Anyone remember me?

Mr. Clarence Butterworth

What's your theory on the poor showing of Mel's Jesus flick in the Academy choices?

Because the movie is about Jesus. Plain and simple.

I'll admit, if you can say you won an Oscar for something you acted in, you pretty much rise above everybody else in the room.

But...GREAT actors and actresses win Oscars for "brilliant" performances, and in the minds of the members of the Academy, the very thought of the existance of a "God" or Jesus....is NOT "brilliant".

To these people, anyone who believes in God is a fool, and any film with God as its subject matter is fool-Ishiathey have no time for "ridiculous" ideas, like the existance of God, therefore they will not pay any attention to, or award any achievements of any film that talks about him.

In their minds, anyone who paid good money to go see the film is a blithering idiot, so why in the world would they want to honor the film?

I wonder if Dick Morris ever sucked on Ann Coulter's toes? That would make a good arthouse film

2005-01-25 11:05:48 AM
You know, for the ABC site for the Oscars, that is one tacky, ugly beast of a page layout...

2005-01-25 11:05:59 AM
I think the academy made the right choice with 1998's Shakespeare in Love.

2005-01-25 11:05:59 AM
I wish Shaun of the Dead had gotten a nomination. That movie was a glorious combination of comedy, drama, and scoial satire. It's time's like these when i think the Oscar's just might be rigged...

And clearly F-911 is in fact, two movies not one. The first part with Moore's voiceover is a story about the Saudis influence in America. The second half is largely unscripted, no voiceover and is a diatribe against war. It's as if Moore was already working on the first movie, didn't have enough interesting material and then spliced the second film, more typically Moore-drive by interviews into it.

As documentaries go Morgan Spurlocks's Supersize Me is a lot better. And if you go back a few years. "The Devil's Playground" has got them both beat.

2005-01-25 11:07:30 AM
For the record:

My favorite films of the 90's.

1990: Goodfellas
1991: The Silence of the Lambs
1992: Singles
1993: Schindler's List
1994: The Shawshank Redemption / Pulp Fiction
1995: Casino / Braveheart
1996: Fargo / Kingpin
1997: Donny Brasco
1998: The Big Lebowski
1999: Fight Club / Office Space

2005-01-25 11:09:03 AM
Well, I hate to cast aspersions, but look at the subject matter of the movies in both cases where a less deserving performance won. Again, the "Spielberg Lesson" looms large.

I don't buy it. If that were true, Hillary Swank wouldn't have won (over the heavy favorite, Bening) for "Boys Don't Cry", which dealt with very controversial subject matter.

2005-01-25 11:10:42 AM

See here...this is where I get snubbed

2005-01-25 11:12:14 AM
Elvis Nixon: As documentaries go Morgan Spurlocks's Supersize Me is a lot better.

It's got glowing reviews, but I thought it was way ovverated. It was just the obvious, It was like a grown-up version of Jackass... It was a stunt.

What a shiat list... Fark all that Hollywood shiat.

LoveInAction

I just heard those two cardboard cut-out beer guys from that TV commercial saying "BRILLIANT!"

That's me, using my left hand to chuck yellow snowballs at the left, and my right hand to chuck 'em at the right.

Mr. Clarence Butterworth

What about the success of films like The Ten Commandments That won a slew of awards.

'Cos DeMille was a good director and Heston was a good actor. Gibson's a mediocre director, and I haven't yet forgiven Caveziel for his participation in the most recent butchery of Alexandre Dumas' masterpiece.

2005-01-25 11:17:14 AM
No Paul Giamatti and no Jim Carrey for Eternal Sunshine. No fair.

2005-01-25 11:18:19 AM
Sideways wasn't that good.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Sideways was kinda funny, but it wasn't anywhere near the best movie I'd seen of 2004. I get the feeling critics only like it is because it revolves around wine. If it wins Picture of the Year they'll have something to discuss at cheese-tasting parties.

2005-01-25 11:20:40 AM
If they didn't feel threatened, and truly believed that God is "fiction", as you say, then they would have no reason to FEAR ITS INFLUENCE, and WOULD nominate it for an Oscar.

They didn't nominated it for Best Picture because it didn't deserve it. It was a 2-hour snuff film. Very little story, virtually no character development and hesitant acting (mostly because of the inane choice to use a dead language). It was nominated for the three things it did excel in - cinematography, make-up and music. They will likely throw it a bone and give it cinematography (even though A Very Long Engagement should win).

It has nothing to do with fright. Hollywood actually likes movies that make money, and this one did. Don't be surprised if you get several other "religious" films in the future, trying to ride wave.

Actually, it was Ben Hur that kicked butt at the Academies. Ten Commandments never won best picture nor best actor. Not sure what it won.

Yeah, I recall the Ten Commandments doing really bad...

Oh, and on-topic, Eternal Sunshine was probably the best movie I watched this year.

2005-01-25 11:21:49 AM
Passion could have been much, much better, like having a director and actors who could act. Maybe a film on the early life and times of Jesus would do better.

Maybe something on those missing 18 years, which is pretty crappy storytelling(Dogma) on the face of it.

2005-01-25 11:21:56 AM
Hey now!! I for one enjoyed The Passion of The Christ - especially that part where Morgan Freeman opens that filing cabinet drawer and it hits Jim Almighty in the gut. LAFF!!

2005-01-25 11:23:17 AM
Why don't they nominate movies real people actually watch instead of pseudo intellectual crap? This is why liberals lose every election, they don't understand middle America!

