on the train. When things like this happen we sometimes have to help out. Like when there was all the rain down south, when tracks were flooded, we took passengers off the AmTrak trains, and to the station. And in CA we often take care of political officials, because we are the safest transportation company in the country, so we will move governers, etc around. In cases like these, sometimes we have to help out. We all do the best we can, I send out my prayers to the families.

2005-01-26 03:11:55 PM
Chuckie, great sentiment on your part, and that's very interesting about what your company does.

In this case, I'm not sure it applies, though. Metrolink conductors and engineers are contracted from Amtrak (although that's going to change in the summer, I understand), but their hours are pretty well set. I believe they work an eight hour split-shift. I'm not sure anyone working the rails for Metrolink comes near the time limit that applies in the situation where your company comes in.

I'm reminded, though, of a story from a few months back where an engineer parked a train in the middle of a busy intersection and walked off to go eat because he had come up on his limit for working hours. Boy did that cause some headaches...

I live down the block from where this happens... it's swarming with helicopters as we speak...

as for the person who suggested "I know that area; there are several flood channels in thast area that empty into the L.A. River channel. The guy could have just have driven off a bridge into the channels, making sure he his seat belts were on to make it harder to get out if his car survived the fall."

funny you should mention that, some guy just hung himself next door to us at the river channel.. in fact, there was a goat head severed next to him so they thought at first it was murder.. but no, just suicice.

He could have moved the damn truck... he probably just wanted to see the big BOOM.. and thought no one would be hurt. :(

Metrolink is also at fault big time -- Train was being pushed. With the engine in the back still pushing the lighter cars upfront the train derails. If the engine was in front -- the train just pushes the SUV down the tracks. They pull/push so they don't have to turn around. Metrolink is going to PAY for that stupid idea.

From the story...
It was the nation's deadliest train accident in nearly six years.

Authorities said Juan Manuel Alvarez, 25, of Compton, parked his sport utility vehicle on the tracks and got out before a Metrolink train smashed into it. The train then derailed and collided with another train going in the opposite direction. That train also jumped the tracks.

Alvarez was arrested and will face homicide charges, Police Chief Randy Adams said.

"I think his intent at that time was to take his own life but changed his mind prior to the train actually striking this vehicle."

Alvarez's sister-in-law, Maricela Amaya, said that he had separated from his wife, Carmelita, three months ago. She said the wife got a court order to keep him away, but he had tried to see his wife and son.

"He was having problems with drugs and all that and was violent and because of that he separated from her," Amaya said. "A few other times he went around as if he wanted to kill himself. I said if you're going to kill yourself, go kill yourself far away. Don't come by here telling that to my sister."

She said he had also threatened suicide in front of his son.

The crash occurred at about 6 a.m. in an industrial area of Glendale, a suburb north of Los Angeles. One train was headed for Los Angeles' Union Station from Moorpark, a western suburb. The other train was outbound from Union Station to the San Fernando Valley.

About a dozen employees from the Costco ended up playing an important part in the rescue after hearing the thunderous collision.

Costco employee Jenny Doll said trapped passengers -- some severely injured -- screamed for help as flames raced toward the front of the train car and smoke and diesel fumes filled the air. Forklift operators, truck drivers and stock clerks worked side-by-side to pull victims out, using store carts to wheel some of the most severely injured to safety.

"There were people stuck in the front. Everything was mangled," Doll said. "You could not even tell that it was a train cab at all."
