I'm trying to think, but nothing's coming out...

Death by sword. How ceremonious.
2005-01-23 02:04:33 PM
I wonder if it was a Hattori Hanzo sword?

///"It only takes one."

////Also obligatory.

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth!

How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is givn;
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heavn.
No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in.

Where children pure and happy pray to the blessd Child,
Where misery cries out to Thee, Son of the mother mild;
Where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door,
The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

Toshiro Mifune is one of my favorite actors. Even though he played a lot of samurai-type characters, his other roles showed he had an amazing emotional range as well.

[image from too old to be available]

Wikipedia article on him here:

wiki isn't letting me link today
2005-01-23 02:11:43 PM
Good headline. Mad props.
2005-01-23 02:13:42 PM
Man, that's amusing.

Its even more amusing that I myself own several katana's and other swords, none of which are sharp enough to cut butter.
2005-01-23 02:14:15 PM
Mifune is an icon.

Stab wounds? Thats not how you swing a 'samauri type sword'.
2005-01-23 02:14:44 PM
THIS is what happens when you try happy slappin in the USA.
2005-01-23 02:15:16 PM
i was too terrified by the latest fark personal picture to read this article. sorry.
2005-01-23 02:17:05 PM
blablabla.. kill kill kill.. I just wanted to let you Farkers know.. I am no longer a Farker.. Totalfark for me baby!
2005-01-23 02:17:41 PM
There's a great article on Mifune here.

Thanks for the headline complements, wish I hadn't used "man" twice. Neighbor would have been better
2005-01-23 02:20:35 PM

lol! That girl is scary looking. Lika a baby with long hair...
2005-01-23 02:22:29 PM
i love mifune/kurosawa.. i need to get sanjuro though, havent seen it yet. no stores have it argh
2005-01-23 02:25:02 PM
Bethlehem, how surpising. A town too depressing for even Billy Joel to write about.
2005-01-23 02:26:22 PM
Why can't they just say what kind of sword it is? What's with this "Samurai type sword" wtf, did samurai only use one sword ever?
2005-01-23 02:26:42 PM
Nice headline.
2005-01-23 02:31:28 PM
Apologizing in advance for the thread-jack...

Doesn't the girl in today's Fark Personals look sorta like Homsar?
2005-01-23 02:32:20 PM
Senjuro is good though not as good as Yojimbo. Spends most of the movie protecting these whiny ass kids from themselves.
2005-01-23 02:33:23 PM
That biatch is farking weird looking. Somebody kill it.

If you're gonna kill somebody with a sword, make sure that somebody else videotapes it, because there's not enough of that kind of stuff on the internet yet.
2005-01-23 02:33:28 PM
But the big question is...did it have a dragon painted on the blade? It needed a dragon painted right on the blade!
2005-01-23 02:38:14 PM

Now we have to ban Cutlery too!

(there's a movie with mifune where he never touches a sword. He plays a wealthy industrialist trying to start a shoe factory, and his kid gets kidnapped, don't remember the name. It's a Kirusawa one tho).

Why can't they just say what kind of sword it is? What's with this "Samurai type sword" wtf, did samurai only use one sword ever?

No shiat man! I'm pissed as hell at our ignorant American press which won't bother to distinguish between a katana, wakizashi, no-dachi, or ginsu steak knife. Oh the humanity!
2005-01-23 02:39:01 PM
Great reference. I just watched The Hidden Fortress last night. Not Kurosawa's best movie, but still great.

Anybody seen Rashomon? That's Mifune at his battiest. Just loony.

Also, someone above mentioned not being able to find Sanjuro. Try here if all else fails. The Criterion Collection is amazing, but expensive. Here're all the movies they've restored with Mifune.
2005-01-23 02:39:53 PM
If killing someone with a Samurai sword isn't badass, I just don't know what is.
2005-01-23 02:40:24 PM

It was High and Low. Great movie.
2005-01-23 02:40:24 PM
This thread needs more Mifune.

"I'm a samurai, you know. Got a sword and everything."

I'm about to watch it. I got it from Netflix. :D
2005-01-23 02:44:46 PM
what??? no pic of john belushi?!?!?
2005-01-23 02:45:07 PM
It's about time the town of bethlehem makes it into the news.. Oh, wait.
2005-01-23 02:45:56 PM
Stabbing? A katana is labeled as slashing, not piercing damage. The attacker clearly didn't have the appropriate Weapon Proficiency, so he was at -4 to hit, and thus it was the victim's own fault for having lousy AC.
2005-01-23 02:47:43 PM
As an aside - anyone think that captain Mifune in the Matrix Reloaded, Revolutions looks a hell of a lot like Toshiro Mifune? I mean, a whole hell of a lot like him.
[image from too old to be available]
2005-01-23 02:50:10 PM
I feel shamed that I understood all that.

I feel more shamed that I must point out that a katana, as a masterwork bastard sword, is capable of being weilded by any level 1 warrior so long as they hold it in two hands. This guy was obviously trying to be a fancy-shmancy ranger-type.

Rangers got gypped in 3rd Ed.

*Slinks off to hide.*

I think they need a Pennsylvania tag. There is so much quality material that gets posted from our shiatty state
2005-01-23 02:54:38 PM
The coroner says Garcia died of multiple stab wounds from a Samurai-type sword.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you supposed to cut, not stab, with a samurai sword?
2005-01-23 02:58:16 PM
January 23, 2005 Police say a Bethlehem man used a sword to kill another man Friday night in the city's first homicide in more than a year.

Forty-eight-year-old Sonny Thomas was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

I guess nails and wooden cross just aren't the right tools.

/one way ticket please.
2005-01-23 03:01:59 PM
Freak, you sir are correct about that. They were indeed meant to be used as slashing weapons. And it was considered (still is in some parts iirc)an artform.
2005-01-23 03:21:21 PM
Best headline ever.

/Seven Samurai wasn't nearly his best
2005-01-23 03:30:32 PM

Freak, you sir are correct about that. They were indeed meant to be used as slashing weapons. And it was considered (still is in some parts iirc)an artform.

Indeed. Properly sharpened and wielded, even a glancing blow could sever a limb.
2005-01-23 03:42:09 PM
There should be a three day waiting limit before you can purchase swords. And we should ban sword shows before this epidemic gets out of hand. Luckily, TSA has caught on the dangers of tweezers, but government needs to step in. "Bear arms" and "swords" are different. Now, if he were killed with a bear arm, then it would be no big deal.
2005-01-23 03:43:54 PM
I once made pancake width slices out of a large irregularly shaped watermelon. For translation: If you wield it properly, a good sharp (real) katana is basically a lightsaber to all vegetable matter.

What really surprised me was how easily i could swat the dew melons my friend was lobing at me.

/sword is the soul of the samauri