2005-01-25 11:23:37 AM
oscars are for bored housewives. even the razzies are not interesting. this whole industry makes me sick to my farking stomach. and who gives a flying fark if mel from hell gibson is on the list or not?

2005-01-25 11:23:52 AM
I'm actually really surprised that Phantom wasn't nominated in the category of Costume Design. Make-up too, possibly (on the Phantom).

Also, I'll add that Emmy Rossum was GORGEOUS and her thigh-high lacy stockings were hot. And the Phantom was hot (until the last part).

2005-01-25 11:24:17 AM
I had to pause the DVD when they showed the Demon Baby in Passion. I was laughing so damn hard I could barely breathe.

Will there be a "Passion of the Christ 2" Too bad, they coulda got some franchise legs out of it.

Because movies that "real people" (read: you) watch typically aren't that good.

Let me guess, you're mad because Troy and Alexander got snubbed for best picture.

2005-01-25 11:25:17 AM
Not even close to being worthy of a "NEWS FLASH"!!!!

I've always heard half the Academy members don't even see all these movies oe even fill out there own ballots.

Dumbass Oscars.........

"Ray" was my favorite movie of this last year that I saw. I'm looking forward to seeing Clint's lasted too.

Summary of the thread so far:

- Paul Giammatti wuz robbed.

- Jim Carrey wuz robbed.

- The Aviator is overrated.

- Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.

- Hooray, Michael Moore was shut out.

- He wasn't even eligible.

- Yes, he was.

(rinse and repeat)

They do - didn't you notice our discussion on Titanic's win?

I'm not selling, just reporting the news...

Gayness isn't controversial, otherwise American Beauty wouldn't have won jack...

But back to the original observation... in Brody over Day-Lewis and Bennini over McKellan, we're talking about Holocaust subject matter holding the trump card.

Remember, Spielberg couldn't get arrested at the Oscars until he did Schindler's List, hence "The Spielberg Lesson" became an insider's joke.

"So, what movie do you think will win the Oscar this year?"

"Didn't see any this year... which one was about the Holocaust"?

2005-01-25 11:27:48 AM
Paul Giamatti was great in Sideways? WTF!!!
He should call the police, this is grand larceny.

Carrey, after years of doltish slapstick a la Ace Ventura, will never be nominated for an Oscar.
/Allllllll rightey then
//Love Jim Carrey
///ESotSM was one of my favourite films this year.

2005-01-25 11:27:54 AM
Ray will probably win because movies with dead people and/or retards always win. Farenheit wasn't nominated cuz it sucked. It was FAR from a truthful documentary, and anyone who thinks it's pure uneditied truth needs a severe reality check. EVERYTHING is editing because everything is biased. Example: in Columbine he made it seem like Charlton Heston was Satan. However, those conventions are planned at least a year in advance. How do you change the date/location of something that THOUSANDS of people have already planned for? Editing is a powerful tool...I know, I edit film.

The worship of Celebrity is disgusting. Its worshippers consumer-sheep.

2005-01-25 11:28:47 AM
Roberto Benigani is farking clown shoes. The only reason he cleaned up is because of the subject matter.

2005-01-25 11:29:34 AM
Is Garden State from this year? Because the funniest thing about that movie is that it's coming of age film for 27 year olds. That's pretty retarded, or we are, as a nation to think that it's normal.

"Because the movie is about Jesus. Plain and simple."

Uh no, It's because that movie is a piece of crap

I think The Passion of the Christ should be a trilogy (or would "trinity" be a better word?) Part II can deal with Jesus's short stint in Hell, where he goes on all sorts of swashbuckling adventures to rescue unbaptized children who have been shackled in chains and forced to dig up the lost Sankara Stones. Any ideas for Part III?

2005-01-25 11:37:49 AM
Never mind all this blithering about Jesus and Michael Moore. Let's talk about Emmy Rossum in lacy white silk stockings.

Lost in Translation... My favorite film of last year and probably in my top 30. The most hated film of the "common folk".

Blockbuster even warned people not to rent it. It was the film I would suggest to friends and then they often claim it was the worst movie they had ever seen.

THE PASSOIN OF THE CHRIST III: RESURRECTION

This time, it's Biblical.

HotWingConspiracy: hilarious. you win.

Is it me, or does Emmy Rossum have a Britney Murphey thing going on in that pic?

Mike_71:

Its nothing more than propoganda arranged in an orderly fashion to produce one great big lie that lasts for an hour and a half.

I'm pretty sure the people who don't think its propoganda either

1. Don't know what it is or haven't seen a propoganda flick before (is possible - they are kept off American Television pretty consistently, which IMO is a shame).

2. Never saw it

I mean I can't get past the first 15 minutes of it, and it just shrieks emotionally laden horseshiat from every angle. I will admit the scenes from the fall of the towers was impressive, but quite honestly the French duo that filmed '9/11' did it quite a lot better the first go around.

I thought it deserved a nomination for Nest Picture because it is something new, however. Commercially driven political propoganda during an election year in the form of documentary is quite new. I think this is the first instance of it. All the old agit-prop and the like were goverment sponsored, unless you take in account things like 'the 47 Ronin" which was made for commercial release in Japan.

2005-01-25 11:40:44 AM
Barely anything for ESotSM, and it won't win what it's up for. Nothing for Kill Bill 2. Nothing for The Life Aquatic. I'm officially not interested.

As though Carnivale's snub by the Golden Globes wasn't bad enough....

2005-01-25 11:42:48 AM
Audrey Tautou in A Very Long Engagement was ok, I guess. Dunno, dunno what they were going for. Seemed overdone.
